The number one thing I miss from Baldur's Gate (Well, all infinity engine games really) is spell duels. You know, when fighting a single enemy mage was a really tense fight, throwing up defensive spells and buff, casting spells to strip the enemy mages protections, dispelling negative status effects thrown at you. Constant evaluation of the situation requiring you to change tactics to meet new challenges. Trying to plan for everything that could be thrown at you.

Not in one other game have I found amazing spell duels like in the BG and IWD series'.

Give me my spell duels back.

Ah screw it, I'm off to write an RPG, be back in 10 years...

Indeed. The only games that retain a sense of spell dueling are typically MMOs or multiplayer games of all things. I believe "Guild Wars" has interruption and debuff mechanics with mesmers that follow the spirit of spell dueling if not exactly mirror how BG2 handled it.

I was not as impressed with IWD in this regard. Mages in that game had the odious forced casting mechanic. There were also very few dispels and debuffs to play around with. It felt closer to a traditional RPG mage duel where the goal is usually overwhelming an enemy caster with sheer force.

BG2 was unique for its sheer number of defenses, counters, and items to bring to a spell duel. As well the variety of effects and combinations thereof were spectacular. Most games lack the spell variety of BG2 even when removing redundant effects from consideration.

I agree wholeheartedly. It's interesting that you pont this out today, when coincidentally, the last Harry Potter movie is being released.

Good old Baldur's Gate spell battles are very Harry Potteresque, I think. They also remind me of the arcane battles of the Deryni in the Katherine Kurtz Deryni novel series, if anyone here has ever read those.

The magic system in this game comes the closest of any to giving the player the feeling of what it would be like to be in a real battle of witches and wizards. Spell and counterspell, anticipate your opponent's next move, or you're toast.

Icewind Dale 2 is very deficient in that regard.

Concur Tangalin.

Had a near disaster last night against 'a single enemy mage'.

No clue, where that Lightning Bolt came from. Well YEAH I do. It came from that 'single enemy mage!'

And there we were draggin' the remains of a party member out of the dungeoun.

I never know what do do. Attack all out with my tanks or lay back and spread out and wait for an opening.

One thing I tell my party is - go for the mage first. Get that SOB out of there!

I was excited the other night in a different battle with a 'single mage' to have the presence of mind to have my PC quaff a Potion of Magic Protection.
Good thing as she hit me directly with Agganazer's Scorcher and followed with a Lightning Bolt! Whew!

Keep looking for that [ /quote ], CKT. You keep carrying it down past your typed message. Type outside the bracketed commands; everything you want to say has to be past the /quote with the brackets.

I'd suggest you practice by using the edit button on your post above. See if you can repair it.

Hmm, usually I like to play mostly Evoker with enough anti-protection spells to deal, kind of feel like running an Abjurer this time...

I thought I'd pipe up to agree. I too love how every spell defense has a counterspell, and every anti-magic attack has its own counterspell, even Spellstrike. BG2 wizard duels give a taste of how these duels are supposed to be - protracted battles of cleverness and knowledge of the arcane.

BG2 is the only game to date where mages truely are fearful opponents.

In NWN, I remember meeting a Demilich. Killed him easily. How ? Smacked him hard.

That would NOT have worked in BG2 at all ...

That's partially down to the fact that games become easier and easier. Good example: Mass Effect. The first game had Biotics (=spells) that could easily decide a battle in a single move (Lift). Both you and the enemy were throwing stuff around (though the enemy not nearly with as much power or aim as you). Part 2: Lift? Seriously? When Lift can be used, the battle against that particular opponent is already over (with the exception of husks) The other offensive abilities are mostly used to work your way through the defenses of the opposition, or maintain some level of crowd control (there are 1 or 2 abilities that can incapacitate opponents while they still have their protections up). The only thing that the enemy will ever try is to reduce your health.

Yeah I still have fond memories of solo'ing BG 2 on my sorcerer. Granted I wasn't able to finish off the last fight solo but every other fight I got down. Some of the best singleplayer fights ever conceived are in that game. You really FEEL powerful as a sorcerer/wizard, but likewise, you ALSO feel intimidated by a wizard or a group of them (don't think there are any NPC sorcerers). I do remember getting the mod to allow leveling past level 18 (I think it was, before TOB came out), soloed the underdark and by level 19/20 or so I was in the Drow city. MY GOD was that an awesome feeling, abidalzims horrid wilting, fast spell casts, time stop. I guess in the end it was a bit overpowered with time stop at least :P.
