Gamers seem to have a thing for bosses in video games - maybe it's offering a unique challenge that changes greatly over a short time, or maybe we just like beating the crap out of enormous monsters and living to tell the tale. Either way, bosses are going to always have a place in the world of video games. Who are your favorites over the years, and why?

Image IPB
Ganon, Ocarina of Time - This was more due to how it cemented its memory in my childhood than anything else. After the original gannondorf fight and rushing down a crumbling tower with zelda in hand, you were finally safe... and then the nightmare comes true - the master sword knocked out of hand, and the terror himself rises before your eyes. It's one of the most memorable boss fights ever made.

Image IPB
Giygas, Earthbound - Based off a murder scene in a movie Shigesato Ioti saw as a child, Giygas is a major fight for many reasons. It gets progressively more difficult, and much more disturbing than the majority of the game. Besides the "you can't comprehend the blah blah of giygas" meme, it's clever to include one of paula's character-specific moves for a heart-warming moment in the heart of darkness.

Sephiroth, FF7 - Yep, it's this one. Perhaps this fight wasn't the biggest stretch from kefka, but it had 2 things that kept it in gamer culture - the longest, over-the-top attack(supernova) from a boss in the game, and One-Winged Angel. It's in my list due to the latter - as a kid, that music scared the living crap out of me like no other. although it's played out now, there's still something chilling about this song that launched the white-haired antagonist to where he is today - floating in clouds, casting spells on a spiky-haired protagonist.

???, Mother 3 - For Spoilerific reasons in case you decide to ever try the best game nearly no one in the US has ever played, this is the final boss of Mother 3. I can't reveal much else other than it's more than worthy of being added to the list.

The Mine Cart Boss, Gunstar Heroes - One of the most intense boss fights you'll ever face. Constantly changing forms(and directions which you fight him), this fight defines action in every way imaginable. Survive the difficult fight, and you'll feel a genuine sense of accomplishment.

Image IPB
The Great Mighty Poo, Conker's BFD - This fight has to be on the list. For one thing, it's a singing pile of poo that's defeated by toilet paper, so it's a memorable fight. Anyone who finished that game probably still knows half the lyrics to the song(or at least the first few lines). Perhaps not the most challenging, but one of the more memorable fights ever made.

Wolfenstein 3D   Guten Tag
So many hours I spent playing this game / designing new levels for my friends. Good old times.

You can hear him saying "guten tag" every time you see him. That was sooo great back then Image IPB

Ganon I definitely agree. As a child he was hard but it's the memories it brings back. Also Great Might Poo fun fight and his singing is just hilarious.

Gonna go with Kael'thas Sunstrider in World of Warcraft. I was in guild who raided but were not like hardcore about it. So it took us awhile but we manage to kill him before the nerf and it was fantastic. It was so fun. After 3 wipes we just managed to kill him somehow. It was great. I played as a Hunter and remembered getting to wield that temporary legendary bow it was awesome. Good memories and tough fights. Now WoW is too easy.

Ganon and Sephy I agree with as well, I also like the fights with Bowser in Mario 64 and how it changed up stuff on you. Also most of the boss fights in the MGS games are pretty good, most note worthy would be the fights in MGS3. Sure I'll think of some more after a bit.

The Wizard-Overlord- I know I'm obsessed, but hell, I'm obsessed. The final boss in Overlord is the old Overlord who has possessed one of the heroes that tried to kill him, the Wizard. After you take the throne and kill the other heroes who took part one by one-each of which has been corrupted the Wizard-the Wizard comes back and gives you the boot, and you have to kill him to retain the throne. The kicker- the two mutually exclusive "love interests" (if they could even be called that) are his daughters. The one you abandon attempts to help the Wizard take you down..

Shadow Link
-Legend of Zelda, Ocarina of Time- He was just an awesome concept.

Robert de Sable
-Assasin's Creed-He is the last Templar target in the first Assasin's creed, after which you must kill your master for his greed. Robert de Sable is attempting to unite the Crusaders under Richard the Lionheart and the Arabs under Saladin against the Assasins, as your targets from previous missions were Templar agents that held status with both of the opposing forces.  When you reach Richard and tell him of Robert de Sable's conspiracy, he laughs and says "let God decide," and you and de Sable fight it out to see who is telling truth. Upon his death, he tells you of your master's deception-to both the Templars and you..

Definitely Ganon, but old ancient 8-bit Nintendo piggy Ganon. Mainly because the original Legend of Zelda left an indelible impression on me as a young girl, and also because when he is in his final death throes, he looks to be in some dance poses.

But also the Duchess from American McGee's Alice. She was wicked, formidable, and just all out creepy. That entire game was made more bone-chilling from the music.

The master in fallout, Kerghan in arcanum and the transcendant one in torment. All three could be defeated without a raised fist if you had the brains and were damnably interesting antagonists.

Oh god I so hated fighting that Wizard, pain in the ass. And I agree with adding Shadow Link for the concept of him alone, seems some cool vids about that back at newgrounds years ago.

The Master:

http://t3.gstatic.co...H85m_sYfHhw&t=1

Was both the toughest and easiest boss I've ever fought. Pretty morally grey as well since his idea wasn't that off. People would transcend into the next evolution of man, but the sterility is the huge flaw. Join... die... join... die.

Dracula from several of the "Castlevania" games. Also Death from that same series. Why? Because it's freakin' Dracula and Death! That's why!

Rugal from "the King of Fighters '94". That was the most memorable fighting game boss ever. You land on his aircraft carrier and see a bunch of statues made from the bodies of warriors he defeated. One of them strong resembles Guile, no less. Then he fights you in his suit. After defeating him he loses the suit and cuts loose with a combination of Geese Howard and Wolfgang Krauser's moves. As a long time SNK fan, that moment was epic beyond words.

The Transcendent One from "Planescape: Torment". Kefka and the statues leading up to him in FF3. Not too hard a boss, but the music was great.

For me the charisma, personal story, motivation and role in the game have always been more important than ingame difficulty.

So my current No. 1 Boss(?) is Letho of Gulet from Witcher 2.

Image IPB

SPOILER ALERT!

That guy besides being badass, smart and invincible, as Geralt's (Witcher's main character) comrade and fellow witcher in arm, looked after Geralt's girlfriend (?) while he was dead, practically tried to avoid combat as much as possible during the whole game, claiming that he is not Geralt's enemy, had a chance to kill Gearalt but decided not to, protected another(?) Geralt's girlfriend and eventually when the player (Geralt) finally had a chance to confront him (the fight was optional), he offered Geralt a Vodka to drink for old friendship! What a guy! :crying:

Thus Letho successfully surpassed my alltime hero Walton Simons from Deus Ex.B)

Image IPB

EDIT: Gotta give a credit to one more guy. Special honorable mention for enaraging me so many times with auto-adjust-skill ability, I have to mention [in Unreal Tournament's announcer's voice: ] Mmmmalcooolm! (from UT 2004)

Reaperized Saren From ME1 might still be my favorite. Letho or Draug from TW2 are a close second. Being able to walk away entirely from a final boss fight was a gutsy move by CDPR imo. And Letho was a clever bastard. The final boss fight in DA:O was pretty impressive as well.

The rattlesnake from Deadly Creatures for the Nintendo Wii.

No, I'm being dead serious. Just check out how epic this fight is...

Deadly Creatures btw is a hidden gem on the Wii and will no doubt be considered a collector's item in 5-10 years.

WoW blood princes, because I love running around DPSing those stupid orbs while everyone else does the real fighting... Damn guild always giving me the crap jobs.

Seriously though, favourite bosses...

Sarevok - Baldur's Gate
"Face ME! FACE THE NEW LORD OF MURDER!" .. 'Nuff said. Nothing exceptional about the fight itself, he hits like a truck but he didn't seem to do anything special, but the build-up, the atmosphere, it's one of my most memorable boss fights ever. Irenicus just didn't compare, personally.

Yaga-Shura - BG:TOB
It was pretty hectic with all those extra enemies spawning around the place, which I love in a boss fight, rinse&repeat phases in boss fights suck IMO, I prefer having to react on the spot to planning everything in advance. Also, after all his "I'm immortal" bluster it was satisfying to put him in his place.

Chronos - God of War 3
It played more like its own level than a boss fight, and it was insanely epic. The mechanics were pretty simple but the look and the feel were amazing (And the finishing move? Holy crap!).

Goblin - Spiderman 3
Made impressive use of the open world in the fight, had me going all over the city while I was fighting him which was really fun. Somewhat lessened by my not really caring about the character but as a fight it was pretty fun, by the end I had no idea where I was on the map, I was too busy fighting to notice how far I'd come.

Joseph Bertrand III - inFamous 2
Another fight that made good use of the open world, even if his path did feel scripted. Similarly to chronos the mechanics were pretty simple, but it felt so epic it didn't really matter.

Fortuido (Bayonetta)
If the weirdness of an upside-down head serving as a body for a two-headed dragon wasn't enough ... he gets suplexed by Bayonetta for huge P.O. factor.

Kintaro (Mortal Kombat II)
Not the nerfed version from the recent MK remake, the MKII arcade version of Kintaro was memorable for having attacks with priority over virtually everything.

Onikage (Tenchu)
Cooler than Mei-oh, since he can block sword strikes with his shins.

Reala (NiGHTS)
Had a cool level, cool music and looked cooler than NiGHTS, though that seems to be a frequent thing for evil twins.

And at the top ...

Jennifer (Splatterhouse)
Again, this is the original 1988 arcade version rather than the recent remake. It doesn't have as much of an impact nowadays, but at the time, it was horrifying for a kid gamer. It's at 3:14 in this clip

I don't know how you forgot Ross from RDR. Although a duel wasn't much of a boss fight I sure enjoyed popping lead in that guy.

I gotta agree with Ganon and Big might poo lol

Also I wouldn't call anything in RDR a boss.

The Tower Knight the second boss in Demon's Souls... To say he's intimidating is an understatement.
Huge and tough knowing he's next on my challenges makes it hard for me to put the game in again lol.
The End is a good one too.
Super Saren at the end of ME1
the Skedar queen Perfect Dark
Ares God of War
The Sisters of Fate God Of War 2
Hermes God of War 3.
Oh hell all of the GoW bosses are awesome.

Sun Li the Glorious Strategist - Jade Empire (Still one of the single best one-on-one duels I've ever fought in a game)
Darth Malak - KOTOR (After the 'Oh ****!' reveal I couldn't wait to lay the smackdown on old metal-bib)
Darth Traya - KOTOR 2 (She plain ticked me off for most of the game, but I trusted her dammit! By the time you get to Trayus Academy even old zipper-head is nothing but a speed bump)
Dagoth Ur - Morrowind (The battle itself was sort of meh, but the lore and story leading up to it stay with you)
Dr. Breen - Half Life 2 (Just the idea of ramming my gravity gun up the good doctor's *** was enough to get me through City 17)
