Game: Dragon Age Origins Ultimate
Format: Steam
Patch:
  • DAOrigins.exe: v1.0.4
  • DAOriginsLauncher.exe: v.1.0.1
  • DAOriginsConfig.exe: v1.0.3
Hardware specs:
  • Intel Core 2 6400 (2.2GHz)
  • 3Gb RAM
  • Radeon 3870, driver 11.6
  • Realtek ALC885 onboard sound
OS: Windows Home Premium 64-bit
Mods: No third-partty monds installed

Issue:
The game seems to crash when my character tries to run into Ostagar.  It causes a black screen during game play and the sound begins to loop.  I get no response when pressing Ctrl Alt Del, so a hard reset is required.

Troubleshooting so far:
I tried to narrow it down to my character made (Dwarf Warrior).  I made a human mage, played through the mage tower, got to Ostagar and... crash.

The first step was to run the file verification tool through Steam.  No issues were found, no files were re-aquired.  I deleted my local content for the game and had steam redownload the entire game (About 25Gb).  The issue persists.

This is my first time owning and playing through the game.  I have not had or played any other copy or version of the game.  It was recently purchased on Steam.

Is this a known issue or have there been any fixes?  I'll try more steps as I think of them.  Thank you all in advance.

Is this a laptop or a desktop computer? Have you tried this with lower graphic settings and resolution?

This is a new one for me, but to take a stab at it--what graphics settings are you using and have you tried updating or rolling back drivers? I know some people had better game stability with the 10 series drivers (10.7 I *think*, but I have had Nvidia cards for years, so I'm not positive.)

 Should have known that the second I started to type a reply, someone else would respond. :P

In all honesty, of all the things I was thinking of trying, graphic settings was not one of them /facepalm

The computer is a desktop computer. The current graphic settings are technically High (set automatically when first running the game), but I will make a few attempts with disabling/enabling AA and lowering quality, etc. Thank you for the tip! I will edit this post if these attempts fail or are successful.

Edit:

Unfortunately, no luck so far.  Here are the changes I made:
  • Disabled fullscreen and lowered my resolution.  Entire screen still went black with looping sound.
  • Disabled Frame-Buffer Effects.  Issue persists.
  • Disabled Virtical Sync.  Issue persists.
  • Disabled Anti-Aliasing.  Issue persists.
  • Lowered Texture Resolution to Low.  Issue persists
  • Lowered Graphics Detail to Low.  Issue persists.
It's very strange that it happens at different points within Ostagar.  I run across the bridge and into the city along the same path, but the crash seems to occurre at different points.  In all cases, it has occurred within 60 seconds.

Your system will definitely have some issues with the high graphics settings. My desktop is slightly better across the board and I get graphical stuttering on high when too much is going on.

I would check the graphics and sound drivers. Also, do you have any anti-malware type software running? (weird as it sounds, shutting mine off fixed a similar issue for me in DA2)

I was very pleased that High settings was giving about 40 fps without stuttering, but it seemed to good to be true lol.

As far as anti-malware, I use the Windows 7 built in firewall with Microsoft Security Essentials. Disabling both did not seem to help at all as I still crashed with the same symptoms.

I'm really stumped because a black screen with looping sound screams hardware issue, yet I play a long list of games without issues and DAOU seems to be my only problem right now.

Did you update the sound drivers with the ones from Realtek? The default ones in Win 7 are...bad and sometimes cause problems.

That is very good to know, let me see what I can find and I'll give it a go. Thank you again.

Have you tried any fixes listed in the DA:O Solutions Roundup?

I was able to locate and install the latest audio drivers from Realtek, but unfortunately the issue has not changed.

Morgora, I read through the list of issues and links, but none seems to match or were not very similar to the issue that I'm experiencing. I do not have any mods installed (not even DLC), just the basic installation from Steam. I'll give it a second look to make sure I didn't miss something.

Two possibilities that I can think of. First, have you tried running the clean start-up utility linked in the Solutions Round up thread? If something is running in the background that is interfering with the game, that should eliminate it.

Second, have you tried verifying your RAM integrity? Very few programs other than games will utilize all of your RAM. It may be that Ostagar is finally trying to load information into higher registers of RAM that are damaged and that is causing the failure.

Edited to add:  If you don't know how to do a memory test, there are a host of free programs out there that will do it for you, but there is a built in utility to Windows Vista.

  • Hit the start button (control-ESC) and type "memory".  The new Vista
start button will automatically present and highlight "Memory
Diagnostics Tool" so you just need to hit ENTER.
  • It will prompt you to reboot now or run the memory test later.
  • On the next reboot, the test will automatically run in normal mode twice.
  • You can use F1 to customize the testing options.
  • Select "Extended" memory test.
  • Tab twice to jump to the repeat settings.  You can set the number of
tests to 0 to have it run indefinitely until you hit the ESC key.
  • Hit the ESC a few times to break out of the testing cycle and boot Vista.
  • Find the error report at
    C:\\Windows-System32\\LogFiles\\MemDiag

Thank you for the tips sami jo!

I seem to be very picky about the way my operating system runs and what programs are running when. One of the things I find myself doing about once a month is going to Start > Run > msconfig > Startup tab > And uncheck any application that does not need to start with Windows. Does the startup utility go more indepth than this? Or is this essentially the same process?

The last time I ran a memory test (about two months ago) I did not receive any errors. Since I just recently bought Dragon Age and, consequently this issue, I'll definitely run the test again just to verify my memory is not acting up.

I often find myself playing games such as World of Warcraft Cataclysm and Everquest 2. Both of these games will use a very large amount, and sometimes all of my ram. I haven't had any performance issues with either of these games yet.

I will post here with the results from the memory test. Thank you again!

Wow and Everquest are both a lot easier on systems than DAO, which may help explain your issues some. If they are using all of your memory, DAO is going to run out. If you load straight to Ostagar, does it still crash there, or is it a function of play time?

The clean-start utility from Microsoft is more thorough than simply turning off applications (which is a good idea to do with a slightly older system anyway). The utility only loads processes absolutely necessary to start and run Windows and nothing else.
