That pic might replace my TIM wallpaper.
Nothing could replace a TIM wallpaper for me..... well, besides another TIM wallpaper.

"Humanity first" is a great motto. Not to mention that it gives Shepard some focus and motivation, instead of just going with the flow, doing what he's told to, fighting back those who attack him, and never questioning the antagonist's motivations. Shepard needs to be more proactive than reactive. Or he needs to be able to roleplay as such. Having a clear motivation helps.
"The Earth" is a very tangible concept, and that's what we're fighting for at the end. Even though, here too, the hero is merely reacting to the antagonist's actions, instead of having an ambition on his own. Unfortunately the devs neglected building Shepard's connection to humanity and the Earth. The emotional engagement of the story and the stakes are going to suffer because of it.
My Shepard doesn't have a particular connection to Earth any more than I do to Africa for being the continent that humans evolved on. It's something to be acknowledged, but it's not personal. She has plenty of more personal motivation from other corners in any case.laecraft wrote...

Indeed. It may matter more for Earthborn Shepards (though their lives sucked, so it may not).BlueMagitek wrote...
I'm taking that your Colonist is not an Earthborn, then?

There is a subtle difference there. Africa was chosen by accident. Humanity could have evolved in India or in South America. The environments are not that different.Xilizhra wrote...

Earth is very unique. Humans could not possibly have evolved on Mars or Venus.

The fact that I acknowledge my mother's primary part in my being alive doesn't mean that I'm obligated to be loyal to her or have any particular regard for her. What if she happened to be abusive (and if we ignore the anthropomorphization going on here, Earth was definitely not kind)? I mean, mine isn't, but declaring that one must be unconditionally loyal to something/one simply because of circumstance is foolish.iOnlySignIn wrote...

Earth is very unique. Humans could not possibly have evolved on Mars or Venus. It was not until quite recently did scientists discover a planet with similar temperature to Earth (at some 600 ly away). Let alone an atmosphere capable of sustaining Greenhouse Effect, a magnetic field to deflect harmful cosmic radiation, and liquid water, among other things.
Forgive me for saying, but to disregard Earth without knowing how important and unique it is is like disregarding your own mother (assuming you're not an orphan) without knowing the difficulty of giving birth to and raising a child.

It's actually extraordinarily "kind", by any definition of the word. Humanity seems more like spoiled brat who's wasting the family fortune (e.g. by diggin up his elder siblings' rotten corpses and burning them for money) than an unfortunate child of an abusive parent.Xilizhra wrote...

The hellish aspects are certainly largely self-inflicted. But that wasn't quite my point, which is that Earth being endangered isn't necessarily any more of a motivation than the galaxy as a whole being endangered.iOnlySignIn wrote...

But again, it may just be a difference in world view. While this might seem like hell to you, it's mostly the Garden of Eden for me.

I'm afraid that's not possible.

Thuggish nigh-slave owner who mistakes flamboyance for style? I'm not sure if it fits exactly, but there's potential there.feliciano2040 wrote...
