He says you really can avoid killing anyone.
Apparently if no one sees you, you get to hear some banter that indicates people are REALLY scared of you. Allegedly confusing you with the Outsider.

I haven't done an official 'mission' yet other then introductory mission...I don't even have my powers yet. The atmosphere is thick and genuine...amazing...and it goes great with the artstyle. The loudspeakers blare propaganda and npcs have good and plentiful banter, both informative and helpful in lore and backstory. Early on I've been reading lots of lore tidbits and looting. Enemies are hard and you're reminded early that rats will come after you, too. If you get caught guards from other rooms come charging in after being called. It's too early to give an assessment of AI...rats are attentive and guards have patterns that can be learned if studied. Lots of keys. Keyhole peaking is cool. NPC friends seem super cool, especially one sofar in particular. The controls are good, too, and peeking is very precise, although jumping out of water to land can be twitchy in my early experience. Music and menu music is good. You can pick up stuff ala Half-Life 2 style. Ammo and resources are scarce, as advertised, although it seems at least sometimes crossbow bolts can be retrieved. Traps are well contrieved. Just bought some stuff and it looks like there are solid upgrade choices.
This game is going to be so friggin good....so glad I'm only starting

I won't be able to start playing until Thursday, but can anyone attest to the quality of the story, or how choices are recognized? Or is it more just DE:HR, where the story is pretty static, regardless of the choices you make?
The story moves a bit too fast at the start.
As in, the Empress is already dead within the first five minutes, which really limits your connection to her character/death. In that sense, Half-Life 2/Bioshock are better since they give you a better opportunity to take everything in before you start killing things. But the interactions with her daughter are adorable.
On the other hand, the gameplay/setting is phenomenal, superior to Deus Ex in my opinion. I can already tell I'll be replaying this game at least a good 2-3 times. I've done about four missions and the storyline is pretty static, far as I can tell. You see your decisions reflected in other ways (character conversations, number of enemies, etc), but if you're looking for divergent storylines, as per the Witcher 2, you might be disappointed.

No! I killed one person in my first mission! Now I got to run through it from scratch (to get "Clean Hands" achievement) because I had no idea who I killed (or let die by negligance)! I managed to ghost it and only upgraded blink despite grabbing all the runes I could ... so I could still get "Shadow" and "Mostly Flesh & Steel" ...
Ah that sucks. I accidentally killed one person during that first mission but reloaded it to complete it properly.

I've managed to maintain my no kills throughout the second and third mission, but I didn't manage to remain completely undetected (possibly related to the few bodies that I didn't hide well enough). Oh and this is on very hard btw.
But yeah, they can die pretty easily when you knock them unconscious - falling into water instantly kills them and I heard that dropping them down stairs/knocking their heads against walls can also kill them. Had to reload so many saves to stop myself from accidentally killing them (or getting detected, since I don't like wasting sleep darts).
The non-lethal aspect of the game is pretty fun, especially since they also present alternatives to killing the assassination target (unlike Deux Ex:HR, with its boss fights). Blinking behind people and choking them out is pretty satisfying (especially with the arm strength bone charm), and I kinda feel like a leopard/body snatcher in the way I always blink away with their body to hide it on some high place (since they never seem to look up) haha.
My only qualm with the non-lethal approach is the lack of variety. So far, the only three non-lethal methods to get past enemies is to sneak up and choke them, shoot them with a sleep dart, or just sneak past/distract/possess them and avoid them. Meanwhile there's a plethora of inventive ways you can kill them - in terms of weapons (more variety and methods to use them - drop assassinations etc), power combos (using rats etc), and re-routing wall of lights etc.
I'm tempted to put my low chaos playthrough on hold and muck around with a really destructive high chaos style of play..

After replaying the prison escape to get the Vanished achievement on Very Hard (quite easy achievement IMO), I am beginning to consider going for "Mostly Flesh and Steel" right off the bat (might be a bit difficult to do so simultaneously with "Shadow" and "Clean Hands" on a first playthrough).
But this way I won't get to use all the nifty powers ...
Ugh....I really don't want to go for the Mostly Flesh and Steel achievement. Whats the point of having such awesome powers if you can only use Blink?

I love this game so much. But for the people that just got it I highly suggest you use your first playthrough to be action oriented. Sure the ending is darker.....but the abilities and much more enjoyable when you use them with lethal intent. Like summoning a swarm of rats. Or stopping time, possessing someone, then moving him in front of his own bullet. It's a blast. Don't get me wrong playing stealth is still fun, especially considering how many options the game gives you to avoid fighting, but I found myself ditching stealth after like the 2nd mission and I definately didn't regret it.
That would be my biggest complaint. It's certainly possible to perform a non-lethal playthrough. But there don't seem to be many powers/equipment which actively support it. No sword, no gun, and fewer powers to choose from. In that sense, Human Revolution is a bit better since there is more variety in non-lethal takedowns.

Yeah I agree Human Revolution did it far better. Freaking loved that game...

But I'm reserving judgment, like I said. The story hasn't been that engaging yet, my wife was watching me play the first twenty or so minutes and I said 'well, they are going to die, that's obviously a bad guy, you're going to be the person I have to find...' Nothing really original or surprising. Again, super early in, but I haven't been hooked yet.
