I have never played a character (after 30+ played) that ever used Medium Armor, Small Shields or Axes.

So, I decided to try one out.  The problem is I'm looking at a lightly armored tank that can't do much damage.  In other words, not really good a being anything.

So starting with a Human using Sword (axe) and Shield skills I think I would be increasing STR and DEX.  This basically lets me wear the best Medium Armor and gives me good 'To Hit' skills and 'Dodging' skills.  But I'm still, basically a weak tank.

Is there anyway to build a character with these restrictions that will work effectively?  I'm thinking of someone like Sigrum

Using medium armor and a small shield is definitely not an optimal SnS warrior tank build. If you want to play that type of character, you'll probably have to make Alistair your tank.

As a side note: I fell in love with Sigrun on my Awakening playthrough and she inspired me to play my first Casteless dwarf. I made her a dual axe wielding warrior. I'm having a lot of fun with her so far.

Any character wearing anything under heavy armor should never be considered an armor or hitpoint tank in my opinion.

I used Medium armor on my DW warrior (just enough str for medium and the rest poured into dex, worked pretty well and Wade's dragon scale medium armor lasted me all through awakening). So far it's the only thing I can get to work with medium armor, so if using medium armor...get a bow or go dual weild.

Well I can say you probably are not going to be able to tank, but you can be a lightly armored DPS instead.
Axes have the potential to do some of the highest damage in the game.
So heres some gear to watch or aim for.

-Axe-
The Veshialle (Best Axe in Origins and Awakening)

-Armor-
Ancient Elven Armor
Wades Superior Dragonskin (I suggest this one)

-Buckler-
Gorim's Shield
Mythal's Blessing
Warden Recruit Shield

Stats, you probaly wanna focus on more Str then anything else. 26 dex will cover you for all shield talents and everything else into Str will add dmg and attack.

Spec, Your not a tank, your also not a prime damage dealer. But what you can do is stuns, knockbacks, and knockdowns. Focus on this.  Champion/Templar will give you Warcry and Holy Smite. Two very good aoe abilities for knockback/knockdown. Combined with your own S&S Style and possibly the Power of Blood you should have a great Crowd Control arsenal.

Yeah I've tried tanking doing this and it was a no-go. I like some of these ideas though. Thanks all.

I doubt that medium armor would be the way to go.  Maybe at the very start of the game it would be enough, but after say level 5 or 6 you really need to start using heavy armor.

That said, there are various rings and accessories that will boost armor ratings and other stats.   It might be possible to equip a number of those on the tank and get by with just medium armor.  Some pieces of medium armor have their own built-in bonuses.   It might be do-able.

And that's the real reason I want to do this.  It's hard to believe they put it in the game just so you have something to wear until you get strong enough to wear heavy armor.  When I saw one NPC being fairly effective in it in DAA I felt I had to give it a try.  Same with small shields.  Why use them at all when large shields give better armor protection and there are more to chose from.  Since I've played this game so many times I just wanted to try someone doing something different just for the heck of it.

Still a little debate going on in me about whether to max out STR or DEX.  STR gives me bonuses to damage sure, but I really don't need it super high to wear medium armor.  DEX on the other hand helps with dodging and hitting, both of which I'll always need.  So do I want to dodge more?  Would I rather do more damage per hit or hit more often?  Leveling both equally seems like it would just nerf me altogether.

I'm pretty sure that STR and DEX both raise your hit rate equally. So the real question would be: do you want to do more damage per hit or be harder to hit?

That is correct, Str and Dex boost your Attack score at equal rates.

And really that is the question then, do you want to be hard to hit but do little damage or do lots of damage and be easy to hit?
Remember if you try to tank with this you are going to fail, so why make yourself harder to hit? if you dont intend to be getting hit in the first place?

I guess some of that would depend on who I take with me. As long as I have someone with me who is wearing a heavier armor they will get the most agro from the mobs, but if I have nothing but mages and rogues with me I'll become the primary target and then I better be able to Dodge cause I know my armor won't be that high while only wearing medium.

It will be an interesting play. Thanks for the feedback!

Axes have a 100% damage modifier from strength. If you want to go high dexterity, then I'd go with daggers.

If you're with a bunch of mages, they make excellent tanks as arcane warriors. By the end of Awakening, my arcane warrior warden had around 60 armor and 175 defense, along with the other mage buffs. Soloing with them if fun.

100% Str *1.1 =
Longswords and Maces both only use 1.0 Mods to Str.
You still need alot of Str but eventualy that 1.1 will surpass other damage numbers with a Veshialle.

Arcane Warriors/Spirit Healers with that AoE Heal Aura is nice.

Heavier armor means more fatigue. More fatigue means +% to your stamina cost per ability. I see the way you want to play the build and it's actually great if you use lighter armor. It's definately a more "DPS" style gameplay. But, with S&S abilities, you can create a lot of CC with stuns. You're not going be to the damage output of a 2 Hander (I use medium or light armor on my 2H War for smaller fatigue costs so I can spam activated abilities). It's definately a viable role to run around and keep high priority targets basically Stun Locked with light to medium armor and a smal shield.

Be interesting to try out a S/S warrior in medium armor.

Maybe next game.

Works better if they are DPS spec and not a Tank.

Indeed. You'll notice a steep falloff in regard to survivability if you're trying to tank with DPS gear.

Heavier armor doesn't give as much fatigue if you wear a set with a fatigue reduction boost. Any of the superior sets made by Wade are ideal for this or Cailan's armor. Evon the Great's mail combined with Wade's Superior Dragonscale boots and gloves is a particular nice combo, though that's heavy armor.

Since this topic is about medium armor, I'd go with Wade's Superior Dragonskin armor for the fatigue reduction and stamina regen boost.

Another thing to note however, is a lot of the lighter armors offer great bonuses to DEX that many of the heavier armors do not.
