I just got Mass Effect, my first game on my new laptop, and after I hit play in the menu, it doesn't start. I have switchable graphics, Intel HD, which obviously won't run it, is one. When I switch to ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5450, shouldn't that be enough?

The minimum from the HD 5000 series was the HD 5550 (there is a truly huge jump from the very poor quality of the 5450 to the level of the 5550, much greater than the small cost that it would have added to specify it. It's too late now. Modern laptops cannot be "opened back up" after being welded together, to upgrade their graphics.
