Scientists and engineers prefer metric over imperial simply due to their numeral systems: Decimal rather than the duodecimal. The SI system itself is as arbitrary as the Imperial system. The inaccurately measured dimension of the Earth is no more significant that the length of an English person's foot or arm.

As for day-to-day use, I can say that both SI (metric) and Imperial are equally practical, as I have become accustomed to both over the years.
However, I reserve a major hatred of the Fahrenheit system, and strongly supports Celcius. The triple point of water is a most important cosmological constant for the emergence of life itself. The approximate weather in Denmark isn't.
