Having grown up on Sega consoles I would say Sega's abandonment the dreamcast which I think is by far the greatest console ever made, as well as their subsequent decision to exit the console market alltogether is an easy decision when choosing the absolute worst piece of gaming related news I have ever heard.

That being said I have heard lots of bad gaming news but some notably hear wrenching ones include.

The death of Working Designs(Good lord did I cry my eyes out about this.  Wasn't quite suicidal like I was when the Dreamcast died but it hurt...BAD)

Squaresoft's divorce from EA(their best years by far).

Squaresoft's merger with Enix.  As the company has gotten larger the quality of their games have become worse.

The death of 3DFX, the makers of the voodoo graphic's PC accelerators which blew us away back during the years when being a PC gamer actually meant playing games console owners could only dream of rather than the crappy rushed ports we get today that quickly wind up on torrent sites, usually before release.

The cancellation of Earthbound 64 for the N64.  The Game Boy Advanced version not being localized didn't help matters either.

SNK's death.  Even though this was greatly remedied by SNK's rebirth as SNK/Playmore I wish SNK made a true successor to the Neo Geo, the second greatest console of all time behind the Dreamcast.

The death of Gunpei Yoko.  The man is a God and was the mentor of Shigeru Miyamoto who is arguably the greatest living game designer of all time.  I mourned his death despite his flub with the Virtual Boy, nobody's perfect.

Gonna go small scale here. The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf being cancelled/indefinitely on hold is sad. (Not a pc gamer by choice, I only own Morrowind for pc) But I would have liked to play it.

Yeah, that was a blunder by CR Projekt for certain.  Would've made much more money selling it on the Xbox 360 than on the PC.
Hopefully when the 360 version of Witcher 2 outsells the PC version 2 - 1 at least despite many 360 gamers not having had exposure to the prior installment CD_Projekt will join other sensible publishers and developers like Crytek, Epic Games and soon Blizzard in realizing that PC gaming is a relic of the past and that consoles are the future.

When Blizzard announce they were canceling StarCraft: Ghost. I don't let myself get excited about a game in development anymore.

Yeah.  Fortunately since Blizzard is finally warming up to consoles with their strong hints of a Diablo III console port we may eventually see Starcraft Ghost on next generation consoles.

I bet someone said this EXACT same thing 20 years ago.
Ironic some people refuse to see the obvious.

Sega's demise in the hardware market - Damn it, I liked the Dreamcast! Wish it had been given more love. Also included were the unfulfilment of the promises of games like Shenmue.

Duke Nukem Forever canceled - So sad to see that 15 years of wor- Oh wait, it did get released! And judging by the crap that was eventually sold to consumers, I'd say canceling it was good news after all!

Yeah because digital distribution and file sharing was more rampant back then.

And what's wrong with digital distribution?

^This.

When my local arcade closed down about ten years ago.

Most recently when Keiji Inafune left Capcom. Only person that actually cared about making games and not re-releasing the same garbage over and over again.

When Black Isle went belly up. Obsidian and Troika were never able to put a product together the way that Black Isle did.

Closure of Ensemble Studios. Still haven't forgiven Microsoft for this one.

No news on Warcraft 4. Where is the next WC RTS Blizzard?!

No plans for a sequel to Brutal Legend. My hopes of a folk metal faction are ruined!

EA not releasing most of the Sims 3 expansions on consoles. Yeah, I enjoy me some Sims. Bite me. :P

Valkyria Chronicles 2 & 3 are released. On PSP. o.o

This and Sega announcing that they won't publish another Alpha Protocol. There might still be hope for the latter, though.

Earthbound 64 hoping every day it to come true and then when Square merged with Enix that was it for me.

When Battlefront 3 was cancelled, picked back up, and cancelled again. I played hundreds (yes plural) of hours playing Battlefront 2. I had a major sad when 3 was dropped.
