Small question: How does the intro of ME2 play out if you didn't romance anyone in the first game, but allowed the human squaddie of the opposite gender to die? Does Liara come for you, or is it the human squaddie of the same gender?

Also, what are the exact romance triggers back in ME1?

Don't know the answer to your main question, but regarding the ME1 romance triggers, I believe being polite and grateful after waking up on the Normandy after Eden Prime. The opposite sex human squaddie will be there and as I recall you are given two chances to be nice to them, you will notice they blush a little or raise an eyebrow, you will definitely be able to tell from their body language if you triggered it.

Liara's, I don't remember. But I seem to remember it's almost impossible for not to crush on you.

maybe its random cause my manshep left Ash on Virmire and didn't romance anyone but Liara came for me.

You're either playing the PS3 version or you got ninja'd by Liara. For some mindboggling reason even if you turn her down after a certain point the romance seems to stay flagged. O_o

Turning people down before Illos won't effect any romance. They'll all remain active which isn't too much of a stretch seeing as how Shepard's lines are more or less "this is not the time". Turning people down by the lockers is only possible with Kaidan.

If you have Genesis, or PS3, it will be Liara, as you dont get to make the VS choice until Genesis kicks in, which is after the SR1 gets blown to smithereens.

Yeah just realised that it was probably the play through where i used genesis, so that'd be why i got Liara.
