Hi, with mass effect going on sale on steam a few days ago I downloaded it but once clicking play I get the loading icon on my mouse courser then nothing! no error message. no mass effect running in task manager nothing at all. I tried restarting my computer which didn't help. I'm running windows 7 64bit, does anybody have any ideas?

Run as admin, and in XP compatability mode. If youve already tried that, post a full error report as per the "How To" thread stickied at the top of the forum.

Having done that, what was the second part of his suggestion? When did you plan to follow that up?

I'm having the same problem as this dude. I'm running Windows 7(But have tried running ME1 in compatability mode to XPSP3), have a Pentium Dual-Core CPU e5700@3 GHz, An Intel G45/G43 Express Chipset Display Adapter, and Realtek speakers. I've installed Directx 9 in order to improve the ability of my comp to work with ME1, and have been trying Mass Effect running as an Admin(And yes, specifically rightclick-Run As Admin).
I don't know what to try next.
Edit: For posterity, I bought it electronically through Steam, and whenever I try to launch, it gives me the loading whirl on my mouse cursor, then nothing. No error message, no visibly crashed program.
Edit2: I have downloaded the patch at http://masseffect.bi...ates/index.html and it made the game run. Time to save the universe.

Even if you can "run" the game your machine is far below the system requirements.
What you have is an integrated graphics chipset and not a very good one. I recommend you read the system requirements before buying a new game and if your knowledge on graphics hardware is limited, compare the minimum chipsets with what you see on the hierarchy chart: www.tomshardware.com/reviews/best-graphics-card-game-performance-radeon-hd-6670,2935-7.html
Looking at the supported chipsets is very important. A requirements like "256 MB DirectX 9.0 compatible card with shader model 3.0" is too vague.
You're lucky you got the game to boot but you might run into some other problems. There is one timed mission objective near the end that is nearly impossible when you have a low framerate. It's possible this may turn out game breaking for you.

Beyond the very low quality Intel tinker toy of a video chip, the piggy back rider here has a Core Duo variety of a Celeron, with 90% of the Core's cache RAM ripped out to make the CPU very cheap to produce. That also makes it very low performance, way below what is intended for game playing.
Forcing a cheap PC such as that to do something it isn't designed to do will shorten its usable life rapidly. It just can't handle the resulting heat, and that will degrade the components, particularly the chipset.

Having the exact same problem atm, tried running both steam and the game as admin still no avail to this point.
Nevermind, I have downloaded and applied patch 1.02 as per kahrytes suggested and it's been working since, period, anyways thanks for the heads up!

A lot of "crashing with no error message" can be attributed to playing on a system that is below the minimum requirements to play the game.
If you have Windows Vista/Windows 7, however, there is a built-in application that cause the same error. The User Account Control within Windows is basically a sentry that checks, doublechecks, and triple checks when a user makes changes to the PC.
Here's a link on how to disable it: http://support.ea.co...detail/a_id/380

another possible fix is to try msconfig. i have to use it to play dead space, turns out that game just doesn't like new tech. i'm also having major problems getting ME1 working but now the disk is screwed according to Nero so I have to wait till my replacement turns up to see if it makes a difference. anyway msconfig will basically tell you if it's anything other than what windows needs to run, good tool for diag.
