Samus an interesting character?

She's as bare-bones as any generic male rambo wannabe ever was. In the first few game she never even said a line.

She didn't need dialogue to tell us heaps about her though. Such as when she acts motherly with the baby Metroid in Metroid 2 and kicks all the Space Pirate ass in... every game in the series etc ;) And Fusion didn't ruin that characterisation either, it was all in line.

Out of interest. For the girls on this forum, do you not get sick of playing blokes in games all the time?

I tend to make girls almost exclusively in games that allow me a choice, and that's not because I absolutely can't immerse myself with a male protagonist... answer your question? =)))

About the
only criticism I had of pre-Other M Samus was her zero suit. That was
obviously pandering.

I never saw the problem with the zero suit, myself. It makes sense she'd wear something like that underneath. And in the only game where we played her in that suit, she was incredibly vulnerable while in the zero suit. She can't really fight very well outside of her weaponry after all. Such an awesomely crafted stealth segment in a 2D platformer, really breathtaking. And the nerves were all over the place =) I dunno, I never felt anything bad about it. Was happy they finally finalised how she looked beneath the visor.

Okay, then whatever clothes she had in the original game whether it was called the Zero Suit or not. There was no reason to have Samus run around in a skin tight outfit other than to show off her body in a way that says "woman here! look at me!" That she takes added damage does not make up for it. Samus should have more sense than to stride into a dangerous environment without her armor. Also, she had an alternate skimpy clothing shot in practically every game if you finished it quickly enough. How is that not bad fanservice? :P

And I'm surprised no one has posted this chump yet. Of all the manly character designs out there, it's this one that tries to take a toilet plunger and stuff his manly awesomeness down your throat.

Her running around without her armour in Metroid 1 is certainly fanservice. But is there a single game aside from Metroid 1 that even features that? For the Zero Mission remake, it was removed. Instead they extended the game and put her in the zero suit for a part of the extended content. But was it just for fanservice? Perhaps it was, but at least it never bothered me.

She didn't choose to be without her suit, she's not stupid, she was forced out of her suit. Following we had a stealth section that was a great change of pace until she got her suit back. The game certainly wouldn't have been as good if that section was missing, at least to me. So I don't see how Samus is all fanservicy with lots of playable portions out of her suit. She's been out of suit in two games, once for a stealth part and once (in the very first game) as fanservice. Not that bad, really.

Seeing her without armour when you beat the games though... yeah, you've got a case, definitely x) But I think some credit is due as well in that it's not always better time for less clothing. Often in the later games at least, the most difficult pics to get aren't sexy at all, rather they are badass and cool. And the "sexiest" picture you got was pretty much Samus taking a breather in her apartment. It's not like she was in underwear even then =)

Of course, Brawl screws with all of this, but Brawl was made by a different studio altogether~~

For non-generic video game protagonists, play adventure games. A lot of them feature funny, witty and spunky female heroines... April Ryan, for instance, the best video game character of all time.

Samus is imo an awesome female protagonist because until ruined (hopefully just that one game) by Other M, Samus Aran was 1.) Rogue 2.) Powerful and 3.) Mysterious. We saw her external suit and her face through her visor, which wasn't even that visable in Metroid Prime. I love Samus. Versatile, smart, tough and powerful.

Niko was written in the sense that despite his violent upbringing and admitted sociopathic tendencies, he came off as likable and at times sympathetic. I mean for a mass murdering Serb he could be quite funny, and there was no doubting his devotion to Roman. I'd rank him as one of better game protagonists to come out in recent year, but not the best Rockstar has produced. That honor still goes to John Marston.

Seems unfair to complain about generic marine types when the story calls for them to be marines... What do you want, dainty marines?

That said, we could do with fewer games where you play as some kind of soldier in the first place, but that's a story complaint.

I am of course referring to the shaved headed soldier/space marine. You know the type, white, shaved head/mohawk with 5 o'clock shadow and a chiseled jaw that could break rocks. For example:

Ugh.  The "Doom Guy"-style personality-bereft US Marine In Space protagonist is one of my pet hates in videogames.  It's just dull and unimaginative.  Although it's popular with games studios, I have to wonder if it's as popular with players.  As for me, I'll tend to play a character who's as far away from that as possible; I usually play female characters, though that's not to say that I dislike male characters if they're reasonably well written: Gertrude from The Witcher was interesting and fun to play, and the understated chap from Risen was a nice departure from the chisel-jawed, frowning hero of boringness.

It's bad enough to be a deal-breaker for me.

Yes! For the next Call of Duty game I want to play a flamboyantly gay marine sergeant. 'We've got to save the world from terrorists, but first, brunch!'

Did that happen in Metroid Other M? It's the only Metroid game I haven't played. Since none of the other games have such scene present, I can only assume it's from Other M.

Yes

You can watch the scene if you want.

The "Thief" series has an interesting male protagonist who isn't some macho hardhead. (and the series is fantastic) If you enjoy stealth games I recommend checking them out.

Seriously, I've no interest in the Call of Duty series, but I'd *totally* buy the game just for this.  Hell, I'd probably buy it twice.

I must say, that was unexpected. Especially considering how Other M is supposed to take place between Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion. Samus has encountered Ridley four times before, and never had such a breakdown by witnessing Ridley. That whole scene didn't make any sense at all.
One can't give Nintendo all the blame here though, I believe some of  this is the work of Team Ninja, they shouldn't have been allowed to work on a Metroid game from the start. I suppose they wanted to create an emotional moment(and possibly game as well) here or something similar, but perhaps they should've taken into consideration that Samus has encountered Ridley four times before, and she has never had a breakdown like that in any of those moments. She started to shoot at him instead of just looking at him. So why should it happen now?

If Team Ninja wanted to create such a game, they should've placed it earlier on in the time line. I mean after Super Metroid dealing with Ridley is a daily ordeal for Samus. So yeah that entire scene doesn't make any sense at all.
