Was it ever explained exactly how in the hell Zaeed survived a gunshot wound to the head? Is it because he's just a big goddamn hero?

It's not like people haven't done the same IRL...

Je ne sais pas. The bullet probably ripped through his cheek bone and exited the back of his head so fast that Vido thought he'd been killed.

Luck, it's happened before.
You're not gonna be conscious after getting shot in the face, Zaeed was prabably presumed dead.

Rage is one hell of an anesthetic.

"Rage is a hell of an anesthetic." He spelled it all out for you right there.

Seriously though, it was just a matter of luck. You can survive being shot in the head with no long-term damage if it misses your brain. It's incredibly rare, but possible.

Watch the documentary "The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia" There is a guy who got shot in the head several times, and he looks better than Zaeed...

Maybe what happened to Zaeed is the same kind of thing that happened to Rep. Gabby Giffords. Only 22nd century medical science is much better at repairing that level of damage.

Yep, it's pretty much luck. Look at Phineas Gage - the guy survived an iron rod driven through his skull (unfortunately, the damage to his frontal lobe resulted in a major personality change). http://en.wikipedia....ki/Phineas_Gage

Even if it does blow half your brain out the back of your skull you can still eventually make a full recovery with no adverse side-effects. Your brain can adapt to compensate for the missing bits.

Doesn't anyone watch the news any more? A prominent US politician was shot in the head fairly recently and survived. It can take a while to recover, but consider the fact that medical science in the late 22nd century will probably be more advanced than today, so recovery time might be far quicker. Basically, it's quite possible for Zaeed to have survived.

Isn't Zaeed's eye fake? So the bullet went through his eye, but missed his brain.

I don't think Zaeed had any real medical care ASAP, "shot in the back and left to rot, that's definitely Vidos style" - Zaeed was probably shot, left to rot, waking up after several hours or days and limped to a Hospital to get sown together but by the looks of his scars it was very late.

I thought he was just blind in that eye, not that it was a fake eye

Not only is his eyeball fake but it looks like a good chunk of the upper left part of his head received major corrective surgery. It could be part of his head is cybernetic.

I think the idea is that his eye was damaged.  That can cause color alterations, or the appearance of same.

Having long term damage due to headshots depends heavily on the kind of weapon that shot you and on where you are hit, a few millimeters left or right and you are done for, but it's not impossible to come out of it alive and (more or less) ok...
His survival is most likely a union of this...

Of course even if you survive, it remains to be seen HOW you survive: Zaeed appears to have survived with little to no permanent damage, aside perhaps getting even more insane, but we have no proof of that and besides we love him the way he is... :P

Given this, I'd say the brain damage was probably not present or extremely limited, and this is most likely due to the fact Vido is a lousy shot and can't tell the difference between a corpse and a guy who is just unconcious...

And by lousy shot I mean "can't-hit-the-broad-side-of-a-barn-even-while-pressing-the-gun-against-it" kind of lousy, you have to be seriously bad to miss hitting where it hurts by shooting at point blank against a restrained man...
But then again, there must have been a reason he run the books and left Zaeed to lead the men (and even after Zaeed was "killed" used a Batarian as a proxy commander instead of leading himself)...

Mass Effect projectiles people! They don't penetrate like today's bullets do. Sure, in most cases, the kinetic energy would probably scramble your brains instantly, but there still isn't that larger projectile actually entering your brain and tearing chunks of it out.

Vido should have just stuck with the "Two in the chest, one in the head" Method.

Vido unfortunately only had one more shot in his thermal clip. Damn those thermal clips! If he had a weapon from ME 1, he would of finished Zaeed off for sure.

It never says where in the head he got shot so it's very possible that Zaeed had some goddamn luck and that the bullet just went through without causing to much damage

is a shot to the head really instant-death? I thought depending on the situation, you could die from brain hemmoraghing.

anyways, id like to hear the specifics of that story some day. Maybe when Zaeed's feeling waxing godam nostalgic.

Ever heard of a Finnish war hero called Simo Häyhä?
His nickname was White Death and he holds the world's most sniper kills record (and he was without a scope!).
The guy after the war had some bad luck during a random day, and he was shot in the face. As people said "half his face was missing". However he survived well, and kept living his life untill he died in 2002 at the age of nearly 100.

Talking about goddamn heroes IN REAL LIFE here.

So yeah, it doesn't need too much imagination to figure the survival of Zaeed's injury here.

Pretty much unkillable, I especially like his answer to the question on how he could kill so many.
