I'm actually getting used to the guy's looks, even though we haven't seen much of him. At first, I really wanted the nose to be changed. It was just too high apart from the mouth. But now, as I look at his picture more, I like it. Yeah, he's not exactly the prettiest guy around but he's not bad looking either. And something tells me that BW will try extra hard to make him interesting personality wise, after the whole Jacob thing.

I just hope they don’t try too hard. :bandit:

Would you honestly be saying the same thing if a female character was introduced who had features that you consider unattractive?  Why can't we have equal opportunity eye candy?

The people who found the female companions in Dragon Age 2 unattractive or imperfect were very quick to be called misogynistic and nothing but hormoned up boys liking boobs and asses and conventionally pretty faces over tastefulness, style and realism.

I loathe double standards.

Personally, I don't care that much, as personality matters way more than looks to me.  But for the ladies and gentlemen who do care, why can't they ask for an attractive potential LI?  I was disgusted by all of the complaints about Isabela (and I look at James Vega in the same way at the moment, it's way too soon to moan), but I understand the sentiment.

If Bioware is going to have romanceable characters, it stands to reason that the people who choose to pursue them get equally attractive options.  Miranda, for instance, was obviously designed with attractiveness in mind.  So was Thane.  It's not a double standard to point out that most of the people saying "deal with it" regarding James Vega's looks are mostly guys who probably just want the token Human Male Party Member on the team to be their bro, but not outshine their Shepard in any way.

Both he and Jacob have an ape-like look to them. Not the bods mind, the faces.

I'll always give a new character a chance, but I get the feeling Mr. Vega's going to become the next generic human dude that everyone ignores because, seriously, who genuinely wants to bring generic human guy onto a mission when you could instead bring the many, many amazing alien teammates.

And this is just another missed opportunity for a Volus, Elcor, and Hanar team member. For shame.

Also, if he calls me "Brommander" and his personal mission involves going to Planet Jersey Shore to battle the evil Snooki alien monstrosities, he's going out the airlock. Just saying.

Honestly.

The amount of idiots in this forum lol.

We know NOTHING about this guy except for this pic here; and I think he looks nice. Exactly how a grunt soldier ought to look (which is what he is a solider in the Alliance Military); I always found it odd that we DIDNT have a giant built like the side of a house soldier on the Normandy prior to this.

As long as they dont go down the route of The Priiiizze with him I will be happy.

As I've said - if you are having a strong first impression reaction to him then I'm willing to bet you will like his character. It's like at first you are all "oh what a sterotype! So typical..." then you play the game and then you say "Oh wow. You are like an actual person with feelings and thoughts...and wow. Can I touch you?"

I really don't understand how people can hate him just because he looks different than what we've seen before. (In a mass effect game, party-member wise.) I don't think he looks much like a GoW guy, though I've only played that game a couple times, they seem a bit meatier in that game and Vega seems a bit more realistic since I see him as a marine.

And who knows, maybe he's going to have an awesome personality, which I'm really hoping for. I don't want another team member that I'm just going to let rot on the ship while I take the same two teammates out time and time again.

Just my 2 cents~

I think the problem so far is that we only have looks to go on. I think an attempt was made to make him look unique, and it put him slightly into the uncanny valley. Que sera.

Now, if in the game he's the FNG whose character arc has to do with him getting used to all the crazy stuff Shepard and company get into on a regular basis, i'm cool with that. Right now, though, with nothing else to go on, he looks like the tank whose input on story decisions will be "Shoot them all and let God sort them out."

People with faux hawks and muscles are not some unfortunate group of people who are unfairly mistreated. They don't need to be defended. I don't treat them any differently than I do with other people, I just look at them and think "well that's a terrible haircut, are people still doing that?" and move on. Unlike skin color or homosexuality, looking like a dingus is something you can, and should change. I'm not going to go into the game and be blown away that James Vega is just like a real person despite how much his look wants me to hate him. It's just a bad design choice, that's all.

I'm a female. I'm fine with Vega not being attractive/super model attractive. Unless you know for a fact that most of the people who are saying 'deal with it' are, in fact, people who don't want their bro-sheps to be outshined, careful with the broad strokes you're painting.

Honestly, I highly doubt the mentality is, "Dude, bro, I don't want him out-shining my Shepard, man, which would obviously be the outcome if he became pretty like every other character in the game!"

Which brings another thing to mind; unique is far more important than attractive. In a Bioware game, average to unatractive characters are unique.

I used "most", "mostly" and "probably" in the bolded portion for a reason.  I understand that not everyone conforms to preconceived notions.  My original post was responding to someone chastising those who want a more attractive squadmate.  My point was basically saying that it's not a terrible thing for people to have opinions on his looks.

Personally, based on my own dating history and the crushes I've had, it would be pretty silly of me to be an "internet female" and nitpick this video game character's appearance.  BUT, I don't fault those who are doing so.  It's a game, and a character, not a real person whose self esteem is going to be deflated by criticism.

Depends on whether people are being prejudiced against them. Saying that
"it can be changed" is kind of a nonissue since it doesn't actually
give somebody a right to be prejudiced based on how someone dresses or
their own personal sense of style. It's still unfair. Let's pretend for a second, hypothetically, that you COULD change your skin color and sexual orientation at will: would your opinion change about how you treat people on something that really does no harm to you? I'm gonna' go out ond a limb and say you wouldn't...

And not everyone thinks he looks like a dingus or that "it's a bad design choice." That's purely opinion, not fact. From what I can see, the forum is pretty evenly split between people who like the way he looks and people who don't.

This is why I love being part of Bioware's fan base. We're such a vocal group and usually about the smallest things. It's just a photo, hahaha. I'll judge him when the game comes out and till then, I'll be open minded because we truly know nothing about him.

I hope he's voiced by Nancy Cartwright.

HA HA!

(Joking aside, I see no reason to change his appearance. So he's not particularly attractive... so what?)

He looks like a real person there, unlike the first image of him where he seemed have stepped out of Gears of War.

That is a huge improvement, IMO.

He doesn't
necessarily have to be on steroids. I've worked as a personal trainer
and his body is perfectly achievable without steroid use, so long as
your genetics are good and you train/eat properly. He's not that exaggerated in the pic, to be
honest. Even then, you have to remember that this is the future and that
humans go through constant genetic modification to better themselves.
Ashley received genetic modifications to her eyesight before birth and
Miranda is one big genetic project. It stands to figure that it's not at
all implausible that Vega is more muscular because he's been
genetically altered to be stronger than the average human male to make him better on the battlefield.

...God, I feel like I'm five posts into this forum and I'm already the voice of dissent...

I don't know why people is complaining about the image shown so far. My first impression was: finally, someone (other than Shepard) which looks like a real soldier. I never liked light armors in this game, they look, so, skinny... (and I'm a Kaidan and adept lover). I don't mean they should be a big tank of muscles, but still they are soldiers and are suppose to be the best of the best, so I approve of his body shape. Also, I think this could be the first person I will call a brother of arms for my male shep. Nor Kaidan, nor Jacob completely fulfilled that role. Still I need to meet him, but from his facial expression on the picture and the little background we know I think I might be right.
Finally I must say I like the idea of the tattoo, it doesn't look gay, as I read somewhere... It actually surprises me this is the first human tattoo we'll be seeing on the entire trilogy. Thumbs up for realism to Bioware!

Also, I haven't seen anyone talking about the dog-tags. I really like this small detail. I always wanted my Shep to have them while on the Normandy.

Lol Yeah, because when the **** goes down--I totally want an Elcor or a volus at my back.

I can’t believe people. Honestly. To look at one image of someone and totally know their personality, creed and IQ is astonishing. To think because he is muscular that he must not have any brain power! Because he has a faux hawk, he must be a brody! He is generic because he looks like a stereotypical jarhead!

I want a 105lb female marine that can punch krogan and resort to fisticuffs with aliens five times their size! I mean, who wants a marine on their side who works out! Who works hard strengthening his body to gain optimal performance! Everyone should look like they stay online day in and day out punching numbers on a keyboard instead of kicking ass. Amirite?
