All the armor in my inventory and in shops is restricted to Hawke. If I look in ventory or in shops it is all unusable by my companions. I can't upgrade any of their armor. Looks like a bug to me. It noticed it shortly after I picked up the Dragon Armor from special delivery. It could have also been introduced when I down loaded the 1.03 pach.

Someone else had a similar question the other day, so I'm going to be incredibly lazy and copy & paste my response to that thread...
The companions do not get armor pieces, unless you have a specific mod for that. What you will find are armor upgrades in shops and various crates/barrels/etc. These won't appear in your inventory when you grab them, but they will fill one of the armor slots on a companion's profile pic (as visible when in the inventory screen).
A lot of armor is reserved for Hawke, and will be tagged as such. I believe it's intentional to find restrictive armor that may be "applicable" to different classes, because there is less of a class restriction defined than an attribute restriction (for example, one piece may require 20 dex, whereas another may require 20 constitution, etc - typically a rogue would have a higher dex, so that armor would seem rogue-specific, but it boils down to how you allot your attributes).
The majority of the weapons should be usable by the companions. Varric is the only one who cannot change weapons. Depending on how far along in the game you are, it may seem that you're not getting a lot of switchable weapon options, but you should see more as you progress.
