God, don't juxtapose those two images EVER again, the DA2 elf looks horrific.
There are elves in da2 that make her look pretty.....

It doesn't seem that looking non-human was ever a requirement when it came to the elves, though. Given the elves tend to be essentially defined as humans, but better.Deliciously-Demonic wrote...
But at least they look, y'know, non-human, as opposed to DA2 elves, which just looked like short human with cosmetically altered ears.

What lore? Normal fantasy tropes? So what? The DA series doesn't have to follow that. Its not breaking anything by not following normal tropes. Is the Harry Potter series poor because elves are more like goblins in it?ReiSilver wrote...
Since when were elves supposed to look extremely different. Humans, in lore, are meant to find elves beautiful.

Or you know, people can like it without loving anime or WoW. I like the new design and I don't care for either anime or WoW.
You know what would be awesome? If the DA2 style elves were CANNON'D. Preferably into a brick wall.Chiramu wrote...
DA2 style elves look awesome, plus they are now CANON!
Quotes then please. I can't find a codex entry saying it. If its mentioned in game then its a characters opinion and therefore hardly lore.FieryDove wrote...

It was mentioned in several places in dao and not the least the codex.

Codex entries are written by the characters as well. Which makes them character opinions, and by your definition leaves DA without lore to speak of whatsoever.Morroian wrote...

You know, BW has spent time, money and resources on these purely cosmetic changes. Judging just by that i'd say they strongly disagree with the view that visuals and the design have no bearing on the quality of the game. Or they really like wasting money, time and resources on things that don't matter. You guys criticising DA2 say you don't mind change despite what BW are saying, yet jump on purely cosmetic changes like this which have absolutely no bearing on the quality of the game.

Beauty is largely subjective, but not completely subjective as some of you claim. You do have things like 'the Golden ratio" that can be empirically verified when it comes to studying standards of aesthetics.

Good post. And if elves are considered by lore to be percieved as generally "beautiful" to humans, then elves likely should look rather human-like in proportions. The key, to me, would be to make them look unique but still attractive. I like the concept of giving them an interesting appearance but I felt they looked a little bizarre in DA 2, and not in an aestheticly good way.
I looked at the codex entries on elves for DA:O and didn't see any reference. It's possible that a character may have spoken of the beauty of the elves. But in DA2, elves are referred to by many as "knive ears," which is a slur, and seems to be directed at their appearance.FieryDove wrote...

You are serious? Go load up the game.
If you don't consider in-game characters, scholars and historains opinions valid, then there is no lore...for any game.
To the topic at hand, no I would not want to play an elf...anymore.
I'm curious if, in this study, the picture held up to the baby was similar in appearance to his/her mother, or someone else who had already made a visual imprint. Perhaps we are drawn to certain things at an early age, but our concept of beauty, of what it entails, is just as much shaped by our upbringing, societal norms, and our own ability to shape our identities. Our tastes change as we age. I may have thought blondes were attractive when I was younger, and now, maybe I don't find them attractive at all (not necessarily true, but used for an example - no offense to any flaxen-haired folks).Nightdragon8 wrote...
Accuatly there was a study not that long ago, and we are hardwired to look at "pretty" things, here was the experiment I don't know 100% of the details and I don't wish to wade though google to find it just yet
But here is the "short" version of it.
They held up 2 pictures of women, in front of a baby. Sometimes it was the mother other times it wasn't. but what tey found was that babies tended to look at the "prettier" woman and not there mothers.
So from a very earily age we are drawn to "beauty"

Personally, I love the way the elves in DA2 look. Yeah, they aren't the most attractive bunch, especially a few that are borderline High Octane Nightmare Fuel. But at least they look, y'know, non-human, as opposed to DA2 elves, which just looked like short human with cosmetically altered ears.
