I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong here, or if this battle is just unusually difficult.  I met that final horde of Tal-Vashoth near the end of the "Shepherding Wolves" quest (the one in the caverns).  There was a Leader and one of the Qunari mages, and about a half a million warriors (okay, it just seemed that way).  I was around level 8, and the party included Hawke as a mage, Merril, Avaline, and Varric.

I was playing on Insanity.  After getting destroyed repeatedly out in the open (nothing I did seemed to work, even when I micromanaged the tactics), I tried leaving the party down the steps to the door, and then luring them in one at a time (or a few at a time).  I was able to put the leader down, but then the mage came along and we also started to get swarmed.

Is it just me, or did anyone else find this spike in difficulty just a tad off the charts?

You can get overwhelmed pretty easily, if you don't properly crowd control the horde. Spells like Cone of Cold, Gravitic Ring, Pull of The Abyss, Crushing Prison, Horror, Glyph of Paralysis are your best friends here. Cone of Cold is particualary strong here, since Qunari are weak to cold damage.
Basically you need to apply crowd spells/talents to keep them from overwhelming you. Then focus on whatever CCC's you have and do some damage (Shield Bash -> Chain Lightning, Pinning Shot -> Stonefist/Spirit Bolt/Scatter/Assault, etc...). If you are not getting overwhelemed, just keep on attacking, and kill anthing before it gets too close. Apply a couple of more cc spells and you shouldn't have too much trouble after that. Also, cold and nature staves help A LOT against Qunari.
This can be a difficult fight, but like I said, cc spells, ccc's, and cold and nature damage can pretty much tivialize it, if used properly.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the suggestions. Guess I'll have to bring loads of mana potions. It's funny, I tried Insanity with two different classes of "Hawke", and the mage one always seems to have an easier time. Maybe I just got lucky with the build.

NP. And yeah, mages have it easier in general, but things tend to get a bit tricky when you get overwhelmed and don't have the means to control the situation.
I think I was around lvl.11 when I played this particular mission as a mage, and I had both Gravitic Ring and Pull of The Abyss in my arsenal. These two spells alone can make a lot of these seemingly overwhelming encounters pretty much trivial. And having Anders with Valiant Aura, Glyph and Haste, things get even more ridiculous.

Priorities 1-Saarebas 2-Ranged they are the only things you should be bothered about
The rest arent worth Hawkes time, lowest rank when taking out ranged is the way to go, the quicker you destroy the main threats the less damage you take.
If its still causing trouble then kill saarebas asap and pull the rest to the corridoor.
