I'm sorry if this is a stupid question or in the wrong place. I've tried searching the forums for a similar topic and haven't found any.
What do achievements do? Are they just for bragging rights or do they do something to subsequent play throughs? Someone told me that on xbox you get points for them and the points can be used for stuff. I don't know if that is true since I don't own a xbox but I was wondering if on the PS3 the achievements have any practical value.
Once again sorry if this is a stupid question. Aside from the xbox fanboy no one has ever explained the purpose of achievements and they were just things I picked up as I played (and ignored afterward).

Achievements/trophies are mainly for bragging right's,although there are a few games were achievement's/trophies do unlock stuff for new playthrough's or for stuff on playstation HOME. Some trophies on Resident Evil 5 will unlock figurines, A certain trophy in White Knight Chronicles will unlock the white knight outfit for your PS HOME avatar and Mass Effect Trophies and achievements unlock extra powers or weapon training for new playthrough's.
