Or you could be glad that close to two years after the game's release they are still working on it. Your options remain the same, regardless. You can provide the data requested in this thread to help identify the issue so that a full patch can be released faster. You can simply re-start the game when the load times get long. You can roll back to 1.04 (directions are linked in the solutions round-up thread) and use the solutions listed there to resolve your authorization issues. (You can actually set the download manager to save your installers so you wouldn't need to redownload.)

Whatever you choose to do, complaining in a data gathering thread that things aren't being fixed as fast as you would like is fairly counterproductive. Everyone, including the devs, would love to know how to make all the problems go away.

Edited for clarity.

well i would not mind going back to 1.04, but i'll have to re download the full game (27 gbs) from origin ea.store

If you go into the General Settings tab in the EA Origin service, there's a checkbox there that says "Keep game installers after games have been installed." Make sure that box is checked and you won't have to keep re-downloading those files.

As for the load times issue, we're working on and will release a proper, non-beta 1.05 patch once it's ready.

Thanks,
Rob

My feeback on the patch to help track the problem:

I played a new game. Everything was lighting at first, quick load times, by the time I got to lothering I started getting longer and longer load times, also when a conversation ended it would pause at the last person to speak in the cutscene view for 20 seconds before it would switch back to normal view - so it is not just load times that are effected. Also when speaking to a trader opening their inventory slowed down.

Eventually it got so bad I thought I would restart, exited to the main menu - that froze for over a minute, then the main menu came up very very slowly.

At face value it (obviously) looks like a memory leak.

Hope this helps to track it down a bit.

If I can provide any further help on this, please give me a shout.

I am also getting the veeery long load times , above 2 minutes , and not only after loading different areas but also after finishing a conversation. It keeps frozen . To "end" this i press control alt del and then i go back to the game and everything is normal. Till the next conversation or area of course...

It hapenned after the 1.05b for my unathorized DLC.

And my computer specs are very vey perfect .

We hope for a fix... :-)

Vista home premium x32
Intell Q6600 quad 2.40 Ghz
3 GB RAM
Radeon HD 2400 Pro 128MB (I know dosnt meet reqs)

DA:O retail cd

Wardens Keep, Stone Prisoner, Awakening (download)

Tab Toggle mod only (wish they would put that in as game feature)

Here is the thing even with sub vid card never had any issues with crashes or long load times with any patch includeing 1.05b with graphics on med everything unchecked. Only dlc issues with items dissapearing and keep not showing up on map. After 2-3 hours of play would start getting loot and combat lag till I restarted DA:O.

THIS IS WHERE IT GETS INTERESTING!

I got a new vid card today Radeon HD 5770 installed it thinking it would be nice to play game on high graphics for a change. After install, with all graphics settings tried, had long load times after 15-20 min.  Reinstalled the 2400 again no issues with load times at all.

Looking threw this thread and others I've only seen people post with the long load times that have =>512 cards.  Wondering if anyone useing 128/256 cards are haveing this problem?

PS. My brother has the exact same system as I do bought it for him for x-mas a couple years back.  He also plays and has no issues with load times. He was the one that told me about the 1.05b

I ended up HAVING to use the beta 1.05 patch in order to authorize my dlc with my DA:O - Ultimate Edition purchase from the Origin service. However, I did notice hardware or "lag" while playing some of the game yesterday, I should have messed around with it some more but I re-loaded 1.04 to see if it would get rid of the issues I was having.

What I was experiencing was:
1. Long load times between zones, apparently randomly; sometimes I would load a huge zone like Ostagar in a couple seconds, but then I would load a small zone like the bar in Lothering for what seemed like a minute.
2. Delay after dialogue scenes where after it's over and cuts to combat or w/e seems like it would take forever sometimes, like maybe 20 seconds at most sometimes.
3. I noticed a very small graphic error on my PC's neck if you look at it from certain angles from the back of the head you could see a noticeable gap on the right side where the neck meets the head.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head for the moment; I'm going to start writing these "oddities" down so I can post them here later.

I'm sure there's something amiss, coming from the PS3 version of the game, I would think everything would be significantly faster on my computer that well exceeds the recommended specs for the game. Here is a list of my equipment:
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601) Service Pack 1
Processor: AMD Phenom™ II X4 925 Processor (4 CPUs), ~2.8GHz
Memory: 8192MB RAM
DirectX Version: DirectX 11
Video Card: HD Radeon 5870 Eyefinity 6th Edition 256MB
Motherboard: ASUS M4A79XTD EVO

I just find it hard to believe I would have loading / slight visual lag issues (in some areas) with an older game then say DA2 or Crysis, etc.

EDIT 1: Apparently swaping back to 1.04 isn't going to work I tried to run the game and it asked me to use my EA login then it said there was an error and I would need to reinstall the game, so I went back again to 1.05 and I can get into the game again but I found from reinstalling 1.05 (I remember now from the first time I ran it) it gave a message "Dragon Age: Origins - Awakening is not installed, if you reinstall Dragon Age: Origins - Awakening in the future you will need to re-run this update."

EDIT 2: I'm not so sure about problem #1 but definitely for problem #2 the longer I play the game the worse it gets and I have to restart the game every hour or so; any time a dialogue cutscene happens and it ends there is a long delay that just gets longer and longer as time goes on.

*****below is just a little rambling from me if you don't want to keep reading******
Also just for the record I just want to say I love BioWare games, but they seem to be afflicted with "never finishing the polish" disease; what I mean is that they make these wonderful games that are really enjoyable and are one of those "go to" companies I loot forward to for games like Blizzard or Square-Enix (though not so much recently) but after they put it out there and fix some of the bugs they leave it hanging and the community is stuck with little obnoxious bugs and oversights that keep their games from being "perfect".
Thank god DA:O has a dedicated community of players though that create mods to fix bugs with the game that BioWare has neglected though; which is probably the main reason I switched to the PC version of the game to relive it (Though I REALLY wish there was an "R" button like in DA2).

I get long load times as well, but I am not sure the issue is the same as the one described here. Mine seems to be a memory issue. When I start DAO, it will use ~400,000 K memory, according to the Task Manager. Upon loading areas (and only when loading areas), this takes a rapid jump upwards to ~800,000 K, and eventually passing ~1,000,000 K. I have not tried playing much beyond this, as closing the game and restarting it resets the cache. When the memory is above 1,000,000, load screens take upwards of five minutes to load and even closing down the game is a chore. Alt-tabbing out of the game is unaffected, so I have taken to closing down the game via the Task Manager to reset the memory. It is rather annoying, but at least it is -somewhat- playable.

I have one problem with my use of the Patch 1.05 PUBLIC BETA - that fixes authorization issues.

I have the Blood Dragon Armour Mod for Dragon age origins installed, my problem is the Chest piece that is supposed to appear in inventory and the pieces of armour that can be bought from Bodhan do not appear.

If you go to your installed content and disable Blood Dragon Armor. Force load the games it is not properly appearing in and make a new save. Re-enable the content and then re-load the saves you just made. Most of the time this will make the armor appear properly. It may not spawn into your inventory until after Ostagar.

If anyone has 1.05 working without any noticable slowdowns (ie. roughly the same as 1.04 within a few seconds) please let me know, I would like to inquire as to your hardware to help narrow down the issues for those who are having this issue.

I tried 1.05 and as I played the game got worse and worse, the load times just started to increase for everything. It took 30sec-45sec just to go into a Store screen. I talked to Sandal and did some enchantment it took 30 secs for that to come up. It took atleast 5 X as long to change maps.

Running Windows 7 64bit SP1 full patched
8gig of ram
240gig SSD
Ati 5850 in crossfire with another one. Running latest cat drivers 11.7

with 1.04 these issues werent happening. But the DLC issue was there.

On 1.04 i would notice this issue, but it only became significant >1 minute when travelling to or from denerim after about an hour. Denerim itself is fine. After 2-3 hours however, i get progressively large lag inside denerim, until the game eventually freezes.

*hand*

After playing for a longer period (several hours), sometimes the spinny thing will stop rotating and the game will apparently freeze. Prior to this the load times climb progressively higher. In some situations, I have been successful in alt-tabbing out of the game and back in and the game has unfrozen. Other times it simply has crashed.

Can I get a show of hands from those of you for whom the loads are actually freezing (i.e. the spinny icon stops rotating) rather than simply taking a long time. It seemed to spark some ideas for one of our programmers so I'd like to get a sense of whether that's a common occurrence with this issue.

Thanks,
Rob

Hi Rob,
Putting this here because it may be related or relevant. If you think I should start a separate thread or post this under another topic please let me know.

I am running 1.04 and had always experienced somewhat slow load times traveling between locations on the world map and sometime even sub-maps like traveling around Denerim. Occasionally the hourglass would stop for a period and sometimes it would even crash the game. The amount of crashes was insignificant and the slow load times and occasionally stopping for a few seconds, I thought was just normal. I can't really say it took 2 minutes, a minute occasionally, so i didn't worry about it until this started happening.

However... I recently had to get a new video card and now it crashes more often when transitioning areas of the map. Like once out of every 2-3 trips. So often that I've taken to saving the game every time I open the map to go anywhere or even walk into a place that will prompt me to "Gather my party and go forth".

I was running an NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GTS 256 MB
NVIDIA Driver Ver.: 185.85

My video card died.
I bought a new NVidia GeForce GTX 550 Ti w/1GB ram
NVIDIA Driver version:  280.26 If there is a better driver to use for DA & DA II please let me know

I was running my video settings with Graphics Detail - High and Texture Detail - Medium, since upgrading the card I set Graphics Detail - Very High and Texture Detail - High. The game runs and looks great. No glitches in the game so far once I'm in an area. The only problem I'm experiencing so far is transitioning between areas.

Here is the rest of my PC Specs:

@Ghost_Writer: BW staff, including Rob, rarely visit this forum or this thread. A thread of your own would get your problem more attention (though traffic here is pretty slow right now). Given that this game is a little older, and Nvidia has had a host of issues with their most recent drivers, you might want to try rolling back to a slightly older driver as a first step. There are directions in the Solutions Round-Up thread. The 280.xx drivers have had mixed results with both DAO and DA2, the 275.xx drivers are a mess for both games. I am running the 270.61 drivers and have had no problems. Gorath knows a lot about graphics cards, and might be able to offer more help, but he is unlikely to see your post unless you start your own thread.

Recently I had a major virus attack my system. None of the ati virus / Adaware software that I had at the time could find it. (The only thing then not affected was Dragon Age Origins.) I was in contact with Sandra from Spybot Search & Destroy about this issue. So, she sent me a small program to install to find it and to send her back the report. So, I did as she asked. Several days later after I had reformatted the hard drive, Sandra sent me back another email with the following program, ComboFix, she had asked me to install to purge my sysyem; (and, send her back the report thatit generated.)

When I reinstalled all of my software including DAO, I haD to install Origin, as I was previously using EA’s old download manager. (Following the installion of DAO I also installed the 1.05 BETA patch prior to starting
the game.)
Once everything was installed I started the game and  installed all of the DLC’s and what not. Everything appeared to be installed. However, Awakening was not to be found anywhere. So, I came to the forum to seek help. First and foremost, every driver on my system  is current. And, I tried all of the available suggestions. Now, prior to running the ComboFix, When I would  close or exit the game itwould take roughly two to three minutes for it to shut down. Then, when it finally wnt to the desktop I would get an error message about “Internet Explorer failed to shut down properly.”  Once I installed the ComboFix and ran it, while watching the procees I noticed that at the end it had found two stings relating to Microsoft’s .NET 4 Framework; and, purged them. Now, DAO shuts dow with no problem. However it still takes a couple of minute to do so and
Awakening is still missing.

I would attach the  Report from ComboFix, but there is not option to do so. Thank you.

Jallard

PS

Here is the instructions regarding ComboFix:

Save it as test.exe on your desktop. Then close all windows and deactivate all resident protection that you
have active or opened.

Also the resident TeaTimer of Spybot:

Right click on the TeaTimer icon in the system tray and  choose exit.

Now start the combofix.exe, read the informations in the  appearing windows and answer them with yes.

The scan with ComboFix can take a little bit, please be patient. Please do not perform any actions on
your pc during the scan.

Probably your pc is being restarted new.

After giving up on other solutions to get DLC authorized in my Ultimate Edition I reinstalled the game and started it anew with 1.05 beta patch. Looks like it solved DLC authorization problem (but for example Blood Dragon armor still was nowhere to be found on any created character, will have to see later if other DLCs appear in game).

But with this patch I also noticed that after playing game for a bit longer loading times not only increase but also some screen tearing appears (looks like sometimes game is skipping some fps), menus start take longer to load, inventory screen takes several seconds. After quiting the game and reloading the save the problem is fixed.

Actual Clock Times - Please measure the actual load times and do your best to estimate the amount of time you have to play before it occurs. At this point, we're only concerned about load times greater than 60 seconds and occurring after less than 3 hours of play.
It's around 3 hours of playing, sometimes less or more.
Specific Area Transition - Usually closed ones like buildings.

Patch Number - Are you using the Patch 1.05 beta? Are you on 1.04 (available as part of the base Ultimate Edition install)?
1.05 beta
DLC List? - What DLC do you have installed when you experience this?
All DLCs as this is Ultimate edition.
Does the condition persist if... You exit the game and restart? You uninstall your DLC? You revert back to 1.04? You play logged out?
This condition doesn't persist if I restart the game or reload save.
Do you have a particular save game in which the condition is easily or immediately reproducible?
None. This simply sometimes appears.

Clock Times for Slow Downs - Anywhere from 1 hour to 1.5 hours is when the slow downs begin to get noticeable (45 secs to 3 min). After 3 hours *and this is only if my game hasn't crashed by then* the load times get upwards of 5 minutes. Trying to restart the game through the quit option tends to cause freezing at this point, so alt tabbing and closing via Task Manager is a must.

This has been caused just about everywhere, from Orz. to Den and all in between.

Patch is the 1.05 Beta. I have ALL DLC installed. Like some others, I have noticed that my chest piece goes missing on occasion, yet the other items can be found in Bodahn's shop. Very strange.

Restarting the client seems to get rid of the problem. HOWEVER... I have to wonder if maybe the memory leak has to deal with how hyperthreading/multiple cores works with the coding of DA. When I have set the affinity to only 2 of my 4 cores, I get far fewer crashes... but it doesn't seem to help my slow down times.

@Moyira: DAO's issues with more than two cores is well known, if frustrating. It accounts for the vast majority of CTD issues that show up in this forum. For anyone who stumbles upon this, there are directions for setting core affinity linked in the solutions round-up thread. The increasing load times seems to be unrelated as the multi-core issue has been there since release and the load time problem impacts single and dual core systems just as frequently as it does >2 core systems.

I am also having unusually long load time for my PC CD version of Ultimate however the main problem is that there are periodic frame rate crashes where the game baisiclly freezes on a single frame for a few seconds to over 10 minutes. This occured for me after I entered Ostragar so about 2 hours into my total playthrough. I have all the dlc installed and several mods and patch 1.05 beta.

Can I get a show of hands from those of you for whom the loads are actually freezing (i.e. the spinny icon stops rotating) rather than simply taking a long time. It seemed to spark some ideas for one of our programmers so I'd like to get a sense of whether that's a common occurrence with this issue.

Thanks,
Rob

*raises hand!!

Some  times if I repeatedly hit ALT-TAB & managed to get it to drop to the desktop, I could get it to come out of the "no=spin" cycle, but noT always ... also of note, the background music will go in & out while it is frozen ...

I am currently using 1.05 PB with regular original version of Origins & all released DLC for it ... this is my 2nd playthrough & I have just started -- but areas in Lothering are taking over 5 minutes to load (mostly going in & out of the tavern/chantry areas) -- conversations are freezing as well ...

I dont' know if this is related or not, but i'll post it anyway.

I have the ultimate edition with 1.04 patch. it was working fine since the day i got it untill 2 days ago when i decided i wanted to do another playthough. I installed the game and started playing, and it was horrid. It allowed me to play normally for 20 minutes at best, at worst around 5-10 minutes. Then everything from moving around to area loading became very slow, the sound became choppy with static, characters repeated what they said 2 times, . i reinstalled the game 2 times thinking i may have done somthing, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Do you know if there've been any hardware or driver changes (graphics card etc.) on your PC since the last time you played without problems?

Nothing but windows updates.

My graphics card is an "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330" i did just looked in my dragon age config, and it's telling me there is a newer driver available for my display adapter, and my game may perform better if i update my driver. i guess i should give that a try?.

Some of our private beta testers have been reporting increased area load times with the Patch 1.05 BETA and we've also seen some scattered reports of the same from users still on 1.04. If you're encountering long load times under 1.04 or 1.05, please post your information to this thread and help us track this down.

What we need:

  • Actual Clock Times - Please measure the actual load times and do your best to estimate the amount of time you have to play before it occurs. At this point, we're only concerned about load times greater than 60 seconds and occurring after less than 3 hours of play.
  • Specific Area Transition - What area are you coming from and what are you going to?
  • Patch Number - Are you using the Patch 1.05 beta? Are you on 1.04 (available as part of the base Ultimate Edition install)?
  • DLC List? - What DLC do you have installed when you experience this?
  • Does the condition persist if... You exit the game and restart? You uninstall your DLC? You revert back to 1.04? You play logged out?
  • Do you have a particular save game in which the condition is easily or immediately reproducible?
Thanks to all of you for your help,
Rob
