To the OP:
Reapers-

In the shape of a hand with forearm
Fires red laser

Scarab:

Four legged spider
Fires green laser

Nowhere even close to looking alike, especially since the reapers look like an arm. To those who don't notice, play ME1, and watch Sovereign at the end attach to the tower, it looks like a hand reaching down to grab the tower.

They changed more in ME3, but still similar looking to their ME1 counterpart.

Look above you, is that Reaper black? Is it the shape of a arm? It's also not the airbourne version I am talking about, they look NOTHING alike when it that mode

Well done, fanboys.

Well, when the OP is complaining about something being ripped off from Halo 2 when the basic idea is really 113 years old, there's a lot of fun to be had in exageration and mocking. We have to get our entertainment somewhere, yknow.

except OP never said Halo was the first to do it, and you know that

*BDF mode activated*
Right... but they did mention them which then makes Chris Priestly's post all the more correct. Seriously Marsh, you gonna stick up for such a clueless brainfart as the OP? *shakes head in disbelief*

If it makes Mass Effect look bad, Marsh is automatically for it. Rule of thumb.

At least you're honest about your motivation for denying the obvious.

Give it up seriously...you just lost all credibility.....

While I wouldn't call it the greatest, you can't deny how it pretty much singlehandedly changed the course of an entire industry. Most influential, or one of the, would be more accurate.

Halo has no protagonist and no other characters but Arbie. There is nothing in it but PURE combat. That makes it an awful game in my opinion. However, the one thing that really stuck out to me is at the end of three, when Arbie is standing by John's "grave" and says "words so easy." Don't ask me why, but that is the one thing of significance that i liked about the games.

That said, I think the books are fantastic, mostly because the books are about the Halo universe, not big explosions.

But I'm way off topic.

Arby (Keith David) said "Were it so easy.", echoing upon what he said in the intro.

Also, why would you even read the book if you don't like the story in the games?

The Reaper design has been around since Eden Prime. Bringing this up now is dumb.

Because, like i said, they expand the Halo universe. Example: In all of the games, you only fight aliens. However, in the books there are three factions: USMC, Covenant, and Insurrection (I believe that's the name). And in one of them, some colonists make a deal with the Kig-yar and Sangheili to trade resources, something absolutely inconceivable to believe from merely playing the games. AND in another, several Sangheili and Kig-yar scout ships discover thousands of Forerunner artifacts...in a human system. Meaning...

I'm a sucker for the whole "ancient all-knowing race" thing. And the idea of the Forerunners is very interesting to me.

So this is about a Reaper looking like a scarab? Big whoop if you ask me. So what if it's used a few times before. I haven't played most of those other games that include big robo-scarabs, so I don't care.

If everything about Halo blows then Sci-fi must also blow which is funny because ME is a Sci-fi as well.

Exactly, some people rushes to point out the similarities between this reaper and a scarab as if it were a bad thing, completely overlooking that things like  this (and everything we can imagine) has been done over and over before.

As I said before "originality" this days doesn't resides in topics, unique concepts, designs, etc. one can't judge the value or the originality of something from that point of view today because that field has been exhausted.

It's no longer valid to judge something because of phisical similarities with a previous reference, everything always comes from something, and it's not any worst because of that.

Let me help you guys out.

The Halo Scarab looks stupid.

The ground reaper is terror incarnate and totally badass.

See? The difference was subtle, but there.

It did. Halo: Combat Evolved basically defined what a console shooter should be and how it should work. Nearly every concept it either introduced or merely 'popularized', you can still find in today's shooter. Hell, the "Halo Checklist" was pretty much the exact design document for at least half a decade's worth of first person shooters.

Halo: Combat Evolved was a serious stepping stone, certainly, but the franchise does not warrant the bloated lust of its sweaty fanboys. If hundreds of millions of people roared at the top of their lungs that the ET game for Atari was the best game in history, they'd still be wrong.

But every shooter game should be played witha mouse not with a gamepad, so there.
The only fps I consider changing the view on shooter games is Half-Life.

Argh stop comparing Halo to being the first original shooter/story whatever, its screwing with my old gaming age. Yeah you like it, its the most awesome game ever, we get it.  But in all honest it gave nothing new to the shooter universe except it being a (first?) fps on a console with rainbow colors and a standar sci-fic story about humans vs aliens.

"Only" (saying that lightly) thing Halo manage to accomplish was to get a gain a huge amount of popularity (alot of it due to their massive PR campaign, and it worked), and with it alot of goodies for any gamer to enjoy. Unfortunately it also came with "this" halo fanboyism who seem to think Halo is the father and mother of all other gaming creation. =(

/rant off got a wee bit of topic, sorry!.

If anything Halo destroyed the shooters.

"Duck behind cover, wait a few seconds, get magically healed" is a Halo syndrome everyone since then has copied.

Before that you would have to take care, not to get hit unless med-pacs where overabundant which was just as bad.

CoD1 was a great game, both SP and MP. Every sequel since has sucked because they copied Halo and pulled the "realism" out of the game, getting shot twice in the stomach? No problem, I just run around the corned and come back in full force 3 seconds later.

reminds me of how everyone complains that any game that looks western is ripping off Dragon Age or Oblivion

or that any game that uses cartoon-y fantasy elements is ripping off WoW

Every shooter besides the first Rainbow Six sucked.  I mean come on, you shouldn't even be able to get shot and then magically/instantly healed by these med-pack things.  /sarcasm

Sure I can agree with you in terms of health regen.  But as soon as you put shield into the mix you can allow for self-regeneration and still be "realistic".

Nothing is perfect. I still take a game with medics + their packs, over the "lone wolf" and "every man for himself" syndrome the regen created for MP, any day.

And if we go down that route every game sucks because it allows you to reload on death, instead death should make your computer explode in your face.
