First off, I apologize for posting this here.. I believe this would be better placed in the Character builds forum, but when I try to post there, I get a "You do not meet the requirements to post in this forum." message. So unfortunately I must ask here.

I just purchased the Ultimate Edition of Dragon Age: Origins    And so this will be my first playthrough.  Given I do not have all that much time on my hands, I probably will not get around to playing a 2nd time through.  So I need to properly choose what I will play as.

I know you can manually control your companions that you gain.. but as the PC, he is the one who will become the strongest  for a given class compared to a companion of similar class, so I want to make sure I choose right.

My goal is to choose a class that is the most FUN to play.  I know this is very much up to personal taste.  But I have  a feeling some may stand out more then others.  I'm curious what those are.

I was thinking heavily on being the Main Tank.. becoming a Dwarf Warrior using  sword and Shield  tank build.  I 've been reading up on it. But that will mean passing Allaistair as a companion. And I've read he's the most interesting ccompanion in the game.  And since he's a Tank.. it's a conflict, in that I do not want to have 2 tanks in my party.

My 2nd choice is possibly a Dwarf Warrior   using 2handers, and go for Raw Damage.  How fun is this type of char overall?

My 3rd chocie is a Rogue (probably Human).  Not sure.    Playing as a duel wield char.    Any fun?

4th choice is a rogue again . (probably human).. as an assassin, sneaking about, letting the others engage first and come in with a massive backstab crit.   Any Fun?

5th , I was thinking of an Elf Mage   as a full all out offensive spell caster.   I've also heard Mages are the most powerful class in the game.    But typically speaking, I've always been a melee type of person, and not a magic user in RPG's.  I've always preferred  getting up close and personal. Hesne my first 4 choices being melee types.  But still I'll ask. How fun is Mage as the main PC?

And lastly as 6th possible choice.  An Archer type char. Probably Human Rogue as an archer .  Appeals to me less then the mage. But again out of interest of which is most fun in THIS game.. I'd like to know.

So again the overall point here.. Is what is fun in the context of how this game plays. The game mechanics etc.  Which class do you all think is most fun?  Which choice should I go with?

Thanks,  Rewban.

My canon Warden is a sword and board warrior tank. If you enjoy playing as one, I see no reason why you should not. The other companions will be your companions whether or not you take them with you on every quest. Whether Alistair is an especially interesting companion is subjective - and you have plenty of opportunity to get to know all of your companions, including Alistair, outside of the quests.

You're not stuck with any particular weapon specialty. A DAO warrior can use S/S, dual-wield, bow, crossbow, two-handed weapon - pretty much anything. As you level up and invest in skills, there are some that are generic "warrior" skills (also true of rogues and mages), and others that are weapon specific (or spells for mages).

Have fun!

If you register your game here (key is on the manual) you should be able to post in the character build forum.

The class I enjoyed the most is the warrior. With dual-wield or two-handed you become a real beast on the battlefield! Dual-wield is pretty easy as long as you put enough points into dexterity for the talents, but you'll end up auto-attacking if you want maximum dps.

Two-handed is the opposite. An effective two-hander is all about chaining the abilities together. Pump strenght and add some willpower for extra stamina. Items that improve stamina regeneration is important for the two-hander, as well as the very effective sunder arms ability. It will be your main attack, and you can get it right off the start! Since the two-hander always uses abilities it can be a little hard at the start, but as you proceed throught the game you'll learn to do it effectively!

In my opinion, two-handed is the most fun of the 2. However, it really depends on your playstyle, and you won't go wrong with either. B)

You could still bring Alistair along if your warden is the tank. Just have Alistair pick up talents from one of the other weapon types. While he will have some unused weapon+shield talents, he should have time to pick up enough to still be effective in combat, especially since you recruit him early on.

I had fun as a dual wield rogue. They do great damage with momentum+backstabbing, and it's fun to scout ahead and disarm traps while under stealth, and the ability to pick locks is certainly useful. As a rogue you'd be a bit more compatible with Alistair in a combat setting, as he can tank while your warden does the bulk of the party's damage.

Also, since you're new to the game, check the wiki link in my signature. It's full of helpful Dragon Age info.

Alternatively you can make him a damage focused weapon+shield warrior. If you pump strength and max the top line of shield talents he can dish out pretty nice damage. Of course, a two-hander or dual-wielder might out-damage him, but it's certainly an option if you don't want those 4 talents to go to waste, and the damage difference is not that big of a deal. Even on nightmare, you'll do fine without min/maxing every character. ;)

A dual-wield rogue is, as Arthur points out also a very entertaining character, however, it can be a bit hard on the first playthrought as you don't start to shine until you can get combat stealth, and many of the rogue mechanics requires some experience with the game before they can be handled effectively.

The two-handed warrior can also become immune to stun & knockdown effects, this is a considerable advantage, as those effects can be devastating to most characters... B)

True, the wiki is great, but watch out for spoilers! ^_^

Through personal experience with each class, my favorite has been a dual-wield warrior (massive DPS) or a rogue archer (massive DPS, as well). Playing as a mage was fun, but I was only doing 20% of total damage or so... So I think I did something wrong. xD For entertainment purposes, I'd choose an archer. Especially in Awakening, the archer is an effective long-range DPS and possible kite-tank. Plus, it's just so satisfying to snipe someone with Arrow of Slaying from 30 yards away. ^^

Edit:  As a maxxed dex archer, hitting a single target for 720 damage was common with Arrow of Slaying talent.

Weapon & Shield Style
Reaver/Templar

Romance Zevran

Grey Warden path through the game (Do whatevers nessary to stop the Blight at any cost, this means some deicisions will be bad or good not just one sided as you play through. Kinda a neutral in that reguards story path)

I've beaten the game about 6 times as a dual-wielding rogue so I'd definitely give that a try. Either that or mage, the warrior classes are a bit boring to me.

You kinda either have to duel wield or be a archer as a rogue....not the same options you get as a warrior of duel, twohand, s&s, and archery.

I've played the most as a dual wielding rogue. It's the most versatile of the choices. You can explore more easily, avoid fights if you'd like, solo, team and alter play style based upon mood or whim.

As for Origin, it depends upon how you play. Human is the stereotypical fantasy origin.

Dwarf noble is the most intricate and involved of the origins. If you like power politics, this is the origin for you.

Dalish elf is the other stereotypical fantasy origin. If you're playing through the expansions (Witch Hunt especially), this turns out to be quite good.

The two mage origins are so similar, it doesn't much matter which. The mage origin is quite brief.

The dwarf commoner origin has crowning moment of awesome in it. If you like rags to riches, it's quite good. You will be spending a lot of type with the dwarves. The two dwarf origins give valuable but differing insights.

The city elf origins differs depending upon which sex you play. It is quite moving playing as a female. It is less so as a male.

FWIW, I very much prefer city elf female, especially as a dual wielding rogue. All the choices make sense and it's a fun game.

I like to scream and leap in combat, so I tend to DW rogues. Just as (or more deadly) than a DW warrior, IMO, plus I open all my own chests. And there's the glory of stealthing up behind mages before combat starts and then annihilating them with a Triple Strike. ^_^

I loved my archer character, but I hated standing out of combat going 'plink plink plink.' (You'll be a god of war in Awakening, though.) Haven't finished my warrior PT yet. Mages are OK but no big deal for me; my husband, OTOH, loves his giant overlapping AoE spells. "Reach out and touch someone" is his favorite kind of fun in combat.

I haven't found that I really need to care about who has what skills when building a party, although a rogue with Deft Hands is nice (for the locks and traps). You really don't have to have one tank, one DPS, one healer and one ranged damage. Use the companions you like.

My favorite Origins are dwarf commoner and city elf, I think, although that doesn't exactly line up with my favorite PCs. The Dalish Origin is narratively extremely simple; it's probably the shortest Origin with the fewest areas, and it's commonly called out as being the least connected-to-the-story Origin. All the same, my Dalish is one of my two favorites.

Depends on my mood, I go with either sword and shield warrior, 2 handed warrior, or DW rogue, I like to be in the middle of the action with all the blood flying around me with swords and axes dripping with blood. I have completed only one playthrough as a mage and I have never played as an archer (no offense archer fans but sitting back and firing little arrows with my bow just doesn't appeal to me or my dwarves with big axes)

I just (last night) finished my first run all the way through. I was a dwarf noble warrior that did all the shield skills, and a smattering of others (including archery). Alistar I configured with a lot of archery as I wanted him as backup tank in case he got ganged up on. The rest of my party was generally Wynne and Morrigan, though I occasionally went back to areas with Leilana just to unlock all the chests. I generally ignored traps, they were a minor inconvenience. One thing I did was seriously crank my dexterity. I could stand in the middle of dark spawn hordes with them them whiffing all around my while I took down the alpha/emmisary/whatever. This also did wonders for my archery and we could thin hordes way down while they were on their way to us.

Dual wielding rogue is the most fun. The game is already easy enough so the small things that the build requires make up for it.
