In-game DLC sellers and DA downloader: questions

First of all, in my opinion, there should be a FAQ section in the add-on website, explaining how the DLC sellers will work, with more descriptive details on "How to purchase" in-and-out-game, and international prices for DLC. But the thread itself is for questions about sellers only.

I'm slighty confused about these NPCs. It has been mentioned that they're not in the disc. You have to use the DA downloader in other to install them. This is good, cause it gives you the option to not have them if you don't want.

But from the devs' posts I have read, it looks like if you choose to disable the downloader, you cannot install any DLC, not even Shale. So my questions are: do I need to use the DA downloader to get Shale? Can I install Shale without installing any other DLC seller (such as the WK one)?

Also, do I need this DA downloader to get the future patches, or the toolset? If I want to install a patch, do I need to allow the installation of DLC sellers?

And finally, if I decide to let the sellers be installed in the game, is there an option to turn them off so I never encounter them unless I have installed the DLC they sell? Are they different from normal quest-givers?

Thanks in advance for any answer. Post your questions regarding DLC sellers. But please don't derail the thread with discussions about Day 1 DLC. There are other threads for that.

I think the point of having to download them is if you have no internet, you wont have the pointless immersion breaking NPC's.

I honestly don't see the big deal. It's not like you're going to have NPCs running around going, "HAY if you want moar quests go HERE". That would be stupid. I'd wager that they would simply be there for you to interact with, and when you do, they'd be all "I heard of X event going on at Y location. Do you want to check it out?" and so on. Like a regular quest, not a billboard advertising something for sale.

From what the devs. have said in the now very long post (about 82-84 pages long) in the old forums, I think you will need to install the DA downloader to get Shale (and the other cool items as well such as Warden's Keep).

The NPCs that give you the DLC quests are no different than other quest givers (as I understand). They still have a quest icon above their heads (the exclamation mark, this can be turned off in the game's options menu). However, all quest DLC has their oewn tab or page? in the game's [control] menu. You can just ignore the quest being downloaded via the DLC that way.

If you talk to an NPC who gives you the first details about the quest and it then later shows up in your conversation that you need to pay for this dlc or that is indeed a dlc quest, you can just walk away saying 'no thanks, I don't want to do this'. And then you won't have access to the dlc ever - unless you change your mind, of course.

If you don't want The Warden's Keep DLC, just don't accept it. The seller will still be there, though. Just turn off his or her quest icon if you don't like being reminded about his or her dlc for which you have to pay.

As for how the patches are being delivered, the jury is still somewhat out on this - e.g we don't know yet.

I think I see what you have been driving at. I really don't want to run into guys going, "Hey click me for extra content from the EA store!" But at the same time it is neat to see where the DLC content fits into the game at the moment your going by that spot too.

I guess the only real thing we have to worry about with this is pressure tactics to make you feel like your loosing out. I don't need those. But I do really hope that only legitimately purchased copies of DA can access DLC at all. It just might be a necessary evil.

Thanks for bringing this across from the old forums Rodro.

There are some walkthrough docs coming already - hopefully they'll be up asap.  They cover how to buy content amongst other things, but don't differentiate between these NPCs and the main menu DLC store for example.  The NPCs themselves don't actually sell any DLC - they are just the quest givers for the DLC quests.

All of the DLC, and DLC store data (e.g. off of main menu), is downloaded and handled by our own content updater.   The updater is installed with the game - you don't need to download, install or run anything separately from DA:O.  This updater is a big part of what makes all DLC work.  As such, it is needed as much for the included content like Shale, or the retailer items, or future DLC.

It is worth noting that this is not the EA Download Manager.  That is a completely separate app, used if you purchase DA:O from the EA Store, but not related to the DLC.

We'll confirm how patching will work soon - we're still investigating a few options.  If possible, we'd like to make this available through as many options as possible - if that works out, you would not require the DLC updater for patches.

The toolset is a completely separate download and can be viewed as a separate app - it has no relation in that  sense to the DLC updater.  However, there are plans to take some of the best builder mods and use the same DLC delivery system to make those available for players to grab for free from the DLC store off the main menu, instead of having to come to the social site to download them.  In that specific case, you would need the DLC updater running.

The two questions are inter-dependent.  The NPCs are only quest givers for the DLC, and in that respect they have the same game mechanic as any other quest giver in DA:O.  DLC specific quest givers will only begin to show up when that specific DLC becomes available for download on the servers (or you've already downloaded the DLC).  After that, they are part of the game, like any other NPC.

I hope it's similar to BG2, so that I can just force my characters to kill off these NPCs.

Thanks for the answers, Fernando. You have solved the vast majority of my, and hopefully, other persons' doubts. Looking forward to see the walkthrough docs, and the DLC system.

I'm quite certain that you can't kill random non-enemy NPCs as it wasn't worth coding awork around for people that killed off quest givers. I hear the DLC content NPCs won't be demanding or anything. It'll be flagged somewhere in the text as DLC so you can simply decline the quest they give and ignore them and you won't ever hear about it again.

How will work DLC that contains retail box of Dragon Age on Xbox360? I will insert the promotional code somewhere on marketplace? Or will it work diferently?
