I have a friend who has been persuaded by me to get into the DA series (though I must admit David Gaider's novels helped out a lot in this respect), but the guy doesn't want to spend a lot of money on a gaming computer (he has an old machine).

I suggested PS3, which he already has, but he read reviewies and is not sure. Dear, PS3 users, how would you comment on DA:O and DA2's quality vs PC?  Help me out here so I can present some "data" to the buddy and have him finally buy the games. Thanks!

I enjoyed DA:O on my 360 (not a ps3, but it's about the same I think?), though I was missing a "click to move" button. Still, if you play on Casual/Normal, it's not that big of a problem. It's the same game with slightly worse graphics and no overhead camera, really.

As for DA2, it's likely -better- on consoles (graphics notwithstanding) due to the control scheme (targetting is a tad awkward on PC whereas it feels very natural on consoles) and better AOE markers (camera detaches on console, doesn't on PC).

I started DAO on a PS3 and I was very happy with it. Have your friend buy the Ultimate Edition, it comes with all the DLC and you can't beat the price.

There are of course advantages of playing on a PC - but I now have both and don't have any regret of playing on the PS3 first. I just have a copy for each now :)

Depends on HOW "old" the computer is, but cards like Radeon HD5570 and HD5670 can be fitted simply to many business desktops and make them decent enough for much gaming. 5570 scores 23fps on Toms 'enthusiast' index and 37fps on 'gamers' index. 5670 scores 24.5 on enthusiast and 43 on gamers index. (those indexes are mostly compiled on 1920X1200 and 1680X1050) And these cards don't cost much more than a single game for consoles. That PC-gaming costs a $2000-$4000 "gaming-Rig" is just a silly myth.

I have only the PS3 versions, so really can't compare to PC, but I have found the games quite enjoyable on that platform. I may, at some point, buy DAO for the PC, but I expect it would be a huge difference - I can't imagine having to move around using a mouse or cursor keys instead of a stick, but I'm sure some aspects of the PS3 UI are clunkier than the PCs.

Also, you can't use mods, the console, or alter save files on PS3, and you are limited in the number of save files you can keep. Unfortunately, each add-on DLC (e.g., DAA, Leliana's Song, Witch Hunt, etc.) counts as another "character" even when you use the same Warden for them, and you are limited to 10. You are also limited to 32 save files per playthrough. I have had to delete quite a few playthroughs in order to start a new game of anything from DAO or its DLC, and it is with the PS3s file management tool, there isn't one provided with the DAO interface. DA2 does not appear to restrict the number of playthroughs I can save.

I would imagine your friend would have a lot of fun adventuring through Thedas on the PS3. I certainly have.

I played DAO in ps3
and played DA2 in xbox 360
i would suggest playing it on xbox 360 or pc because DLCs come out like 6 hours earlier for xbox and pc plus you can use mods =]

I like the game on ps3 much better. It will take you a lot longer on PC, but it does look better.

You mean DA:O or DA2?

DA:O is like a completely different game on pc compared to PS3 and takes longer. I only played the demo on pc for DA2, and it was a big shock at how different it was compared to the first on PC.

That is why I would play it on the ps3 because it plays mostly the same. If you play DA:O first on pc then play DA2 on the pc after that, I believe you will be very upset on how they changed the game. Playing it on the ps3, you will not be near as upset about the difference in it.

PC has some nicer effects (flags moving, maybe better detail, etc.) but all in all DAO on the PS3 is largely the same, as that's what I play it on.

Honestly the PS3 ver of origins looked better on PS3 than 360, but they both played the same so if you dont care about graphics, whatever system you like will be fine. I played DA2 on both PS3 and PC and I preferred PS3 over PC. I like playing my games and hitting buttons when something needs to happen. I couldnt get used to the PC's combat being on auto pilot. The PC version looked a little better, but not much from what I was able to tell. I have a new gaming PC now so it could be drastically different, but whatever. How you like playing games will determin your choice. Even when I play a PC game I use my PS3 controller unless it's stupid and doesnt support a joypad..*cough* Mass Effect 2 *cough*.

I am still persuading my bud to get a gaming PC after all because I also want him to get Star Wars: TOR, but I don't want to get off topic...just sayin'.

if on casual, PS3 is fine. the controls really get annoying when you bumped the difficulty up

I've owned and finished DA:O on all three platforms. PC being the best hands down ofcourse. Ive since sold my PS3 but DA:O for PS3 is the worst in my opinion due to the absolutely TERRIBLE stuttering through out the entire game in combat. Sure the textures are a bit sharper than the 360 version of the game, but hands down I find the 360 a better version for the smooth gameplay alone. I Dont much play the my 360 at all these days, so I'm not biased towards it, I'm more of a PC guy. Anyhoo, my two cents.

Controls were fine for me, even on Nightmare.

I loved the controller vs the mouse and keyboard personally. PS3 doesnt have any avatars though..(hint hint) the quality wasn't that much different than on my PC. PC offers mods and what not though , i could use head phones and the portrait  maker for origins had the facial expression. But overall I prefer to play on my PS3 because i love the controller.

This is a silly restriction, I agree, though it was never a biggie to me. When you import into the next part of the story you can simply delete your old one. Though this also means you can't go above 9 characters, cause the 10th character could never import into anything.

And honestly, 9 characters max isn't a restriction even most of us hardcore nuts on here would feel restricted about ;)

I have played both DA:O and DA2 on the PS3 and love them both. There is rarely any glitches or hang-ups on the PS3...that I've found anyway, and overall I will probably buy DA3 on the PS3 as well....Because I've only played on the PS3 I don't know what "mods" are...can anyone explain?

Mods are made by the general public and can include new items, weapons, characters, enemies, models, textures, levels, story lines, music, and game modes.

And mods are only for the PC/Mac version. (Not authorized/illegal under the respective game console's EULA.)
