This one particular Elf - yeah she is indeed real beauty.

God forbid a non human race actually look non human rather than like a perfect specimen of humanity.

I wonder if the people that designed the elves in DA2 were drunk or something or maybe the elves in da2 were beaten with an ugly stick when they were babies.

They are not but they do look like humans. Elves in thedas are pretty human with pointy ears. And they are beautiful to people. At least that how it was before lore was AGAIN butchered.

I don't want them to look EXACTLY like humans - i want them to be "pretty" - they are supposed to be like that. Instead they are now ugly caricatures.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Personally, I love the way the elves in DA2 look. Yeah, they aren't the most attractive bunch, especially a few that are borderline High Octane Nightmare Fuel. But at least they look, y'know, non-human, as opposed to DA2 elves, which just looked like short human with cosmetically altered ears. :P

I love DA2 elves so much, I'd actually rather play with a supremely glitchy DA2 Elf!Hawke mod then the vanilla Hawke. I want the elves to stay the same. I want to be able to play one in the next game.
Jus because we as humans don't find them aesthetically pleasing doesn't mean we can't enjoy playing them. Beauty's more then skin deep, looks aren't important, all that jazz.

This. There are good elf designs out there that don't look human, and the DA2 elf design is not one of them.

It doesn't seem that looking non-human was ever a requirement when it came to the elves, though. Given the elves tend to be essentially defined as humans, but better.

I played as a Dalish Warden. Probably one of my favorite video game characters. But thanks to the elf redesign I am now dreading seeing him again. Hopefully they will either change elves to a halfway point between DAO and DAII looks in DAIII or they let us redesign our elven wardens (If we see them again).

I'd play as a new elf, yes. But I don't have much of a problem with the redesign. I think I'd rather they look beautiful to other elves first and foremost, and not be anything exceptional except in a sort of peculiar way for humans. Why subvert the whole glorious master race elf stereotype but leave in the part about them all being irresistibly beautiful? Granted, some of the new elves are pretty hideous, which could be rectified without any objection from me...

I'm not so sure about the conclusion drawn from those statistics. There are plenty of games across genres with non-human protagonists that sell just fine. I don't think there's some kind of "empathic barrier" preventing people from playing non-human protagonists (or I question how significant it is). Do people prefer human protagonists if they have advanced customization options? I guess so, according to BioWare's stats. But there could be a lot of reasons for that. And that doesn't make those other options worthless.

Though I think if being able to play a giant with horns were an option, a lot of people would choose that one. Even if human would still probably be most picked. BioWare's stats only cover the way Origins had it where the only options were human, elf, and dwarf. Elf and dwarf both being smaller and less imposing them humans.

I love threads like these, they always bring a good laugh. Especially the "comparison" pictures.

Art design is not lore, and elves such as Merril and Fenris are pretty, there's just a wide range of looks as there should be.

I have to concur with this. Beauty is subjective. And one of the great things about DA:O and DA2 was the ability to tweak the appearance of your PC - to adjust the eyes, ears, nose, flesh tone, etc. You could make the character as "ugly" or as "beautiful" (or as beautifully ugly) as you wanted to.

I think the DA2 elves are perfectly fine. Their body types are more in line with how I imagined elves to be - slight, of some ethereal or otherworldly vein. And they have amazing eyes.

So yes, I would play one. And yes, I would be fine with continuing this design.

the new elf design actually keeps more in line with the shriek design. And also, the people who say the elves look like Na'vi because of their ears need to look at where the shrieks ears are. That's more Na'vi than the elves, who aren't Na'vi-esque in my opinion.

Taken from my Darkspawn thread which also serves as a thread to talk about the new designs.

Beauty is indeed subjective. Saying one design is definitely inferior to the other is sheer folly. I find other elves to be good looking. Like Zevran and Orana. Scandalous I know, but I like them.

Other elves however, look horrendous. Huon and Nyssa are some of the bad elves. Nyssa wouldn't have been so bad if she was balding in her late 20s

Now, to be fair, Huon had that crazy look - that "I hear the dark things whispering to me and now my eyes are turning red" sort of crazy. The crazy can sometimes take away from the beauty (though I'm sure there are people who find that incredibly sexy).

And Nyssa was probably losing hair from the stress of life with Huon. Poor girl.

Beauty is largely subjective, but not completely subjective as some of you claim.   You do have things like 'the Golden ratio" that can be empirically verified when it comes to studying standards of aesthetics.

Thanks for posting those images, The Ethereal Writer Redux. You've posted some very attractive elves.

As a whole, I prefer the look of DA2 elves to DA:O elves. Sure, not all of them will win beauty pagents, but there's nothing wrong with that. Even with Orana, she suffers from poor make-up selection more than outright ugliness.

The poor girl could stand to eat more. She makes even Anders look apple-cheeked in comparison. I just wanted to give her a piece of cake and pet rabbit and a hug every time I looked at her. :crying:

I think Huon's main problem was his choice of sporting a mohawk, just like Danyla's daughter. His face I think was decent, though I'm operating off of memory regarding his face.

I do feel bad for Nyssa. I'm still fuming over Hawke going "Would you like me to keep you safe?"

Five minutes later.

"Oh Huon's gonna kill Nyssa. That's cool."

That was actually what I said regarding Orana. She suffers from Tarohne clown makeup syndrome.

I'll agree that there are good looking elves in DAII.

Im just concerned that my Dalish Warden (if we see the Warden again) will look hideous.

If the Warden appears sans a full helm, I'd hope Bioware would bring back the Character customization appearance tweaking things and have it keep in line with DA2's racial designs.

I'm curious to see what Damaeus Cousland, Anessen Mahariel, and most importantly Xanthos Aeducan would look like.

Pretty obvious I thought, you say they're breaking the lore I'm saying they're not.

Wow. Ok your reasoning is a little ... ok nvm.
I'll explain it to you like i would to a little kid.

Human anatomy book. Read it first. <<<<< lets say this is Lore/Codex
Now look at this Pablo Picasso Painting    <<<<<<<  This is Art Direction.

Posted Image

This art direction(painting) and the lore/codex(description of human body from anatomy book) , Do they match ? NO
He broke the definition of human body shape.

Yeah. If you still can't get it then it is beyond my ability to explain it to you.
All my patience for you is already gone so i better stop here.

You say you're spelling it out but then you don't explain what the actual lore in the DA series is?

*thumbs up*

Good post. And if elves are considered by lore to be percieved as generally "beautiful" to humans, then elves likely should look rather human-like in proportions. The key, to me, would be to make them look unique but still attractive. I like the concept of giving them an interesting appearance but I felt they looked a little bizarre in DA 2, and not in an aestheticly good way.
