There's a difference between basic and broad concepts being done before that only effect the game from a narrative perspective, and an element with has been done to death in games and also directly impacts the gameplay and results in unimaginative bossfights and an attempt to be big an epic with then despite bringing absolutely nothing new to the table. The two bossfights in LotSB already by comparison seem more original and epic because they were fresh and different.

That thing just looks like something I've faced too many times in too many other games before without bringing anything new to the table. And BioWare were all, "Yeah! Look how big and badass and epic and badass this thing is! Look at the sense of awesome scale it projects!" And all I can do it watch it and think "fail!" at what they were apparently attempting. I enjoyed the other two demos quite a lot from E3, but the Spider Crab one was just lame.

Isn't it a little soon to call it a boss fight? From what I saw there was no weak spots and everything seems to point at this being a simple narrative piece as you try to escape. An orbital strike couldn"t take it down so why would Shepard's feeble guns stop it?

I seriously doubt the Reaper would suddenly have weak spots as it resumes its chase.

The only issue I had with that demo is that we weren't controlling the vehicle. It would have been prettty fun outrunning that thing. :wizard:

You could, but that'd be silly because Terminator came out in 1984 and Robocop came out in 1987.

Wow. I'm ashamed. You beated me. Silly and pointless argument.
I never remember seeing Terminator before Robocop though, but still...doesn't change the facts.

The fact that Terminator predated Robocop aside, they're completely different. Terminators are cybernetic organisms with processors for brains and metal endoskeletons covered in flesh to disguise themselves. They were never, ever human and share nothing with us.

Robocop, on the other hand, was a human police officer named Murphy who was turned into a cyborg after his untimely (and grotesque) death. He experiences flashes of memory from his old life despite OCP's directives and their control over him. He also, to an extent, ends up remembering who he was (at the end of the movie, he refers to himeslf as Murphy). In no way does Robocop even remotely look like a Terminator either (not a "naked" T-800 with a metal endoskeleton at any rate).

If you asked someone who'd never seen any sci-fi but had knowledge of mechanics/balance/military stuff/human fears/etc to design a "large scary mechanical walker" then they'd probably come up with very similar stuff.

If you were giving it legs.........you'd give it 4 legs. It's not copying anything necessarily, it's just common bloody sense. One for each corner, symmetrical, stable, able to navigate different terrain, can't be felled easily. If you wanted to be anal about it you could go for 6 or even 8, but I think most would go with 4.

If you were giving it one main weapon, you'd probably make it central and raised up. Again it's not copying anything, it just makes sense.

If you also wanted to make it commonly 'scary' then you'd probably make it vaguely bug-like being that a lot of humans have fears/phobias about bugs, especially giant ones!

"A Trip to the Moon", 1902, first science fiction film to grace the silver screen and one of the first to ever tell an actual story. And a film that Thomas Edison tried to steal and call his own, fortunately he didn't succeed. Image IPB

As to the actual topic at hand I see the similarities. Color, four legs, but nothing to roll out a lawsuit for.

I'm sorry, but leave that sleeper agent crap in BSG were it belongs. If they did that with ME3 it would just be /facepalm abundant.

Vigil talks about indoctirnated protheans being used as sleeper agents, so it's already in the game

Does that mean we'll have to sit trough more of Megan Fox' acting? I mean don't get me wrong, it's very nice acting, especially when it's bouncing up and down and jiggling in slow motion and all that but I mean we've seen that now, it's done for, right?

The reaper on the trailer is the EXACT same... it's not a tri-pod, it's not blue, it's not shooting rockets... It is a purple four legged thing crawling through a street with a head-laser, its an imported Scarab

-Scarab is a ground tank / troop carrier.

-Scarab can't go to space.

-Scarab is not a machine-organic thinking being. It's just a vehicle.

-Last time I checked, scarabs were purple and they had only four legs. The reapers are greyish-black and have more than four legs (6 or 8, I can't remember now). Check the end of ME2 and you'lll see they have more than four legs.

I think he's talking about the one walking on the ground you see it in the demo gameplay videos. It has four legs and I haddn't made the Scarab connection until now, but it is scarb esque. Fires the lazer from it's "eye", walks like one, about as big and I could see it being a troop carrier.

As others have pointed out, it's brought up by Vigil,  but the Indoctrination Codex entry discusses that application as well.  Also, "that sleeper agent crap" has been around a lot longer than the new BSG series.

I admit, there have been one or two other movies or games set in outer space. Does that make us Un-Orignal?

If so, Georges Méliès* is welcome to send me a bitter email.

I guess you would consider these all to be orginal as well.

Sometimes I wonder. A few years ago was there some conference where all the video game developers got together and agreed they'd have regenerating health, moral choices, orange and blue, a bald white male as the hero, ect?

It's really creepy how similar all this stuff turns out.

Even Avatar had a bald space marine as the hero and orange and blue...

Who can speak of "original, un-original" this days? Somebody tell me about a topic no one has ever written/painted/made a movie/whatever you want about.

We are living in an era of recycling, any formula that works at some point is repeated over and over until someone pukes and people starts looking for something else to imitate and recycle.

"Originality" this days, doesn't resides in topics, unique concepts, designs, etc. That field has been pretty much exhausted. "Originality" (specially in games, movies and books) resides in interesting ways of storytelling, in uncommon ways to turn something usual into something fresh an interesting. Like ME is doing with all this cliches and imitations many people here keep whining about.

Thank you.

Good points, not to mention that Mass Effect as a whole is a reconstruction of the Space Opera genre. tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SpaceOpera

So yeah. Mass Effect as a whole is Troperrific.
