Hello there,

I recently bought a new xbox (old one was the oldest model with 20 gb hdd etc) I played Mass Effect 1 and 2 on this thing, but I'd like to play Mass Effect 3 on my new xbox. The only problem is that I can't seem to find a way to copy my ME2 save to my new xbox. I have tried to copy (and move) the save using an USB stick, but it says I cannot move files between different gamertags. I also can't copy my old gamertag to my new xbox, because it says it is corrupted.... Can anyone help me? Am I doomed to keep my old crappy xbox to play ME3? Thanks!

Several things of note when getting a new 360.

(1) Content license transfer. It's something you will need to do especially if you have any content (usually dlcs) assigned to your account(s). Otherwise you will not be able to access them.

(2) I would suggest keeping your 'old' Gamertag, otherwise you would confuse things for the system as well as yourself. You can recover your Gamertag by following the instructions here. (I would suggest logging onto XBox Live with your 'old' Gamertag on your old 360 first so the system can update any new details before recovering it on a new console to be safe.)

Other things. With regards to ME2 saves you cannot just copy them; there is a copyright protection on them which prevents you from doing that. In order to have them on a new console you will have to move them. Also, saves are made under a specific Gamertag and under normal circumstances they cannot be 'given' to another Gamertag.

That's a starting point anyway. See how far that gets you first. Come back if there are any other problems and I'm sure someone can help.

Oh, and incidentally ME has a hidden save that you cannot transfer I believe; so if you plan to import a ME save into ME2 you will need to replay the final part to have that import file created.

Good luck.

Thanks for your reply.
I can't recover the gamertag because I forgot all the the info (windows live id etc). I made that gamertag back when the xbox 360s first launched, and haven't used any of the information ever since. I have read about the protection that prevents you from moving the saves between gamertags, but I couldn't find a solution to this, that is why I came here for help.

I have played ME 1 and 2 on my old console, I just want my savegame to the new console for ME 3. :) But if I interpret your post correctly, I will not be able to move my ME 2 save to the new console without recovering my old gamertag?

Technically you could move it to the new console, but I anticipate it to be unusable. That is on the assumption that the saves cannot be passed onto another Gamertag of course.

Is there truly no way for you to find out what email and associated data your old Gamertag used? Because while I believe that the dlc situation can be resolved with a willing EA support agent (specifically thinking of EA_AgentX who has been very active of late), I still have my reservations about getting the save games to work for another Gamertag. If someone else knows differently that would be of great help to you of course (and unfortunately I don't know differently).

EDIT: I suppose a get around would involve having your Gamertag on a USB drive, assuming the corruption you mentioned can be resolved or avoided, and your ME2 saves on there as well. Fiddly though.

Your best bet is figuring out your windows live id info so that you can properly recover you Gamertag as OBakaSama suggested.

Step 1)  Figure out your Windows Live ID
Fire up your old Xbox.
Login to your gametag.
Hit the Guide button (The XBox logo) on the controller.
Scroll all the way to the right and under Settings select Account Management.
Scroll to the right and under Your Information select Windows Live ID.
It will tell you your Windows Live ID.
Write that sh*t down.

Step 2a) Reset your Windows Live ID Password
Go here: https://login.live.com/
Enter your window live id e-mail address
Click on Forgot your password?

If that doesn't work, try this: https://security.live.com/acsr.aspx

Hopefully you still have access to that e-mail or remember the answer to your security question.

Failing that, you should be able to transfer your gametag using a USB Drive.

However, it does sound like that is what you're trying and its not working. So, failing THAT, you can get an Xbox 360 transfer cable and just transfer all of your hard drive's contents to the new Xbox.

If all else fails, call XBox support: 1-800-4MY-XBOX

Ho-ho! Janus beat me to the punch about the Windows Live ID stuff on XBox Live; that would have been my next suggestion (you can also change your password there as well by the looks of things).
