Aside from the fact that Arkane Studios is mostly working on the game and Bathesda is just producing.... Really?
Worst studio ever?
Worse than Atlas?
Worse than Titus?
EA?
Capcom's latest Resident Evil?
Seriously we're saying the worst because???

On another note, I swear this game had an on screen quest marker in one video or doth my mind deceive me?

You can turn them on or off, as well as various HUD features.

I just thought I'd jump in this thread and join the party. I just preordered this game and I am frickin stoked! From what I've seen of the gameplay it looks like we have a lot of ways to approach combat which personalises it and gives it a lot of replay value. I don't think I'll regret living on ramen one bit.

Good call.  :D

A bit of a story spoiler but something I found cute....

In one of the trailers you see Corvo returning from his trip (looking for a cure for the plague) and Emily greets him, he picks her up and kisses her cheek and then she asks him to play hide and seek.  Apparently that is the stealth tutorial.  D'awww.

Here's hoping that the game really delivers when it comes to stealth. There's only so many times I can replay the Thief series after all, and Thief 4 isn't showing any signs of arriving anytime soon.

Now to get back to my 17th replay of Thief 2.

Possessing a rat is going to be very helpful. I'm sure there is a complex network of just basic ratholes to use. Maybe some leading exclusively to rare, hard to find whale charms. I also plan on using devouring swarm as a method of distraction during escapes, a lot...especially if I need pandemonium.

Moments like this are why I play video games. That sounds fantastic.

I'm playing Thief 2 right now as well.  :)  Currently on Life of the Party mission.

Its like Half Life 2 meets BioShock...which I guess sort of makes sense since I think Half Life 2's art director is working on Dishonored.

Is that costume at the top right an upside down baby? Dead and chained in red chains? That's MESSED up :P

Apparently there is a backstory 'chronicle' to Dishonored that was just released. It's part one...with others to be released in the coming days.

I'm sorry I can't provide a link. :(

Ah yes, Life of the Party... *points to video linked in his sig* Good times!
Guess that might be my favourite mission of all 3 Thief games. Probably more so than Thief 3's Shalebridge Cradle, which is quite fantastic but, unlike Life of the Party, loses a fair deal of its appeal when you replay it (the haunted hotel in Bloodlines is a bit similar to me in that regard).

And I just read that "without clues, Dishonored was too difficult" article that was mentioned on the previous page, about how people playing the game didn't know what to do without some handholding.
Sheesh, what a disaster it would be having them play a Thief game. Just looking at the objectives you're given at the start won't get you anywhere if you then don't go about exploring the map thoroughly. You'd miss so much loot, all those secret passages that might get you past guards, switches to turn off those damn security systems, ....
So many hilarious guard conversations you'd miss too!

Hope Arkane will manage to channel the ghost of Looking Glass Studios.

Anyway, all should hear the word of Karras...or Kawwas rather, THE WORD OF KAWWAS!

Thief II objectives sometimes throw me off, such as when the objective changes midstream and you see the big red "FAILED" sign but it just means that Garrett learned he couldn't do what he had planned to do.  It definitely is a game without handholding.  I expect Dishonored will be easier, and some people will complain about that even though they could turn off the hints if they wanted to.  C'est la vie.

For PS3 players, Sony is offering a new day-one digital program and Dishonored is $54 with pre-order for PS3 Plus.

I'm honestly excited for this game, but I'll wait for consumer reviews which will determine if I pick it up along with Halo 4. I've been burned one too many times by bad games.

But the question is... Is the game designed around these on screen helpers ?

Take Oblivion for instance, even though you can shut it off, you need the quest marker because people don't give you enough information. No directions to anywhere, just a quest marker. The game is literally designed around the damn helpers.

My guess is no. They've said that you will get quest information from overhearing conversations and other contextual clues. I haven't played a game by Arkane, but if these guys were inspired by Thief II, you observe or you die. After all, the playtesters were baffled and they only talked about adding conversation helps, not big arrows hovering over people's heads.

One thing that could be considered hand-holding is The Heart- an object Corvo has, or gets at some point, I'm not sure- which reveals some locations of bone charms and beats faster when he's facing a quest objective.  it will also whisper people's thoughts to him.  Its use is optional and it seems there could be consequences for using it.

I'm going to go to the options screen before I start and turn that off. Don't want it or need it...but I may use the Heart. That is a genuine game mechanic detailed when the game was first announced and first detailed. Like Addai said, though, I believe there are consequences for using it or using it too much.

I wish I was gonna play this after I got my new TV. Mine now is ok but upgrading come Black Friday. Can't wait!! But alas...that'll have to be for a later playthrough.

Bottom line is, even if they truly are, once they get in those meetings with the publishers, all that sh*t goes out the friggin window.

Well, they were not only inspired by it, a number of the guys at Arkane actually worked on that game, as well as Deus Ex, Arx Fatalis, Half Life 2, Dark Messiah...

Yea, they have some ppl like Harvey Smith that have worked on some good games in the past, BUT, in this day and age, under the current publisher model, I'm gonna remain skeptical until proven otherwise.

That's fair.  We've all been burned by games, especially lately I guess.

Half or more of my enjoyment of a game is in the aesthetic and a world suffused by story, so not only do I not expect to be disappointed, I've already gotten a lot of payoff just in the art and videos released so far.  But for gameplay wonks and for the sake of sales, I do hope the gameplay proves to be as versatile and fun as the playtesters say it is.

Speaking of world and story, #2 of the Dunwall story videos is out.
