The Commedore 64 was my first computer. Loved that thing. I think Bard's Tale was my first cRPG on it. Back when EA was about Electronic Artists, rather than profit. Very different company now.

LOL I had a Vic-20 and I was jealous of my friend's C-64 because it seemed so much more powerful!

Later when we bought our first PC, I used to play Pool of Radiance, Masters of Orion and the original Civilization quite a lot back in my junior high or elementary school days.

During the recent Steam summer sale, I bought a few new (to me) old school games
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines
Fallout 1
Fallout 2
Star Wars: KoTOR

Good pics.   Don't forget to get the Wesp5 unoffical patch (ver 7.5) for Bloodlines,  The Restoration project for Fallout 2 and the Restored content mod for KotR 2.

You might want to throw some hardcore difficulty mods on the Star Wars games too.   I know after playing Baldurs Gate, the combat seemed too easy.

I've gamed since the Nintendo era but the only old console I like to frequently revisit is the Dreamcast. The graphics for the Dreamcast have a clean, timeless look to them that still hold up well even today despite not being as detailed as modern games.

Plus, it was the last true arcade style console since arcades in the USA died around the same time as the Dreamcast's demise. As such the Dreamcast is home to many great arcade style shoot em ups, fighting and racing games. Great great console!

xbox isn't really "retro"...

i grew up with consoles like the NES and PC games like oregon trail and sim city 2000 and wolfenstein 3d and commander keen, and i still enjoy playing these games, so i guess you could call me "retro" some of the time

i used to collect whatever old gaming tech tho, at one point i got an atari 2600 and an arcade machine called "jet fighter" from a yard sale for free, that was pretty cool

I started out with an old Atari 800XL plus a floppy disk drive and four games: Joust (cartridge), Millipede (cartridge), Phantasie (disk) and Gemstone Warrior (disk). Those were great for the days when the gang lacked money to go to the arcades, which was where we spent virtually all our time otherwise.

Because money was in short supply those days (getting anything upward of $2 for a day at the arcades was rare), everyone made a point of training themselves to beat arcade games on a single credit if possible. If I remember correctly, I managed it with Altered Beast, Double Dragon, Ninja Emaki, Cadash, Aliens, Moonwalker, Willow, Bonanza Bros, ESWAT and on the Neo-Geo, Midnight Wanderers and Top Hunter, before the arcades closed down.

On the homeside, one of my friends had a Commodore 64 (I got a 128 eventually, but not for some years), so there were a ton of great games I played on that like Arkanoid, Jet Set Willy, ELITE, Airborne Ranger, N.O.M.A.D and the Last Ninja. His father liked strategy games a lot, so we often got to watch (but not play) submarine and flight simulators that I forget the names to and this Cold War sim called Red Storm Rising.

Good times.

Thanks for the tips - I installed patch 7.5 for bloodlines and so far it seems like a fascinating game.

The only problem is that every time I attack, or get attacked, the camera automatically switches to third person view, facing the camera. It is really odd because then I can't attack anything, since my attacks are in the opposite direction of where I can see.

I tried remapping the "toggle view" key, but that just switches between first person view and third person facing camera, so while I'm fighting I have to keep pressing the same button to switch back to first person, but ultimately I can't hit anything because I keep getting knocked into third person facing camera.

Is there any way to enable a third person facing forward (away from camera, or OTS) view, or change the setting so it doesn't automatically go to third person when you are attacked?

@AlanC9 would that be UFO Defense? In the UK it was called Enemy Unkown

Enemy Unknown. The game still holds up.

Is it an RPG? You've got characters, loot, experience..... if it isn't an RPG, why isn't it?

Did you try pressing Z ?

And X-Com Enemy Unknown (aka- UFO Defense) does look great.  (just got it myself)    That and Jagged Alliance 2 :D   As much as i love the Infinity Engine games, i really dig the good tactical turn based stuff.   Looking foward to playing TOEE with the Circle of 8 Fixpack too.

thanks - I figured it out. I had to switch between NumLock on and NumLock off a couple times.

the NumPad 2 button switches the camera view back to forward facing (OTS). really interesting game.

Yep the Gallop Brothers certainly knew how to make a great game. Does anyone remember their very first (or pretty near first) game Chaos? It was out on the speccy and likely a on few other platforms too. Turned based of course ;)
Also I can certainly recommend the Circle of 8 pack for good old Temple of Elemental Evil. A gem of a game that and pretty tough too!

Have been thinking of trying out one of the Jagged Alliance games, but I would really like to see the original X-Com game get a well deserved modern make over, and yes I know about the new up and coming X-Com game, but that looks more like a FPS.

Thinking about X Com again made me remember this rather cool open-source project.

Yea, they're turning everything into a damn action game these days.  Do yourself a favor, get some Jagged Alliance 2 and forget about this new bs X-Com.   www.mcvuk.com/news/read/interview-christophhartmann-2kgames/082216

That Ray Charles/Kanye West comment was painful.

I read that Jullian Gollop sold the X-Com license, which means that if you but the old X-Com games the $$$ isn't going to the original creators anymore.  So...

I just started the game last night, but Vampire the Masquerade has been amazing so far - it seems to have very well-written quests.

If you're referring to Bloodlines and not to the terrible Redemption: Bloodlines has the best characters & voice-over of any RPG I've encountered. Also, the facial animations are amazing for its time and still better than most games out today... probably only LA Noire beats it.

Ahhhhhhhhhh, I remember Workbench. Precursor to Windows, right there!  Also, stable as all hell, it was. The only time it ever went wrong we when I accidentally sort of semi-deleted the operating system.

One re-install (from 14 floppies) later, every was working perfectly again.

Depends on what you consider retro, but yeah I play my share of "retro" games. I got KotOR 1&2, Unreal(the first game), used to have Shattered Steel, Rage Incoming, Metroid, Super Metroid, and I'm always up for some F-Zero X.

I love retro games, they can defy time. I played The Legend of Zelda again not too long ago. A very well crafted game fro it's age.

I've been looking up this game since I first heard it on NMA forums, and it looks pretty freaking awesome. I just wish they would give a release date or something (haven't check back so I don't know if its been updated). Looks like a must buy for me.

Anyways, VtM:B has the best voice acting of any game I've ever seen, and the voices are very consistent. Unlike New Vegas, there isn't really a huge gap in talent like going from Chet to Caesar. The voice acting just isn't really consistent since Caesar's voice actor had major talent while I thought Chet's sounded too much like he was just reading from a shopping list or something. I know New Vegas had some of the best voice acting of any modern game, but that was the first game that came to mind.

I don't play it that often but its the only game from that era that I can still pick up and play now. My favourite game ever.

Its a combination of genres, resource allocation, strategy, tactical turn based squad shooter, and rpg. Absolutely ahead of its time. Funny how even when they make copies such as UFO: ET they can't even include features that the original had like destructible terrain.
