So, my girlfriend bought NWN2 from steam yesterday so we could play together.

Both copies are installed and updated and both work in single player fine. The problem is in multiplayer, whoever is host, the game runs fine and normal, but for whoever is joining the host gets random lag spikes or will just completely lag out until they exit and rejoin.

Hoping someone can shead some light on this issue for me or find a way to help fix this.
Thanks

Without standard, routine problem diagnosis information, you can plain forget about any answers. You've offered nothing usable so far.

Need info on other computer she is using. Are you both on the same LAN or going across the Internet, if the Internet then the router is an issue as well?

Our PCs are pretty much the same only difference is that she only has 3 gigs of ram and smaller hard drives.

We both use the same ISP so our connections are the same, we both have the same router.
Linksys e2000, ports are all open. We can connect and play with each other, we just get lag spikes.

I seem to have the exactly same problem with my friend, the person joining the hosted game is getting these lag spikes. The strange thing about this is that on my screen nothing else seems to respond to anything but moving via the WASD keys. When I go talk to a npc, on my screen nothing happens but on the other end at my friends screen, the dialogue starts.

The other problem we had was the one that you can't connect to any private online games, only those PW servers seems to work. We also did the portforwarding as it should be done. Now we're using Hamachi to even be able to connect to eachothers games.

Any help regarding these two problems would be highly appreciated.

WASD keys apparently introduce lag via pathfinding challenges (going from memory - it's been a while)... suggest not using them.

I mean WASD keys are the only way of moving around during those lag spikes (atleast on my screen), clicking some destination with mouse just does nothing. When the game is running normally, my WASD keys works just fine.

Did some testing yesterday and it would appear that those lag spikes occur 90% of the time when you open your character sheet + inventory. Opening them briefly (let's say 5-10 seconds) causes minor lag spike, which lasts for around 10 seconds.
Then pretty much after every level up, the game just totally freezes. This lag after level up doesn't seem to fix itself at all, only way to go, is to reconnect to the game.

Another strange thing I noticed was that every time these lag spikes occur, Teamspeak (v 3) doesn't recognize my voice at all but I can still hear my friend speaking, even tho his voice is breaking up a bit.

We also tried the other way around, me hosting the game and my friend joining in. Same story there, if he opens the character sheet + inventory, the lag strikes almost instantly.

It would seem like there's a problem with the host server communicating with the client, host can see all the movement etc from the client, then on the client side, your game is totally frozen apart from the WASD movement.

Any ideas what might be causing this, because I for one am already out of ideas.

And just to clarify, while I am hosting a game, none of these problems occur.

Hi saamala, I'm experiencing exactly the same problem (playing the Platinum version over Steam) - the client opens character sheet and he's done, can't do anything apart from moving by WASD. The host see all he action however. Have you ever solved it? It's the most bizzare problem ever! Have you tried some kind of official support? I guess the game is too old for that now?

Thanks

Use skywings client extension. It does not fix it completely but does improve the issues involved. It works just fine with steam.

Servers should if possible use the xp_bugfix which adjusts code on the server. The two work hand in hand to replace the entire networking layer, but if you only can use one or the other it helps things quite a bit. My "Never Launcher Prototype" i am working on contains both xp_bugfix and a complete NWNx server package for the server admins ( or those who can handle complex configuration tasks ), and a game launcher with client extender for the players.
