Seriously, why the hell are Bioware character never, ever, ever allowed to be f***ing happy?!

The PC in this case gets it especially bad. They always get the short end of the stick, everyone treats them like dirt, the world cares nothing about them or the fact that they're busting their spines to save it, and everyone and everything royally F's them over. Even people who claim to love them. Go figure. (except Zevran, he's le awesome. Everyone else? The empty headed bard runs off to join the goddamn chantry secret service, the treacherous witch runs off with Loghain's bastard kid [not that he really cares], and the whingy little templar either becomes king and also an arrogant imbecilic ****, or if not, runs off to who the hell knows where and is never heard from again, doesn't even send his "true love" or best friend a freaking letter or nothing). blah, blah, blah....

Right up until the endgame, people are spitting in your face at left and right. Even if you're a mighty human and not a filthy horrible slimy inferior elf/dwarf. The nobles, the commoners, every single one of them. everything the PC or other Wardens have selflessly done for them means squat. We're all worthless and homeless.

Thedas sucks and I still say ditching this sack of crap world should have been an option. I want to just drop a few nukes on it and call it a day. Big fiery ball visible from space!

...Shepard got it sooo much better. I think the ME universe is a significantly less rubbish place, in fact it's actually pretty good. It's a place that actually makes sense. If it weren't for the Reapers, everything would be great. The DA universe is just all around crap and even if the Darkspawn weren't around, it would still be extremely crap and the suicide rate would be through the roof. Nothing in it makes sense and it breaks my willing suspension of disbelief.

/rant. Going off to kill more Collectors... kudos to you for making ME, Bioware!

Whoa whoa whoa!  I was okay with this little rant until:

1.  Dwarves.  Will.  Eat.  You.

2. The DA universe, in my opinion, mimics real life (perhaps over-dramatically so) in the way that the true heroes are overlooked until they prove themselves worthy of praise.  The ending cutscenes, whether it be the Warden's funeral or the "We Survived!" celebration, give the PC a chance to look back on everything that happened, everything they've sacrificed and lost as a result of this Blight, and earn some groveling from the nobility.

Secondly, yes, the party members (i.e. Morrigan and Alistair) lead to major disappointment, especially if you romance them, but that is life being mimicked once more.  You must realize that, although a very deep character, Morrigan has been taught from day one that survival and power is everything.  She even reveals this fact to the PC very early in the game.  The opportunity to give birth to an Old God, a clean slate with unimaginable power, she cannot and will not pass up.  If the Warden denies her, she will not risk survival to save a country that she has no love for.  She is self-centered and has her own agenda, as many people in our world are.

Alistair is also a very deep character.  His de facto father was murdered by Teryn Loghain in his eyes and he will not -- can not -- allow this man to live.  If the Warden denies him the opportunity to exact revenge, even if he is in love with her, his view of her is forever changed and he can no longer see himself traveling in her company, supporting her ideas.

The DA universe shows that, with each action, there is consequence.  Not everything ends happily.

The ME universe, in my opinion, has much less depth.  In each game, the humans have won.  Hoorah!  Another threat quelled.  But no real sacrifice is involved.  No real choices must be made.  Sure, in ME1, an ally must be sacrificed, but in ME2, if the ship is upgraded well and common sense is used in party selection, no party member dies regardless of choices made prior to the climax of the game.

But, in reality, you cannot compare the two games.  They're different worlds -- different times -- and different styles.

3. Elves aren't slimy most of the time. ;)

This is a "no spoilers" forum, guys.

Anyway, nobody wants to hear a story where everybody is happy and content and lives in a world where the sun always shines and the wind is always at their back. Conflict is where it's at. That's what keeps us invested in a story and compelled to see it through to the end, because we want to know if this set of impossible circumstances can, against all hope, even have a happy ending. If we got the happy ending right up front, there would be no reason to listen to the rest of the story.

I'm pretty sure Dragon Age is considered a "dark fantasy" RPG. As seen from several of your other posts, perhaps this game just isn't for you?

But this is simply not true, unless you are playing the game in a way that merits that reaction.

Yet another negative topic started by Butterfly Effect. Seriously, move on and play something else. Life is too short to be so upset over a videogame.

Elves are inferior? You haven't met my arcane warrior elf.

Also, dwarves can head-butt you in the crotch if you aren't careful.

The world of dragon age is dark and violent as it was told to us right from the beginning. We as players are allowed to make it change for the better or worse. If you dont like the results, choose differently or deal with it. Its all about choises and consequenses and I like it when there are several ways to solve things. It gives us many ways to roleplay it the way we want.

If you dont like morrigan running away with say Loghains child, kill the man in the landsmeet or allow him to die killing the archdemon. I always kill him because I just cant stand what he did and I dont want him to live and become celebrated as a hero later plus he just makes my blood boil. Killing him I solve that problem.

The party members are different persons with their own interests. Almost anyone of them can abandon you if you´re an ass**** to them. Most of them join you willingly so it would be wise to do something for them in return so you give them more good reasons to stay. Once again its about choices. By being a friend to them, you can change some of them as people or you can give them new thoughts. I for an example like romancing morrigan. Yes she has her own plans for the child and she was taught about survival etc, but if you´re a friend to her or better if she falls in love, she begins to have new thoughts. Her motives for the ritual arent necessarily that simple anymore. Now she also actually WANTS her friend/loved one to live. Its emotional in the end, when after all that "love is a weakness", "power has meaning" and other things, she actually calls the warden her love and says she doesnt regret what she had with him.

Its a great game with great characters and interesting world and hard choises. This is what we knew right from the start. If you dont like it, dont play it. Choices once again, both in real life and in the world of dragon age. Next time when you buy a game, check the facts about it carefully so you wont get disappointed.
