Did they fix Mikhael / Chest item upgrading? I never knew about it until today, but I can't seem to get it to work on any item (and I've tried dozens, including generics). I tried googling to see if I could find evidence of them removing it, but all I ever get are threads from late 2009 and early 2010 talking about how to do it. I've tried: selling an item and immediately buying it back; selling an item, exiting the merchant window, reopening it, and then buying it back; selling an item, leaving the zone, coming back, reopening the window, and then buying it back; and every other combination I could think of, and couldn't get a single item to upgrade.
So is it still possible? Am I just doing it wrong if so?

-Sell the item.
-Save your game (I always use a new slot, though I'm not sure if that makes a difference).
-Exit out of the game, and then load the new save (or just hit reload, though that is less reliable).
-The item should now be upgraded, if upgrading is possible. At higher levels, I sometimes find that it takes several save/exit/reopen rounds for a lower tier item to fully upgrade, btw.

Thanks for the information. I'll give it a try, but that's starting to get into the area of not really worth the time. At least for me, I'm sure some min/maxers would heartily disagree.

So are the items supposed to upgrade immediately? Most items in the game seem to improve as you level up, so is that how it is done?

The "save, exit, reload" trick might work for some items.
For others, it takes completing certain quest-lines and leveling up.

Is there a list of items that won't upgrade-I remember the Ancient Elven Armor Set is one of them.

Indeed. I assumed the OP understood that, but probably should have mentioned it just the same, for the sake of completeness and clarity.

You do not need to save. You sell the item, and leave the merchant pop up. Then, you ask the smith again thna ou want to buy, and the item will be upgraded; this can happen inmediatley, you do not even need to leave Soldier's Keep.
BUT, you will need to have gone up to the necessary level for the upgraded item (there should be a list of the levels requered somewere on the wiki).
If you got, say, Maric's sword at level 9 it probably will be a Red Steel sword. If you sell it at around level 16ish and then buy it back, it will now be a Dragonbone sword.
Note than this is not free, though. You will sell it for the usual prize, and buy it for the shameless tefth prize (four or five times of what you sold if for) So make sure you save BEFORE you sell the item, in case you habe not yet gotten up to the level you need.

It's usually generic and dlc items that can be upgraded, not counting the blood dragon armor.
I always use this method to upgrade the Return to Ostagar items. I'll just dump everything in the Warden's Keep chest and come back between levels 15-20 and they should be tier 7 quality.
Most items found in-game, that aren't dlc, don't upgrade. This includes Ancient Elven armor, Juggernaut, etc. The only items that I can think of that do upgrade are all from Warden's Keep, Stone Prisoner and RtO.

Is there a limit to the number of items you can put in the Chest and sell to Mikhail?

No, there isn't.

It usually takes several tries for the items to upgrade when sold to Mikhail. Usually I will bring a bunch of stuff to him, sell them all at once, exit out of his menus, then talk to him again. The first time, maybe one or two items will have upgraded. Repeat until everything is the level you want.
Also, most regular items in the normal game will upgrade. Every Crow dagger I've found and bought can be upgraded to tier 7 with 3 rune slots. The way to tell is, look the item up on the wiki, if the tier is fixed, it will say so, otherwise it will say "Varies (Tier 1-7)".
