Recently had a virus that broke my registry and had to system restore to about a week ago.  ME2 no longer runs, it crashes right after the developer logo movies and before loading the main menu.  The first screen loads, I press the Any key, the camera zooms out and then the game dies.  I uninstalled and reinstalled, with no change.  Also, re-installing DLC says "you must install Mass Effect 2 first" and they won't install.  Steam version, Windows XP.

Any help would be much appreciated.

might still have the virus or you just have broken registry.
Bogs on here recommends CCleaner and Gary Utilities to wipe and fix registry issues. Otherwise manual editing of registry to eliminate all instances of ME and then reinstalling would probably be required. You may have to go all the way to reinstalling the op system to fully clean everything up if the virus did a bunch of damage.

Anyone happen to know where the ME2 installation keys are in the registry (off the top of their head, inorite? lol) so I can try cleaning it out and installing fresh? In the meantime I'll try the utilities.

Go to EA's support page and enter "manual uninstall of mass effect 2" in the search field, and one of the results will tell you where to fnid them.

Complete reinstall of OS, clean ME2 install, still no change. DLC's install now though so I guess the registry is fixed. Still crashes after the black-hole screen.

We'll need some system specs in order to help trouble shoot this now. Take a screenshot of the "System" tab in the ME2 config utility and post it so we know what we are dealing with.

Just "fixed" it actually, by deleting the settings folder in mydocuments. Apparently some corrupt data in my imported games? Dunno, but it runs now.

Fast response wow...
