So someone posted this on the "Hilarious Pictures Thread"...

... and the genereal reaction was obviously that the DA2 style one looks ugly (which it does).

First I should say that I like the new elf design in DA2 better than in Origins, mainly because they look like a distinct race now.
I don't however believe that elfs in 2 look better, like most I think that visually they are less attractive than in Origins. But that is only because they look less human. Again, this is where you bring in the quote about the "pretty humans with pointy ears."

But isn't it strange to complain that you can't play as an elf or dwarf, and at the same time argue that the new elfs look ugly, because they don't look human? So we basically can play any fantasy race, as long as they look human enough.

Would those who don't like the new design of the elfs still play as a elf or qunari, if the option was available? Sure it would be interesting, but would it be your main playthrough? There were some statistics from Origins which showed that most players choose humans, second the (human looking) elfs and then only then dwarfes (or dwarves). Is there a point in brinnging multiple origins back with the new art style?

Who wants to see Dragon Age in live action? You have so much more freedom with animation, you aren't limited to a persons' looks and the special effects won't look cheesy.

DA2 style elves look awesome, plus they are now CANON!

I must admit there are a little weird with big heads small bodies.. But they could of been much worse ofc. Its good that  they dont look human otherwise everyone would look the same and that would be boring :<

Well, the accents are worse than the looks for me.

If the DA2 elf accents annoy you watch Snatch, the new accents remind me heavily of the Pikeys from Snatch.

I don't think they look ugly because they don't look human. I just don't find them visually attractive, and elves were defined a few times in Origins as being perceived as beautiful by humans, not beautiful by virtue of looking like humans.

DA2 blew it when it came to elves. Honestly I'd like to have a talk with some of their so called art designers.

Elves can look beautiful to humans and at the same time look like a different race. They took a shortcut in DAO and just made them like small humans with pointed ears, but the direction in DA2 doesn't even follow the elf lore (not that many things did in DA2).

HEY ART DESIGNERS! How hard would it be to just google ELF images and get some decent idea's. Seriously.

It's just, for me, elves have been known to have the distinct ears and nothing else besides being beautiful.
In DA2, elves are now defined as having pointed ears AND a high nose bridge to that of a lion's.

To me, changing the traditional elves is like making a whole new vampire race by making them all shiny and glitter-like. :pinched:

Well in DA2 style, she certainly looks a lot more not human, but she also reminds me of a goldfish... And if elves are considered beautiful by humans, I dont think they should look like goldfish

They are horrible. They completely messed up things here ._.
They tried to make something more unique, original. But I'm afraid that they failed.

It's not only that they look less human. Hell, Turians and Batarians are completely in-human but they look awesome. The problem with new elves is that they are just plain "ugly" elves. I'm sure that someone versed on design could give some deep reasoning behind this, but for me, the fact that there are so many people complaining about it gives cogency to my statement.

I sincerely hope that this design stops being considered canon.

And this is kinda my thoughts as well.  How could anyone at BioWare, let alone the dozen people who would have had to approve the design, have thought this was good?  Granted this is the same group that thought reusing maps was a great idea, that waves of enemies falling from the sky was a great idea, that ... ugh, never mind I could go on forever.  Maybe it's not so surprising after all.

Me either. I watched The Guild, and I think there were times that she was cute/pretty, but the rest of the time...meh.

Now see, that's the problem and solution to DA2 elves both, right here.

They lack glitter.

The basic features aren't inherently bad - Orsino, Fenris and Merrill all look OK.  It's just they're really skinny and the  minor NPCs are bad.

There's a mod out there which allows you to create a DA:O elf with most of the distinctive DA2 features, and you can make a pretty decent looking PC with that. Though it benefits from not being as crazily skinny as DA2 elves.

I agree with you about that.
The rest of the elves in DA2 look like donkeys.

Blasphemy! The two of you are very obviously BLOOD MAGES.

As for the elves... I like their new appearance, sort of. They look distinguished. But the way they made their facial features, they have to be rather careful in design in order to create elves that are attractive. Merrill and Fenris were attractive in their own right, but for a whole lot of elves I can't really say the same. Some look outright creepy.

Also, I'm bothered by their proportions. Their shoulders are too narrow - it makes them look more childlike in my eyes rather than graceful, especially the women. Merrill escapes that problem by having pauldrons that make them look wider.

I was going to say, DA:O elves were canon, look how long that lasted...
It's like they went for the anime elf look, like Deedlit from Lodoss War:

you can get away with that in animation since everything is hyper stylised, render it in 3D and suddenly

the horror!

I'll say it again though, I can get used to the nose thing, scale back the eyes and ears a bit and that'll be fine, the thing I can't get past with the DA2 elves is the bodies especialy for women, they're far too stretched and seem to have girrafe necks
and no shoulders to speak of. It makes their heads look way too far out of proportion.

there's nothing wrong with having a long neck. I have a long neck and a very odd and slender body frame.

Me too.  Casavir and Bishop could both go join the Shadow King for all I cared.  I wanted a Sand romance.

I think a select few DA2 elves looked cool and even attractive, but the majority were odd looking at best, hideously ugly at worst.

It could have been worse though, for DA2 elves.  They could have been female dwarves, and been mercilessly slaughtered to the last (that is the excuse for the lack of female dwarves I have decided on, and will believe that until it is proven otherwise).

I mostly played elves in Origins, but don't want to play an elf with the new design.  Dwarf, maybe- we haven't seen any females in the new art style so I can't say.

Oh, sorry, In my stupid rambling I didn't answer the main question lol ^_^u

Yes, even in my main playthrough. They look terrible, but I grow fond of elves background on DA universe.
