You people must be irresponsible.  Being sexually active doens't mean you'll contract STD's.  Again, must suck to be you.

Have you ever kissed anyone on the mouth, shared a drink from a bottle, used a public restroom, or otherwise  come in contact with the outside world?  Because if you've done any of those things, surprise, you have put yourself at risk of contracting the herpes simplex virus!  :wizard:

Edit: Sorry brain fart.

I now want to make a clap joke but I can't think of a good one. :pinched: But there's only a handful of STDs that one should actually be scared of.

Jeezus, I'm not talking about accidentally getting an STD from something like sharing a drink.  I could get struck by lightning in a thunderstorm tomorrow by walking down the street but that wouldn't be my fault.  Now, it would be my fautl if I stood outside holding a 20 foot metal rod during a thunderstorm is all I'm saying.

@ XKG At least technically, sometimes people are however impulsive, which complicates things. Or 16, drunk and idiots, as the case may sometimes be, and when you are those things, rational thought like "hey, I shouldn't do this, because of the risks of x, y and z" rarely comes into mind.

Edit: forgot quotes.

@Frybread: ...You *do* realize most people with Herpes don't realize it right? And that it's not always obvious?

So you've had experiences with STD's?  Must suck to be you.

Luckily for me, contracting STDs usually requires leaving your house. I probably get as much action as your average incontinent nursing home patient.

Despite my lack of fortune, that doesn't mean I have to be a sex-negative slut shamer who propagates the unwarranted hysteria around STDs. The long and short of it is that STDs are way more common than most people think, and way less of a big deal than most people think -- even less so in a world with literal cure-all magic.

Ooh.  Must have touched a nerve.  Sorry, but not everyone gets STD's.  They are very easy to avoid with a little common sense and honesty.

^^^^^^ Guys can carry HPV and never have one symptom. But every girl he sleeps with will contract HPV and have symptoms.

Posted Image

Makes the responsible person who gets treated all the more reasonable, really.

STDs are not as easily avoided as you think, or else no one would ever contract them.

Sometimes condoms fail. Sometimes you put your trust in someone who doesn't know they are infected, or deliberately lies about being infected because they're malicious or scared. There is no way to be 100% safe from infection, though you can mitigate your chances of contracting something by being responsible, using protection, getting yourself tested regularly, and having any infections you do contract quickly and immediately treated. And Isabela is directly shown doing that. There is no reason to shame her.

You can rationalize it any way you like, but it sounds like you and the others are irresponsible people who must see themselves in Isabela.  Sorry about my life?  heh  You must not know who your partners are, have sex with people who lie or put yourself in risky situations.

I knew you wouldn't disappoint!

1. Your comment was moronic because in no place did igpd say they had contracted STD, and yet you jumped to the conclusion. Talking about it doesn't make you catch it, you know.

2. Speaking only for myself, I'm as far as Isabela as you can imagine. Known only the same s.o. for 17 years now. And yet...

3. Some of us are old enough to have been sexually active before AIDS and the whole condom campaign. Before any valid info was available.

4. Some STDs are either chronic or fatal, and dismissing this with "must suck to be you" is beyond bad taste.

But do continue generalizing and judging people you absolutely know nothing about from your high moral point of view.

Didn't you read one of my earlier posts?  Sure, a person can contract an STD by accident (herpes is a good example), but there are ways to vastly lower your risk of even getting them in the first place, and ways to increase your risk.  I would put Isabela in the reckless category, which is what this was all about in the first place.  I have no sympathy for people who are reckless and unneccessarily increase their risks of getting STD's and spreading them.

Did you read mine? Isabela is directly shown within the game having an infection treated. She is not spreading any infections, because she has the infections she does contract treated.

If Hawke, Bethany or Anders can "heal" people back instantaneously from the brink of death, it's easy to imagine that STDs SHOULD be no big deal. Since magic is mostly forbidden to the general population I imagine that there quite a few infected people walking around.

I think the easy access to mages' healing magic is a major reason why Isabela stays with Hawke for so long.

As for the question of the thread itself, I'll simply state that this is a role playing game, and that every LI can have his/her perfect Hawke if the player choose, or the player just picks a favorite. We've all seen enough back and forth to know that not everyone's opinion is the same.

Re STDs:

I was dating this woman years ago, who only told me, after we had been intimate, but before we had sex, that she had HPV. This really pissed be off, as although it has no negative effect to men at all, it eventually causes cervical cancer in women, meaning I couldn't have sex (even protected) with anyone else ever again without putting them at risk.

I nearly broke up with the woman, but I got over my anger. Eventually we got married and had a child, so it's not an issue now. Oh, and for the record, she hadn't had sex with anyone several years before we got together, and was in a six-year relationship before that. She also never had sex without a condom until she went on the pill. She probably contracted it in high-school or college from one of her boyfriends.

So yeah, you don't need to be a **** to get an STD. And something like 50% of women have HPV, and you can get it and spread it even with a condom (it just requires genital-to-genital skin contact), so if you get laid, chances are pretty good you're a carrier.

Reckless? Why? Because she got an STD once? You don't know enough about her sexual habits to know whether she is reckless or not, except that she has a lot of sex.

Ah. So it's just good old sl*t-shaming then, and not actual concern for diseases that motivates you. Good to know.

What about Isabela makes you think that she would deliberately hold off having an infection treated and willfully expose her sexual partners to infection? Do you seriously believe sexually promiscuous women are all evil and malicious like this?

Here's my attempt to get back on topic.

Isabela's behavior suggested that she wanted people to think she was a harlot to distance herself from them; to avoid intimacy. It didn't seem to me like she actually had peanut butter legs in practice.
