Mass Effect 2 made me feel extremely depressed

I usually feel a slight withdraw after finishing a good rpg, but ME2 hit me hard. I played ME and ME2 in a row, the sense of higher purpose kept me going. It wasn't really the idealized version of the future, but the role I was playing in it.

The visuals helped a lot, of course, I miss the shiny clean feel of the Citadel and the interior of Normandy, or those blueish perky asari boobs. Anything beats the ugly, broken concrete of a south-American metropolis. Still, traveling across the galaxy to save life in the universe? What kind of job in the real world could give you a better drive in life?

And Tali. Quarian badass, engineer extraordinaire, more comfortable in the engine room than anywhere else in the ship. I bet she even wears glasses under the helmet. She's the kind of girl I'd fall for irl. Having a character like that makes the whole game more intimate.

Well done, Bioware. Mass Effect was the best escapism I had in years. Robbo, pal, I completely relate to the way you feel, like the fellas here. Now let's move on with life, until the release of ME3.

But I do agree ME's world/galaxy is a much better version than our own. After all it is a very much idealized vision of the future. But I think we could get there some day.

I diagree.  In ME the whole galaxy is under threat.  As far as we know, the only imminent dangers are right here on Earth.  Mostly from each other.  It is more exciting maybe, but 'better'?  Not sure about that!

its totally better. theres FTL travel and tons of aliens and biotics. its comparably better, except for the whole reaper thing. whats better, bangin more white girls, or bangin hot busty blue aliens with tentacle hair? see, the MEuniverse is better.

Constant war, threat of losing your life no matter what job you have, special agents shooting people in the wrong place at the wrong time, rogue AI taking over colonies, extreme poverty, military is the only way to get forward in society.... I'd say that's pretty crappy. Sure, life's good if you're some sort of superlord, spectre or otherwise exceptionally awesome but I put my money on that you nor I would be that.
It's always nice to fancy a setting, ranging from this Mass Effect universe to, say, Roman Empire if you imagine yourself to be among the top dogs. But I'd say that 95% of people are those faceless critters who live to die as collateral damage, stuck with the same bad job for the rest of their short life. I'd imagine that a trip to Citadel would cost a year's pay for your average Earthborn.

Of course depends on where you live, but at least as a citizen of the EU I am very content with my current life and ME universe will never top that.

Nicely said.

Which is what makes playing as your own version of Shepard a blessing =) I'm getting ready to enter the ME universe that I was trapped in only a couple of months ago, once again.

Almost done reading Revelation. For the first time I want to do the books/comics/games in chronological order. (Also because this is my final run before ME3) I'll be taking it very slowly to keep myself trapped.

Edit: Quote fail :(

Apart from the rogue AI stuff, everything you just described happens right here on Earth right now.

A trip to the Capital of a 1st world country would cost a great deal more than the year's salary for the average person. The majority of people are stuck in the same job for their entire lives because it's either that or starve.

Of course it depends on where you live. I'd say the ME universe was no more or less dangerous to live in had it not been for the Reapers.

I agree with the majority of the posts. Im nearly finished ME2 straight after playing ME1 and its taken over my life. I imagine it will leave quite a void when im finished, but that is the hallmark of a good game/script.
Also, when you're 17, just about everything seems a bigger deal: the good and the bad and it just takes time for things to sink in (at least thats how I rmember it - was a looong time ago)

ps. I cant believe ive left it so late though, i got the ME2 for my birthday nearly a year ago!
