All the reviews I've heard from people who played the demo at QuakeCon have been glowing about the gameplay and world immersion.

I have a question for those who know the studio and more on the game. For me, story is the most important thing in most game and lately I've been having very little patience playing games with no or idiotic stories.
So far I find the setting very intriguing and I am glad the devs decided to create their own world. It looks great and interesting. But what's the studio's record in terms of the narrative and story in the game? I see that Dishonored is the unofficial "successor" to thief. How was the story there?
Can I expect a great story that is complex, mature, emotionally engaging and intellectually stimulating? Or should I just expect something serviceable and not idiotic as to ruin my experience?

Yea I am skeptical about the "all-star" cast. One or two would be cool but more than that sounds excessive to me but we'll see.

It's an action game so I've lowered my expectation to an extent. It looks more original in story and setting than gameplay. Don't expect CDPR's level of writing though.

I think this could be the game that makes me change my mind about what story in video games is- along with Bioshock, which I couldn't finish due to migraines but badly wanted to. They are talking about story as world immersion and player freedom. You can see some of Corvo's story in the debut trailer and this latest one- he was the empress' bodyguard and likely also her lover, possibly the father of the little girl we see in the trailers. To me it makes for a pretty compelling dramatic setup.

I saw the debut trailer (which is cool), but what latest trailer (other than gameplay)?

Is there any story that doesn't have a premise that's been used before? It's always in the execution.KnightofPhoenix wrote...
Yea I read it, but it's hard to take that seriously when the basic premise of the game is unoriginal (which I don't mind). But hopefully the actual execution will be both original and nuanced.

I meant the voice acting video.

Recently bought the Thief collection on Steam, and heard a lot of great things about it but haven't had a chance to play yet.
The devs also worked on the first two Deus Ex games, Half Life 2, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, The Crossing, Arx Fatalis, LMNO and I think they did some of the environments for Bioshock 2.

It's a bit rambly and didn't hear much new, but gives some insight into their design philosophy. One thing I liked that he said is that they consider their approach a pull-based narrative, where they let the player decide how deeply they go into the story based on how much exploration and observation you do. You can bull through on the basics or pick up a lot of nuance. Also like that they describe it as a "moving painting," I think the care they took with the art assets really shows.

All of the reports I've seen of people who played the demo at QuakeCon have been glowing. I didn't even see a "meh" reaction from anyone.
This month's Game Informer has a preview, we should be getting ours today or tomorrow.

That author talks as though those were glitches though and that such things can't be done in other games. I hate it when people over-hype games.

Though the responses from people playing the demo have all been positive to glowing. I haven't seen a single one say they were disappointed, and seen a few that said they were "meh" until they played it. I consider these good signs.

It's also just really great from a general game design standpoint, they're talking about how games can be literary without binding the player. Awesome stuff.

Its like Half Life 2 meets BioShock...which I guess sort of makes sense since I think Half Life 2's art director is working on Dishonored.

Everything they say about the gameplay impresses me. I'm not usually a gameplay wonk, but when they explain it as using gameplay as emergent storytelling, it makes sense to me and is more exciting than just kill X mooks or big boss to advance.
BTW I'm playing the Thief series now. Definitely see the inspiration.

My gripes?
-No option to put the sword away (or is there?)
-Conzo is a strange guy. Who the Hell holds their left hand up to their head when holding a sword?
-If I want a gun in my right hand I can't have that.
-I don't think the player can see Conzo's legs if they look down which is a departure from all of Arkane's previous games.
-Lack of swords by the looks of it. I want a longsword.
-Bethesda is publishing which means I see their logo everytime I put the game on.
Other than those minor gripes I have no problems. It's Arkane after all so there's going to be some sweet stuff and who knows, maybe we'll get Arx Fatalis 2 after this (or some other RPG). So long as Bethesda never gets involved in any of their development I'm good with Arkane but Dark Messiah (360 version) and now this game seems to be suggesting we'll never see another game from them like Arx Fatalis and if we do, it would probably be dumbed down.
Oh and supposedly we do get to choose some dialogue for Conzo (or whatever the Hell his name is) in this game but such occasions are rare and only when it's appropriate. It makes me think, in that mission where you can seduce a woman (who is also an assassination target) can you actually go all the way with her and then kill her afterwards or better yet, during?
Hmm, we'll see. The multiple outcomes to missions and the game's endings itself is what makes me interested about this game. Each Conzo can never learn every skill so each Conzo will be different in terms of upgrades and choices made and the city will turn out different each time (either becoming safer or chaotic with citizens rioting).
Edit:
Yep, there are dialogue choices.

Arkane has been a wholly owned subsidiary since 2010; get used to seeing that logo on all their projects.
Unlike other large publishers, however, they do seem to encourage their dev studios to retain their own creative vision.

You don't see the legs, that's been confirmed.
I don't know what you're talking about with holding his hand up, so can't comment.
He's an assassin, not a warrior. A longsword would be kind of odd for someone who has to move quickly and quietly through small spaces. His knife is actually a flip knife, it closes, so it's more compact than even a dagger. I assume there's a wield/ unwield mechanic for any weapon. Not sure if you can wield in either hand.

Seriously I just want to bite his left hand off and eat it. It's so annoying.
Oh and f**k yeah! A mental asylum!
Glad to see the game has a creepy level.
