was planing on doing a 29 Bard/Fighter 1 i read about in a guide, but wanted others opinions, are pure bards good or is it better to go up to a certain point with the bard, then multiclass it

Yes, they are good. Of course you do get a somewhat stronger character by multiclassing a bit. But that's true for all classes.

Bards are cool rock! I'm not sure that 29 levels are really worth it though. You only need 15 Bard for Song of Heroism (And Chorus, though it is an Epic Feat), 16 for the best debuffs from Curse Song, 18 for Legionnaire's March, and 21 for Song of Requiem and Hymn of Requiem.
The most pure build I'd go for is Bard 26/Fighter 4, that gives you Inspire Courage +5, Medium Armor Proficiency (with Battle Caster you can wear Mithral Full Plate without risking ASF) Weapon Specialization, and enough Bard Levels to pick up all the Epic Bard stuff (keep in mind that you need 30 Perform for Hymn of Requiem).
But seriously, Bards rock.
