how small of a group can you finish with the smallest i got was 5. is there away to lose merrill without bethany being a warden and killing anders.

I've heard that the game will prevent you from having 0 mages at the end, so as I understand it, this is impossible. If you don't do her quests and side with the Templars, Merrill still won't leave. Not sure what the exact number is for smallest possible group though...

that would make since. my only playthru i did lose her bethany was a warden.

Merrill, Bethany died in the deep roads, I failed to recruit Fenris, the Qunari got Isabella, and I killed anders

basically it's as they state. The lowest you can have is 1 of each class. So for example look at the siblings. 1 warrior and 1 mage. The the only class that to have more than 2 for a good deal of the game (Not including hawke) is Rogues and that is only because Sebastian is a DLC. Otherwise it's 2 rogues, 2 Mages, 2 warriors. The sibling deaths are more a control of just one key factor. Giving you a healer option before Anders is recruited. Both siblings can be gone by the end of Act 1 since you already have a minimum of 1 Warrior with Aveline 2 mages is defaulted anyway with Anders & Merrill. The minimum 1 rogue is filled with Varric as it is. Group class design pretty much written into plot points.

Bethany can be your only mage left as they stated. But requires her to be a warden and basically for you do be siding with the templars while Merrill is not loyal with you. The game wants a minimum 1 mage to be with you. Merrill will support defending the mages but not the Templars. The Templar support requires a loyalty check to get her to go along with it.
