Those who said Vanguard are just crazy. It's the most difficult class in the game by far. They've got no mid-long range weapons (at least until you pick up the Locust if you've Kasumi, or you receive sniper/assault rifle training at the Collector vessel), and Charge is suicidal if you don't know how to use it. I've just jumped from a Insanity Soldier playthough to a Vanguard one and I'm getting my ass kicked more times that I'd like (sadly, I got too used to the Soldier...).

Soldier is the easiest class by far. If you've the Firepower Pack DLC, grab the Mattock, learn how to use it's semi-automatic fire, maximize Adrenaline Rush as soon as possible, and always aim for the head. That alone makes you unstoppable, and when you get the Widow, you'll have more firepower than you'll ever use.

Hell, I even reached the last wave of the Object Rho (in Insanity) without even trying (sadly I died before taking out the mechs), and that in my first Arrival playthough (I'll do again that part later and aim for the "Last Stand" achievement, or whatever is called).

Agree about Vanguard. IMHO its the most exciting class, but also the most difficult to get the hang of - so no the best for a first playthru.

The main reason I wouldn't recommend Soldier is that as an all weapon class you don't get to use any powers, which is one of the most interesting things about Mass Effect combat over a typical FPS. [And adrenalin rush/ammo powers don't really count here. Also don't say "you can use the powers of your squadmates", because most players won't do that on a first playthru and leave it to the AI.]

I'd personally recommend Infiltrator or Sentinel for a first playthrough.

Adept or Vanguard for an exciting, unusual playthrough.

Soldier or Engineer for a familiar, more workmanlike playthrough.

That's only your opinion. I've had fun with my last Soldier playthough like few times I've ever had before, and that thanks to the Mattock and the Widow (never used both weapons before). Especially the Mattock. I just love that ****ty old rifle :)

First post. ;)

Doing good as a Soldier. I lowered the difficulty from Hardcore to Veteran and it's going smoot.
I got the Firepower pack. I like the Phalanx a lot. It is a mini sniper rifle. I am wondering if the Maddock or Vindicator is better on Squaddies (who have no accuracy issues).
Look up a few posts above (bottom of page 2). I asked a few things on evolving Soldier powers.

Fair enough. I recently completed my Soldier Insanity playthrough, and I definately enjoyed it. It's just that without having your own powers it felt more like an FPS, which to me slightly misses out on the special nature of ME2's combat system.

But then I guess with 6 classes there is something for everyone!

Having said all that a soldier's AR's are certainly powerful, and the Widow + Adrenalin Rush = pretty cool

To be fair, your thread title was a little misleading. You should have titled it Best 3rd playthrough class. Sticking First in inverted commas was unlikely to prevent the misunderstanding.

What is the current debate on which
Adrenaline Rush and class Passive Evolution is better? I think I'll go
Commando on the passive but not sure on the AR.

Heightened Adrenalin Rush.

IIRC Hardened Adrenalin Rush reduces (compared to Heightened) your inflicted damage & time dilation in exchange for 50% less health lost - but note that it doesn't cover shields. You should be capable of protecting yourself from danger when 'Rushing' - so for me Heightened is a no brainer. I don't like trading off offensive power for a safety net. Also, on Insanity, I think that Heightened is almost a necessity.

For passive class I chose Commando. As you can probably tell, I like a high risk, high reward strategy - probably why my favorite class is Vanguard.

For your next playthrough you should try Adept. Its very different to other classes - you can win battles without firing a shot.

^ The difference in offensive power between Heightened and Hardened with normal rapid fire weapons is negligible at best. Heightened does more damage per shot but you fire slower with standard ARs so the end result is basically a push with Heightened using a slight bit less ammo. Hardened doesn't effect shields but when you are taking health damage you take 50% less all at the cost of 20% faster speed ie Hardened does around 50%, Heightened 70%. Does the additional 20% time reduction reduce the damage enough that it offsets the health's 50% less damage, eh don't know. It all comes down to how you like to play and personal preference. Personally I think the hardened spec does better with the Rev, and the heightened with the Widow/mattock and claymore. If some number whiz comes in and proves Heightened is better no matter what, I may still play the different styles simply because it makes them feel different.

This is why I was arguing earlier in the thread that Heightened FEELS too slow for some rapid fire weapons. For my tastes at least. For shotguns you might be able to get two shots with some of them under Hardened AR but only one under Heigthened. In that case Hardened is better.

I have mainly used Heightened so far myself, by the way.

There is a reason why first was in quotations, it is my first playthrough in a while, so I'm basically new to the game again. It isn't misleading.

I got a question, how much is it worth to invest in Cryo Ammo? What weapon should use it best?

Right now I'm level 21, I have:
10 Heightened Adrenaline Rush
0 Concussive Shot
10 Squad Disruptor Ammo
10 Squad Incendiary Ammo
1 Cryo Ammo
10 Commando
1 Flashbang Grenade

I bet I can reach about 25-26 by endgame. So I'll have a few more points.
Also, since I've unlocked almost all powers now, should I look at another power? Perhaps Warp Ammo and move the Incendiary points there?

Oh, one last thing. I'm close to going to the point of no return (only have Zaeed's Loyalty, Overlord, Arrival, and the Reaper IFF missions left to do). So I need to start thinking on my next class. I was thinking of anything but Vanguard, but more inclined to Infiltrator and Adept.

You still have some fun times ahead before the final Boss , :)
from my own experience :
i played sentinel a few times, moving up the difficulty level on each play through ( i had not played any games in years ) .
then i went for soldier on hardcore.
and now i'm doing adept on insanity . Sentinel to soldier was a no brainer transition.
BUT moving to adept has me rethinking my playstyle. But it's a great class. Some missions can be done without you touching your guns practically . But i've never spent so much time figuring how i want to map my powers ( i'm on PC ) as to maximize finger reflex .
So if you want a very different feel of the game, adept is great. I'll certainly do a few games as an adept before moving to vanguard .
As you're on Xbox and you can only map 3 powers, singularity and warp would be the best maybe using the 3rd one for a squad mate's power you'll like using frequently ( overload comes to mind ) .

Played Arrival. Pretty fun DLC. I wonder if Shepard will go to trial (a la Tali) for the events there in Mass Effect 3.

Same here. I'm on a Renegade Infiltrator ME2 playthough right now. Funny thing about it is that when I had to choose a Bonus Power at the beginning of it, I was undecided about which one to choose, and I finally was like "well, I'll choose "Energy Drain" (chose it almost randomly)...I can always change it later if I don't like it". Turns out that I love that power :D Any enemy with Shields (which is pretty much everybody, playing in Insanity as I am) has no chances against me. Add to that Incinerate against Armor and Health, and my Shepard is easily one of the most versatile I've ever had (he only can't beat Barriers by himself, but Warp and (soon) Warp Ammo will take care of them).

Besides, I always have my companions carry Squad X Ammo, so that leaves me space to maximize my own non-ammo powers.
