I've gotten to the point where I just met Scar at Baldur's Gate and got his first quest. I'm wondering roughly how many hours of gameplay it takes from this point until the big showdown at the end.

Unfortunately, over the years the story ending has been spoiled for me with BG1 and this is my first time trying to finally complete it. It seems to be dragging on but I think that's just because I know what's going to happen for the most part. At least with the other Infinity engine games I plan to play next I don't know how the stories of them go. I've been tempted to give up on BG1 but not finishing it after so many years of false starts bugs me.

How long it takes depends on whether you've fully explored the wilderness (though of course you could pass if you wanted) and how many of the quests/battles you will do in Baldur's Gate itself. If a lot of the dialog is new to you, then I would estimate 10 hours.

That sounds about right to me, though you could cut it down a bit if you followed a walkthrough and only did the required bits.

If you just head straight into the plot, then you could be done within 3-4 hours after meeting scar (at least, on a first playthrough...if you've done it before, 1 hour would be easily achievable).

There really isn't much left to do that is absolutely mandatory. But Baldur's Gate (the city) provides a truckload of non-critical things to do.

May be non-critical, but number of items, , helm and cloak of balduran, wizard ring, helm of glory, +2 ring and upgraded large shield vs. missile attacks etc. could be quite useful to have before the final confrontation.
