I have a question though, LT. Why on Earth would you purposely make Alistair hate you and then marry him?

I don't think that's possible. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you spare Loghain, your relationship with Alistair effectively ends. He either takes the throne and marries Anora (if you previously suggested this plan) or goes off into exile and become a drunkard.

If ejoslin said it, it's true. And I think she's done it enough times to bear it out in practice. He will marry a Warden who spares Loghain, but he still storms out of the Landsmeet.

No, he won't marry a warden who spares Loghain. I'm sorry I didn't specify that -- I thought that went without saying. However, he can hate a warden who kills Loghain. Hostile is an approval level.  And hardened Alistair WILL marry a hostile warden if he passes the persuade check.  And yes, there is specific dialog to this happening, though some of those lines were inappropriately triggering for warm, friendly, and adore wardens due to some mishandling of flags.

And again, there is a special flag for Alistair initiating the follow up conversation. His approval has to be at 26+, but you also have to have had quite a few conversations with him. It's the way the approval system flags work. Warm is warm, whether it's 26 or 100.

Going to double check the way that flag is coded now, though...

Edit: Oh dear, that flag is crazy.  However, if the romance is active he'll have the follow up conversation I believe.

Second edit:  Ok, tracking down code and such...  It looks like the intent of the flag is for him to have that conversation after having the initial talk.  But the way the code is written, for warm wardens it may not trigger until he switches to friendly (76+) as I believe a bad flag is used for them (pre_friendly_eligible which I believe actually is a bad flag -- friendly_eligible should have been the flag used).  Romanced wardens will get the conversation afterwards, however, regardless of approval.  It is triggered for friendly, in love, and romanced wardens.

I had some additional dialogue with a hardened Alistair when I announced my marriage to Anora before the Landsmeet. I received a 2nd opportunity to pick between Alastair and Anora and Alastair said the smartest person isn't always the best ruler. I had to pick Anora twice as ruler, and the executions option were also different. You get 1 option instead of 2 to save Alastair from the executioner's axe. I guess a hardened Alastair is more of a concern to Anora.

Darn the Landsmeet and it's many branching paths. I totally thought he would. Ah well.

Oh, and thank you for your mod, ejoslin. :)

I don't think it's unreasonable for Anora to be more concerned about a hardened Alistair.  Soft Alistair is content to be a Warden, hard Alistair wants the throne and as long as he's around, he's a figurehead a rebellion could form around.  But I can't see much point in hardening Alistair if you don't want to put him on the throne.

It really does seem like he should since he will marry Anora.  The game does make it clear that the HNF is not on an equal footing with Anora, though; probably because Anora is at least queen dowager and even though the HNF has the advantage of being an older and higher ranked family -- said family WAS stripped (though everything does get restored).

And gah, you're welcome!

Wouldn't. =] I asked about it because I couldn't imagine how you could possibly get enough points from him to a) get him up to 75 (?) points for the appropriate hardening conversation and then B) all the way back down to hostile before the Landsmeet.

@ejoslin Thanks heaps for your mod. Now I no longer have to sit through Alistair insisting he's king during the endgame even when he's still a Warden.

Although on my first playthrough I got the bug where non-king Alistair gaves the battle speech Anora should have given. Best bug ever.

Anora giving that speech is the the best reason I can come up with for kinging Alistair.
