Been having this problem for a while now, the auto login to the
cerberus network fails, but logging in manually works.  I plug straight
in to a cable modem, so no wireless or router involved, and I've tried
with my antivirus turned off but it still fails; windows firewall is
off.  I thought maybe my profile key was corrupt so I renamed it but a
new one also fails.  Thought maybe it was Windows 7 but it happens in XP
as well :(  ANy fix for this?  It's really annoying having to type in
the email/password every time I want to play.

No fix for it that we kow of. You could try EA supoptr and see if they are aware of any way around it.
You dont have to login however. Once you have your DLC verified with your account in game, you can just switch off the "Login to EA" under Extras -> Options -> Online.

Same problem here as I just purchased it on Steam during the big summer sale. Not a big issue but annoying nonetheless. Will just turn off auto-login for now I guess ...

Why bother bumping? There is literally NOTHING we can do here to help you. These are user to user based support forums, and all official tech support is performed by EA. I suggest you take up your concerns with them if you want this fixed. Otherwise, disable EA login and play offline.

The following steps should fix your autologin to the cerberus network:

1. Start Mass Effect 2 as administrator
2. Login manually to cerberus network
3. Set autologin to true in options if you not already have done so
4. Exit the game
5. Start Mass Effect 2 normally.

Autologin should work now.

Yup, problem was with all the EA "authorization servers" for BioWare games. DA2 was fixed almost immediately, DAO took weeks, and ME2 is finally working correctly as well.

AFAIK, there never has been an official acknowledgement, much less an apology, from EA. But the BioWare devs said they raised the issue repeatedly with EA...
Guess they finally got through. Posted Image

Or not. The auto-connect problem still happens. Never had a problem in this regard with DA or any other game than ME2. I am otherwise very impressed with ME2, this is my only major (for me) technical problem with it.

I'm wondering if there's a Steam workaround to fix this?

Cerberus Network has nothing do to with Steam, so no, there is no Steam based workaround.
If Ernie4711's fix doesnt work for you, it might be possible that you have ECN enabled on your machine. Its enabled by default on Vista and Win7 machines. Open up a command prompt and type in the following command;
netsh interface tcp set global ecncapability=disabled

Yes, it's been a problem for months.
Yes, it's a problem on the EA server-side, (so nothing you can do at your end.)
Yes, you simply have to log-in manually every time.  (And if you can't do that, you've changed something else on your rig.)
Yes, they already know about it.

No, BioWare can't "fix" it, since it isn't a game issue.
No, complaining about it to your fellow players here in this forum won't help.

Ernie4711 provided the solution several posts back and I missed it. (Thanks, Ernie!)
See next post below for a copy of it. (talking about using  the "Run as Administrator" option for the Launcher.)
Turns out it is  an issue with our rigs... sort of. Posted Image

This fixed it for me, thanks!

Really minor but was annoying.

Given that manual log-in always works, I'd say it's nothine EA-side OR firewall related. I'd actually suspect the game simply has the wrong password stored...

Brilliant!  This is the fix. Posted Image

(Clarification, this is talking about using the "Run as Administrator" option for the Launcher.)

Thx Ernie.  If the BSN had Kudos, I'd give you one!

Hooray! Ernie4711's fix worked for me.

Misc info for those who care:
Win7 x64, ECN already disabled.
Game purchased through Steam (Digital Deluxe edition), all available DLC downloaded and installed from game website (except Genesis).

Thanks, Ernie4711! Your fix worked for me.
Still, I had to alter it a little because my autologin was turned on.
So, I turned it off, restarted the game, logged in manually and then turned it on.
Bingo! :)

UPD: Just for 1 time. Too bad. :(
