Can you advance 1 specialization further if you don't take a 2nd specialization? In other words, is there any advantage to sticking with a single specialization? Thanks.

No. Picking any specialization give you a passive bonus plus access to talents, you can have both spec and pick talents from either, none or both of them.

To be honest, even if you only are going one specialization, it won't hurt picking up a second one for the one time bonus they provide.

Ok, 4 talents per specialization so it's possible to have 2 specializations and 8 talents? That would take 8 talent points right? And those points could otherwise be spent on other talents? So even if you don't want to invest in the specialized talents, you might as well take 2 specializations for the passive bonus, right? Specialization points don't take away from anything else according to the Wiki.

Seems that that's the idea, yeah.

As far as I have read on wiki and other places, specializations requires a tome/trainer/quest and a specialization point. Spending talent points on the talents and spells the specialization offers is optional.

Also, after unlocking a specialization through a quest, it is unlocked for further playthroughs to get at the beginning.

It's available from level 7, IIRC. You can't take a specialization until then, even if you've unlocked them in earlier playthroughs, but if you have, you won't have to go through the quest/find the item again.
