Elves in Thedas are supposed to be ugly, and imperfect. This isn't LoTR or any anime.
Oh, that's why elves were all designed to be hideous in DA:O. Oh wait, they weren't. I think it's a lot more likely they just had a concept in mind for DA2 elves and fell short of realizing that concept.
(Incidentally, it looks like the elvish woman in this picture isn't the only one suffering from a little bit of the ol' giraffe neck. None of them are quite as bad as what's in-game, though, which is why I think they probably ballsed up the execution a bit.)
Wow... to be honest I've never looked at the concept art this thoroughly. Now time to nitpick about the concept art:
-They should have made the Qunari's skin darker like in the concept art
-Just realized this..what happened to the dwarf females?
-Talking about females...Umm what happened to the qunari females?
-Finally the elven concept art actually looks respectable, they should have kept this design instead of that of a donkeys behind...just saying.

You keep saying lore is being changed when its not, at least not dragon age lore. Dialogue from a character ingame is not lore.
Repeat this at least a million times. No, don't...still won't change what is.
Now on about lore IF they keep changing the elves to look non-human even moreso they will AGAIN have to change lore that elves + humans always = human children. Maybe they won't be able to produce offspring at all. Just a thought.

Good point. If the elves are supposed to be considered to be attractive by humans, I'm not really sure where the idea of making them look like something from a H.P Lovecraft story came from.
But then, the Darkspawn got changed into the putties from Power Rangers and the Qunari got turned into clones of Hellboy, so I guess logic was never a factor in their design. I'm just glad the dwarves weren't changed into dinosaurs or something.

From what Mary Kirby (iirc) said given the shortage of time/resources they had to decide whether to improve appearance of human females or add the qunari, and chose the former. I'd guess the lack of female dwarves is also due to that lack of time/resources, seeing how few creatures they managed to port from DAO in general.bduff4545 wrote...

Let's just face it, the whole game feels like a HUGE step back.

Those new elf-goblins are disgusting looking.
I think it sums up the difference between DA:O and DA2 in design terms...
Some things in DA:O were mediocre... some standard fantasy stuff that could have been better but as it was standard it wasn't bad.
They have taken those things in DA2 and made them sub standard

I do not like the new elves its true, when lore is changed just for the sake of change its sort of annoying, but its not anything new. See ME2.
Sorry Morroian, but expecting to be taken seriously when splitting hairs to this degree is simply not going to happen. I don't know how you've managed to convince yourself that 'lore' in games relates purely to things that are written down, but it's not a position that either makes sense nor does it gel with what we actually see in game. I mean, even the codex entry on Aravels makes it pretty clear about how elves are generally seen. Ignorance isn't really a legitimate reason for debate.

I guess that's what happens when trying to make a worthwhile game on a ridiculously constrained timescale. I thought the whole point behind making every Cave in the free marches the same was to save development for other areas....
So which other areas actually got the development in the end?

The elves in DA2 are just far too skinny, unhealthy stick thin, and dont look attractive at all.

Dwarf redesign was saved for DA3 when they get rock and crystalline skins. They'll glitter in the sunlight.

That being the problem - they were notjhinhg but humans with pointy ears. God, it is like all you people are wedded to etherally beautiful elves. Get over it. They aren't humans and they don't look like humans. I'm glad that we walked away from as design decision that said:
Elves: short humans with pointy ears
Dwares: Shorter humans and beards
Qunari: Taller doughy humans.
DA2 the various humanoid races at least look like they're different.
I'd love to play DA3 as an elf with a game tailored to the unique reactions the world would have to an elven protagonist as opposed to two "hey knife ears" lines in DAO.

Once again, it's not that the DA2 elves are poorly designed because they're nonhuman, they're poorly designed because they weren't what the designers were going for. Look at the concept art - it's pretty clear that DA2 for whatever reason failed to execute that concept.

Really?
First, is concept art a ideal that is always met or even meant to be met? Concept art is just that, a concept so I'm not sure I'd say they did or didn't hit that as a point of good or bad. I don't think the Dwarven physique is quite as exaggered as in the concept art, are the dwarves a failure? In the end if they'd made elves all Tolkein-esque I doubt there'd be a thread bemoaning how they missed the concept art.
Second, they did. The two biggest changes were the more promient brow/bridge line and that is in the art (albeit clearer on the fame) and actual prominent ears as oppoised to the hidden under the ears DAO format. I think the thing that the concept art doesn't show that is in the game is the larger eye size.
