Miranda is tops, followed by Garrus with overload. I usually pair one of them with Kasumi, who basically cheats, and curbstomp battle ensues.

Tali and Legion's drones are really handy too if you manually control where they deploy them. And Mordin with the max fire ability is pretty crazy too.

I find that the sentinel squadmates are always the most useful.  In ME1, Kaidan was my go-to guy.  He was my tech guy, my first aid guy, and had some biotics for tough scrapes.  In ME2, I very rarely leave Miranda behind.  Her passive squad benefits + Warp + Overload = Miri never staying on the Normandy.

ME1: Liara for sure. Unless you're an adept, or a Vanguard who specced singularity, she brings extremely useful talents to any combat.

ME2: Miranda is the most versatile, because she can be taken to any combat and not look out of place. She's not necessarily the best option in every combat, most other characters have certain encounters where their abilities just aren't useful at all, which can't be said about Miranda.

ME1—Liara and Kaidan, hands down. Enemies barely even get to participate.
ME2—Miranda, Samara, Mordin and Thane. Jacob is also surprisingly useful. Characters with tech-only powers are much more situational, but in those situations they do well.

It depends on what your fighting. Miranda and Thane are useful against the majority of enemies, but when your against Geth/Mechs then Tali is most useful, followed closely by Legion. In ME1 I found Tali to be the most useful simply because she was effective against the Geth, and they were found almost everywhere.

I'm mostly playing as an infiltrator - so I often pick Jacob and Grunt - pretty good Tanks, who are useful even on insanity ->heavy damage on short range(shotguns)
->Grunt just overruns certain enemy types, very useful against Husks
->The inferno ammo makes most enemies unable to act and leave their cover when catching on fire

Basically, they are irreplaceable for me on critical situations like the ones on Horizon, the giant dead Reaper ship or the Collector ship

Liara is the most useful ME2 squadmate. She's temporary, though, which is a bummer.

.Garrus' sniping and Armor piercing ammo is beast... but for me he just...won't...stay...in...COVER!!!

Seriously, he likes to perch himself up on top of crates to give the enemy the perfect opportunity to kill him.  I should have the option to strap him into bright neon pink armor since he insists on standing out so blatantly anyways.

I find Thane to be very useful, then maybe Tali or Miranda.

I think Tali's drone is the most misunderstood power in the whole game. I usually play as soldier and that drone always gives me time to do some real damage to tough enemies. When you use the drone, enemy always get distracted.

If you're going to use a drone you might as well use Legion.  He has a better bonus power and actually has combat prowess.

Wrex in ME1. Tank with biotics and specialization in weapons - I thought "powers" screen kidding. It isn't. The only bad thing about him is damage to Vanguard Shepard's self-esteem.
Notable addition - high-leveled Kaidan - everyone's flying or fallen from Neural Shock or just got thier weapons overheated. Low-leveled Kaidan is totally another tune, though.

Miranda in ME2. Strips any protections, have passive boost to squad, have 31 talent points so I can use even Slam to get biotic detonation... nice.
Notable addition - Liara. Singularity to strip defences/crowd control/biotic detonation, warp for... well, warp is warp, and Stasis for not only immobilizing enemy but also damaging its protection and make fall to ground. Very nice, but only for one mission

Legion because his drone is like candy for enemies...or Miranda because she can basically take down every protection, and she gives health to the team.

But hands down Kasumi is the most fun to use :)

ME1 - Ash, she was a glorious tank.

ME2 - Miranda, her passive abilities are the best.

talis rules vs collectors.
her drone keeps the harbinger busy while i snipe the rest with my anti material rifle :D.
i wish i could bring liara and her stasis :(

Stasis doesn't work on Harbinger....have tried it a few times...:(

That sucked too.

I did have fun having Liara and one of my Sheps throw stasis on Vasir like there was no tomorrow.

Liara in ME1
Miranda/Mordin in ME2.

Miranda and Mordin together with a soldier Shep are unstoppable.  The baby Terminator reaper never stood a chance.

if it's a collector level, miranda and thane. warp is the most useful power since it takes down barriers and armor. since they both have it, you can use it to take down harbinger-possessed drones in a few seconds.

ME 1- Liara and Wrex = ultimate combo

ME 2- Miranda and Grunt. Thought Liara is still good. She had Warp And Singularity if only she had Overload back

Miranda + anyone. I usually play with Garrus since he has both Concussive Shot and another Overload. His ammo power is also incredibly good.

Each squadmate/team is strong for some situations and against certain enemies.

I guess I would say Samara/Thane & Miranda are very useful for almost any situation (versatility).
If you're not a soldier class you might consider replacing Samara/Thane with Grunt/Garrus (Grunt is very useful on collector missions and Garrus overload for mechs).

But overall I suppose the best one  is Miranda for her abilities. Combat-wise not so much. It gives you a guarantee that she will be effective.
Followed closely by Samara (Biotic abilities + AR = Biotic and Combat badassery) and Thane.

The stronger team combat wise for me would be Garrus/Thane and Grunt. Very strong team for collectors and Eclipse mercenaries.

If you're fighting mechs and blue suns mercenaries, bring in Garrus and Miranda.

If you're fighting Geth, don't choose biotic squadmates since they're not  very useful. I usually bring Garrus/Legion & Miranda/Tali for geth missions.

If you're fighting only mercenaries, you might consider bringing Jack or another biotic (like Samara with area abilities for crowd control) with someone else depending on your class and the type of mercs:

-Blue suns? Jack & Miranda (if you're soldier)/Garrus (if you're another class).

-Eclipse mercs? Jack/Samara & Thane (soldier class) /Grunt (if you're not soldier class).

-Blood pack? Miranda/Samara & Thane(soldier/vanguard class)/Grunt (other classes).

Conclusion: Every squadmate has it's pros and cons against certain types of enemies, but in terms of versability I have to say that Miranda wins since you can bring him to a mission and be almost sure that you'll find her abilities useful.

In terms of  best at combat, Grunt wins, followed by Garrus.

In terms of best biotic and good at combat, Samara wins, followed by Thane.

Best crowd control? Jack. Downside is she is very weak.

Worst squadmate? Mordin. Low health, bad weapons, only useful ability incineration, and it's very target specific (only armored targets). In high difficulty levels Mordin is useless.

Jacob is good against Blook pack and Eclipse mercs. But I found he becomes less useful in Insanity since it tends to rush to enemies (and die) to easily.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This is my opinion and my point of view.

PD: I don't have Zaeed nor Kasumi, so I can't say anything about them (second-hand copy sucks, I know).

I would if we get him earlier<_<. Usually get him close to the end and I use him a lot once he's in. Anyway I find Tali useful along with some others.
