I have searched this forum using google search and checked topics that have all tried varied thing, some of them easy to try, some excessive. Tried putting a dx9 tag in the shortcut, that worked to a certain degree, but now the stuttering just takes longer to come up than before. Turned off AA, didn't solve the issue. Changed all settings to the super low and anything that could help framerate, no difference. Installed PhysX, made the worse imo.

I'm running Win 7 64-bit, with an Intel i7 Q 720 @ 1.60GHz, I have two 500gb hard drives, I have an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 1GB, sound says IDT HD Audio CODEC. I am using a laptop, but I've seen crappier laptops run this game fine

I don't know how to post the super long report other people do, and I'm not sure if I should anyway. A lot of people complain when they see that barrage of text.

Any advice would be appreciated.

The "Read first" post will tell you what information will be most helpful in solving the problem. Also, have you checked the Solutions round up thread pinned to the top? Video stuttering is one of the topics.

I have. I tried something called a clean startup, now I am having no stuttering in battle or after a short while. That may mean something is causing the slowdown that is running in the background. Gonna investigate further by trying one program at a time.

Did clean startup, to no avail. Tried triple buffering, same problem. Exhausted soultions thread. This is driving me mad.

Now, I'm going to ask something, and you may think your definition of stuttering is universal, but I assure you there are many interpretations of what that is, and you have yet specified what part of the game does it. For some of us, the video animations may seem to "jerk", almost stopping regularly, instead of being smooth. And at the same time, the audio may seem quite normal.

Amazingly enough, turning off most of the audio will sometimes remove the visual jerkiness, which shows that the decoding load for audio is the major problem for the CPU, which requires either an expensive sound card that does its own decoding, or a much better CPU that won't buckle under the audio decoding load.

Other members complaining of stuttering are specifically concerned with the audio having problems, so I want to know a great deal more about the symptoms you are seeing / hearing.

Ok I don't really understand what the hell the problem is now. It seems to be randomly happening, or sometimes not happening at all.

I would assume, when the problem was happening, it would do it for the whole game as it was stuttering for 10 seconds, every 30 seconds. It would first appear as sound tearing before the slowdown started. Dialog was repeated every 5 words for one word, and it would just act slow and noisy with the music and sounds sounding as if I had a tv on no channel as well. It's just very odd.

I am at the start of a rogue city elf's game, after the castle, just when the guards come to take me away and the grey warden recruits me.

EDIT: It's back again. Maybe it was there in the last time I started it up, I just didn't play it for long enough. It could be a sound error, and I do have some Creative software I can fiddle around with.

A more complete report of system stats and what you have tried would be really helpful (see the Read first thread I pointed out earlier). It's difficult to know what to suggest without more complete information. Some people have been able to stop sound stuttering by selecting the "force stereo" option in the options menu (I know it says it is for headphones, but it works). Many people have reported issues with multi-core processors such as the i7. Setting the game affinity to one or two cores has helped some people eliminate these problems. Hyper-threading also seems to cause issues so you may want to try turning that off. This game is just old enough that the very new or high end hardware is not necessarily a good thing.

Very interesting. I'm gonna give all that a try. What's super weird though is that Supreme Commander 2 now just had pretty much the same problem. I might have to do something drastic...

Third time is a charm, right? If you posted a complete problem report, someone might be able to help you pinpoint the problem without you having to try a thousand different solutions and without others having to make scattershot suggestions based on incomplete information...
