Nintendo really screwed up with Samus in the last game (from what I heard). I haven't played the last few Metroid games actually since I gave up on consoles. But I remember a day when Samus was an interesting concept, and those days are long past.

She's still nice written in all the games aside from Other M. Some complained at her talking in Metroid Fusion, but she's still a soldier in that game. It explores some emotional sides of her but (imho) in a great way. She's not a cold hearted killer after all, she's just a tough girl with a heart of gold.

If you ever get the chance to play Zero Mission, Fusion or the Prime trilogy then I greatly recommend all of them. Especially the Prime trilogy (though they don't do much characterisation for Samus ;) great games though!).

Hey, now that I think about
it, they recently almost killed Castlevania too with that terrible
fighting game a couple of years ago. Here's to hoping that they won't
ruin Skyward Sword as well.

Castlevania isn't made by Nintendo, there's plenty of Castlevania games on non-Nintendo platforms. The fighting game you're thinking of wasn't made by Konami either but by a fighting game developer who wanted to try making a party fighter for wii using a popular brand, so they bought a license for Castlevania *shrugs* =) Castlevania, as it is when created by Konami, is still an absolutely great series.

Which game is that? You're not talking about Lords of Shadow are you? There was a Castlevania fighting game?

Castlevania Judgement. A bunch of heroes, heroines, and villains from the various games get sucked through time and battle it out fighting game style. The only good thing about this game was getting yet another "Bloody Tears" remix. :P

Haha, no, though I was disappointed a little in some of the gameplay and the ending of Lords of Shadow, I was referring to Castlevania Judgement. It's a terrible brawler game with the worst plot and murdering of existing character design or personality in any franchise ever.

I don't think Snake really equals generic protagonist. I mean he's tough as nails, but his story is pretty deep.

I wish all video games just made it to where we can make our own character instead of having one already pre-made. I love it when they call you for your job/duty like Warden in Origins or Courier in New Vegas.

As for female protagonists, I've never really liked playing as one. I just don't find any common ground between myself and a female. I would really feel awkward playing as one in Origins or New Vegas.

The female character reveal was icing on the cake after all that. Then "Super Metroid" came along years later by doing everything its predecessor did and fine tuning it to perfection. Easily one of the best games ever made. *Ever*. That is how I try to remember the series. "Other M" is a travesty.

Other what? I heard they stopped making Metroid games after the Prime port for wii. And they never made any movies in the Alien series after Aliens. Or any sequels to the Matrix.

I'ld say so My Friend *tips hat*

Well he has no super powers or what not, aside of in game abilities, which didn't save him at the end. So he should count.

Also I add while technically not a hero, Tommy Vercetti.

^A part of me dies every time I see that bastard. Matt Goldman has single-handedly destroyed any aesthetic potential the DA series might have had.

Frankly I'm finding video games to be too much of a sausage fest anyway, I call for more female protagonists. If there's a character creation system in a game I'll always choose to be a woman, a nice break from the norm.

Yeah I remember talking to a friend playing Fallout New Vegas as I was starting my 2nd game saying how I played as female my first time and he laughs "haha I'm not gay so its weird to play female."  Ummm being gay has nothing to do with it seriously If I was gay wouldn't being the gay be more attractive anyway?  Being a female in a game means I get too look at this chick during my game instead of a dude honestly.

I wouldn't put Cole from Infamoust in this catagory.  he has a personality and he's shown more emotions then rock!

Do you know what this character design needs? More spikes! And asymmetry! Lol I'm so edgy!

And EA didn't do anything to help.

So the only thing keeping one of the best written characters from being a generic male is super powers?
Your logic is not our earth logic.

Samus an interesting character?

She's as bare-bones as any generic male rambo wannabe ever was. In the first few game she never even said a line.

Goddamn, I love John Marston. He's such a good character, better than any bioware character I can think of. BRB playing RDR.

John Marston and Niko Bellic don't count as generic protagonists as they're very well written characters. I wouldn't mind gruff manly characters so long as they have depth.

Out of interest. For the girls on this forum, do you not get sick of playing blokes in games all the time?

And I'm surprised no one has posted this chump yet. Of all the manly character designs out there, it's this one that tries to take a toilet plunger and stuff his manly awesomeness down your throat.

That was part of her appeal. What personality cues Nintendo gave us were conveyed subtly in "Metroid II" and "Super Metroid". The first game admittedly had little in the way of even that, but considering how nonexistent character development was back then I give it a pass. Besides, the gameplay made up for it.

What is irksome about "Other M" is it puts Samus's personality at the forefront, and then turns it into an offensive female stereotype. The fact that she was a sort of Rambo-like badass with a heart, however ancillary that characterization may have been, was swept away.

Keep in mind female characters like this are exceedingly rare. Most tough women in games are psychotic, cruel, or are written with an mentally and emotional emasculating "vulnerability". Losing a longtime character that breaks that pattern is always felt.

It barely matters with male protagonists of this type because they are all over the place. About the only criticism I had of pre-Other M Samus was her zero suit. That was obviously pandering.

Well Roman says he's a good cousin, and be if far from me to disspute the word of the cousin of a crazy Eastern European.

Yes. :P I refuse to play RPGs with fixed male protagonists unless the game has a good hook to draw me in. The last game to manage that was "Alpha Protocol". I find it easier to play guys in games of other genres since I feel less invested in the character. Given a choice, I will always choose female if the option is there. That said, I know several women on BSN who have no problem playing men. A few even prefer it.

Funny enough my Cousin acts just like Roman when he's drunk minus the accent. I've had to keep him from driving off with a transfertruck, and out of the womens bathroom. And just like Roman he's more trouble than he's worth >>
