We've all experienced painful games before - not necessarily difficult, but a game that manages to press your buttons - Eventually to the point where the game isn't even finishable and must be banished to some unholy pit of despair(or something like that). This thread is here for you to list your horror stories of games that drove you above and beyond insanity, and had to either perform an E.T. on it, or otherwise try to repress the terrible memories.

My personal choice? Spore - specifically, the space stage. There were so many things I genuinely enjoyed about this game - not necessarily the gameplay as much as the fleshed out concept, structure of it, and the easy-breezy level editor was quite nice, and I like where they went with it. Then came the space stage. Like the stages before, the structure and editor were great, but the gameplay itself turned into a collosal nightmare.

Instead of being able to colonize other planets, connect with other alien species, or doing anything remotely interesting, much of the game ended up dealing with fighting off alien empires that simply won't(or can't) die at all, meaning going 5 minutes outside of your system just isn't going to happen. To their credit, it starts off with colonization and negotiations with other species, but eventually devolved(ha!...) into boring gameplay that went nowhere.

To this day, I still haven't completed spore - it's still about halfway done with the space stage, but I'm trying other avenues of gaming before going back to that horrible, horrible place.

I found the cell stage of Spore to be the best part of that game, which is kinda depressing...

Alone in the Dark (2008 release) The controls were ****** poor, in first person view you have to make your PC blink every so often or he can't see, camera angle is ****ty. I gave up on the first level trying to dodge lan electric arc while repeling. Also some racer Series on the 64 that went so insanely fast I never won but a handful of the races.

The First Templar - From the first level alone, I knew this wasn't going to be like Assassin's Creed. It's pedestrian gameplay at it's most boring, and the graphics seem a generation behind.

Ninja Gaiden 2 - The first Gaiden was a tough yet enjoyable game that rewarded perseverance. The second is cheap and frustrating and seems designed to tear your hair out.

Conan - It wants to be God of War, but it's lame combat and uninspired design make it nothing more than second rate clone. This game is not what is best in life.

Alpha Protocol - I was a point near the end, but this one mission has me trying to take out a number of soldiers assaulting our position. Dying the umpteenth time I just had to say "F**K IT!". I have better games to play than this.

A couple of recent(ish) examples for me are Mirror's Edge: which isn't to say it was a bad game, and it had the potential to be a lot of fun.  Unfortunately for me that potential was never realised as my clumsy fingers couldn't really get along with its somewhat complex controls and careful timing, neither of which I'm especially good at.  Shame, really.

The other was The Last Remnant: I think largely because it was a bit of a culture shock for me, being my first look at JRPGs.  Again, I'm not going to say it was bad, but I really couldn't get into it at all and ultimately just found it rather annoying.

I finished "E.T." on the Atari 2600 multiple times back in the day. Wish I could say it was fun. :P

My vote goes to "Jade Cocoon 2" for being an overall dull and repetitive game that dragged on far longer than it needed to. I quit playing after a plot twist deep into the game that sapped my will to continue. Never before had I played such a tedious grindfest.

I also have memories of forcing myself to complete things I really wasn't enjoyable.  We do some strange things when we're young.

Lost Odyssey. I tried to like it so much, and I forced myself to play it, but the game was so "Meh" in every way possible, except for some minor story parts about the actual immortality of the main character.

Also, Fallout Tactics. That game was just plain silly. I put two hours in it, but it was terrible.

Most MMO's I've tried. They focus too much on "Kill this monster, level, get better gear, now kill this monster, rinse, repeat.

Sniper Ghost Warrior. At first I was excited for some real sniper gameplay, but when they tell you in the first mission to run after the target, who is fleeing with a car, through an enemy camp, and you have a pistol, I thought "**** no".

NBA 2K9. My whole team played it, and I thought of trying since I got tired of hearing stuff I didn't understand, so I tried it. Most horrible port ever.

The Witcher

I bought the enhanced edition for $20 about a year ago. Since so many people speak so fondly of it, including game reviewers, I decided to give this a game a shot.

I was up to chapter 2 or 3, and I was up to the part where your in that town trying to solve a murder ( I think it was a murder ...  I can't remember) . The only thing I can remember in this game plot-wise is when you save that witch from the village.

I later on decided to quit playing the game because I found it so frustrating, reasons being :

- Quest logs are not clear enough. I was running around in circles and couldn't make any major progress in the game.

- Combat is boring (click, 1, 2, 3, click). I gave the game another go on the hardest difficulty but I still found combat boring.

- Everybody looks the same, add to this the fact that I was running around in circles and it felt like a nightmare. There's that fat rich dude, that old hobo, and that other hobo that says "Your mum sucks... ( you know the rest, lol). Even some of the main characters have these common faces.
 
I know many people love this game and I am sorry for bashing it but this game is just too boring for me. I still have the game at the bottom of my drawer, but I am not willing to go through all that frustration and anger again. The frustration mainly being at the unclear quest logs preventing me from making progress in the game because I've heard that the story is very good, and I am the type that doesn't mind bad gameplay for a good story.

The Witcher is the only game that I've put down, I played for more than 15 hours and did not feel immersed in the world, it failed to draw me in. DA:O only took about 5 hours to draw me into Ferelden (After Ostagar), and as soon as I was drawn in, I played every day till my head literaly dropped on the keyboard. Kotor took about 10-15 hours to draw me in (After Taris), and I sure played that game non-stop back in the days. :D

Can anyone tell me why I should give The Witcher  another go? When does the game/story get interesting, and at which chapter ?

I feel left out. :blush:

^ Don't feel left out. If you didn't like it by that point - you probably won't ever.

Personally, I have no problem whatsoever with repeated use of NPC faces and lines of random dialogue - you'll find that most Bioware games ever made also do this (including KOTOR). I believe they made the faces a lot more unique however with the enhanced edition.

At any rate, I think that The Witcher appeals to different people for different reasons. A few that I can think of off the top of my head include:

* Grey decisions most of the time, actual in-game consequences, consequences are not made clear. In other words, the game does not usually put you in the typical Bioware extreme black and white choice position of "Give the hobo 100,000 gold and let his family have your house" versus "Kill the hobo by cutting off his fingers one by one then letting him bleed to death, then steal all of his belongings and burn his corpse". When you make a decision in TW, it's consequences are not always presented to you on a silver platter, so you have to make the decision as you would in real life, weigh up the possible benefits and consequences, then decide.

* Grey characters. Virtually every single major character in the game has their own set of motives and goals, none of which line up with precisely "Be a goody goody and save the world from the evil guys" or "Hahaha I is evil I destroy world for no reason or because I like power/money". The characters who are your friends and allies have their own motives and often attempt to manipulate you into helping their causes.

* Incredible attention to detail in the environments, making the game feel infinitely more immersive than anything Bioware have ever put out. I always hear people talking about how great DA:O's environments were, and the key example given always seems to be that the tower of Ishal has some birds flocking around the top of it. A nice environmental effect, but it's not reactive in any way. In TW, when you walk too close to a tree with birds on it (or just too close to birds on the ground), they panic and flock away in all directions. When it begins to rain, people all over the city panic and run for cover, then complain about the weather. Mice crawl about the dirty slums of Vizima. Every person in the city has their own cycle that they follow through the day and night (the game uses a scaled real-time day-night cycle rather than the DA2 approach of 2 separate places). Walking through the slums during the day has you walking past starving beggars, prostitutes attempting to lure clients in, elderly ladies attempting to find their way home. There are comedians telling jokes, live performances by bands (if you would call them 'bands'), etc.

* Music is beautiful - probably one of the best game OSTs out there.

I loved TW1 from about the end of the Prologue onwards. If you managed to get as far as part way through Chapter 2 and still weren't really into it, you probably never will be.

But that's ok, as I said, different things appeal to different people.

TW's plot is not what I'd describe as 'epic' or fast paced however. It moves quite slowly, oncovering bit by bit over the course of the game. That's enough to put many off I guess.

FIFA11 on World class or higher. Seriously, the game cheats to beat you. Suddenly every tackle you make is a yellow card and if you come within 2 feet of an opposing player they rip you to the ground with impunity.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow....the camera angles were so awful that often during combat you couldn't even see the PC! I raged quit and sold it on Amazon

Homefront - mouse control is too jerky and very slow, poorly written cliche story and characters, stopped after level 3.

W1 is not for everyone I think. It's for people that love slow mature story in world that is not good at all. You should try W2 after patch 1.3 that will come in few days. They fix most of things you describe. But dont expect full tutorial. It's still like it used to be. You have to read stuff that apear on the screen at the begining (but they block hard part of prologue so you will have easy aprts at start). This game don't hold your hand.
Also octopus boss is one of the easies one. Did you expect that octopus in size of building will hit you and you will not even have a scratch ? Grow up.

Ok. Back to main topic:
Dragon Age 2 - because I expect something better or the same as origins and I got cheap "EA pocket filler" that pray on good game name. And I dont like how they make strict Anderson a whiny gay.

Duke Nukem Forever - becase we wait 10 years just to get avarage game that is not even interesting as DN3D.

Contra (NES game)  - because I still don't know why I like it. I was playing it on NES. I was playing it on PC (yes, emulation + TV + pad). Because I have it on smartphone and I play it even now. Because I'm so god at it that I finish whole game without even 1 death and I still play it sometimes when I'm on travel. Dont know why.

I tend to stop games out of boredom rather than frustration.

Witcher 2 was the first game where I had to set the difficulty to "easy", in order to keep playing it. Lots of folks seemed to like the combat, but I found it frustrating and unforgiving.

I didn't finish Fallout 3 - I was in some underground vault, and I got lost, and I just lost interest. I also didn't like the combat system.

Didn't finish Witcher 1, or Half-Life 2 (I know... sacrilege!) , out of boredom.
