I roleplay my Shepard. Of course there are some of my morals in him. Pure Paragon in ME1 and a mix in ME2 (insulting Miranda, Jacob and every other Cerberus operative chance I got).
Just because he and Ashley had a falling out on Horizon doesn't mean it's over. After the mission you could talk to Kelly Chambers and Joker about meeting Ashley again. You could then either decide to drop the relationship or to reaffirm your view that it was just a very bad fight with her. Granted Horizon was very badly written to begin with. The worst scene ever in history.
He still cares about Ashley and wants the option to take the next step in their relationship.

I wish I remembered where that exact podcast came from.
Personally, I'd like the option to propose to my love-interest, because after everything Shepard has been through, Shepard deserves a little peace and happiness. Not everyone feels that way, I know, but I think that if a proposal was optional, a lot of people would enjoy it.
