I have to say that even though I love this game....it makes me feel sorry for whales. :(

Did you see the text in the final level about the philosopher who wanted more humane treatment of whales?  At least there's some acknowledgement in the world of that.

I think I read a text(not sure if it was the final level) where a guy was criticizing another guy for suggesting that whales be treated more humanely.  Other than that it was a bit disturbing that everyone was completely apathetic towards the fact that everything in the world was being powered by dead whales.

So if I understand it correctly, Corvo, a former Lord Protector of the late Empress becomes the *new* protector of her daughter as well?

Yeah and I think it's also hinted though not outright confirmed that Corvo is in fact her father.

My theory on this is that Corvo was the emperoress's lover and they conceived a child.  However, since Corvo is not native to the land he could not officially marry the emperoress and become emperorer and perhaps his identity as the father may have even been kept a secret from the public to avoid any social stigma.

Boyle mission done. Super fun level. Went non-lethal and got a bone rune as a reward back at the Pub.

Did you know you could sign the guest book? I know I did.B)

Yeah, signed the guestbook early own. It was fun being able to walk around casually just being a part of things, casually checking out the art design and detail and listening to npcs and looting. Gathering clues. Thought it was funny that npcs would say " go ahead, take it....everyone does it...they'll never miss it" when you stole an item. Loved seeing the masks, too. Some really cool ideas and oddities. Felt cool, too, knowing what MY mask looks like, being able to show it off at a party. A couple NPC responses about my mask. Banter in this game is supurb overall.

The Outsider's characterization is getting better and better. Love how each level has a charm shrine...now when I see it I know I'm about to chat with the Outsider. I'm providing him with valuable entertainment, methinks.

Started playing this yesterday. Been pretty fun so far and it looks great in 3D Vision.

Having just come from a replay of both Thief 2 and 3 presented me with some difficulties though. Even though it's clearly stated that stealth is obstruction-based here, I still automatically kept on trying to hide in the shadows...which obviously failed dramatically, leading to some serious bloodshed.
And even though Corvo seems very capable in the bloodshed department, anytime I find myself having to fight I end up reloading, probably also courtesy of the Thief games (damnable "You're a thief, not a murderer. So don't kill anyone." objective being stuck in my head).

Remember....you are a supernatural assassin!!! :P

Heh, I've read people say that they think playing lethal/ aggressive is more fun.  Probably true and I'm going to do a playthrough like that, but story-wise I find it satisfying that Corvo is not the monster everyone says he is, and he looks out for the little people who are just cogs in the machine.  Though I don't think a completely non-lethal pt is realistic story-wise.  I can understand it as a gameplay challenge people like to impose on themselves.

Good guesses.  Daud's observations about him were really cool- that whole level was.

I never saw the "daddy" drawing in-game so definitely have to replay a low chaos game just for that!

I did.

Felt more than a bit overprotective of Emily after that, and it was all I could do not to kill just about everyone who betrayed me.

PS: Nobody locks my daughter away and leaves me for dead!

What's funny is that at the beginning one of Emily's talk lines is "Corvo, if you won't marry my mother, will you marry me?" lol I am guessing that he and Jessamine couldn't marry because he's Serkonese and that place has a bad reputation.  With Emily they probably never told her that he was her father because she would blurt it out in public.  But kids are smart and deep down Emily knows, and if he's someone she looks up to then she wants it to be true. So that makes the picture even more significant.

It also makes my high chaos playthrough less likely!

BUGGER...IT...ALL!

It seems as if Dishononed now has the dubious honour of joining the short list of games from the past 10 years that has managed to make me motion sick. Before that, in the 90s mainly, about 2/3rds of all first person perspective games managed to do this. Since then, the only games that did this that come to mind are Half-Life 2 and the Dead Space series. And now apparently Dishononed.

Blergh, I really hope it's just a one off occurence or else I'll be reduced to playing no more than half an hour a day, which is no fun at all.
And this after I had such a good time branding high overseer Campbell as a heretic. :(

I also get motion sickness and migraines from some games but not from Dishonored. I recommend lowering head bob, raising FOV and raising brightness sliders.

Anyone out there still playing, or have you all moved on to AssCreed?  :)

I'm on my 4th playthrough, attempting a Ghost + Clean Hands run.

RPG Codex has probably the best review of the game I've seen.  Apart from small things, it pretty much sums up my take on everything.

The RPG Codex review knocked the game story, but I can't disagree with what they say. The political setup is naive and the conspirator story pretty contrived. Those who like the story are, from what I can see, those who see it mostly as about Corvo and Emily, and that's what grabbed me the most from it, so I'm satisfied overall from a story standpoint.

What I liked about RPG Codex was that they acknowledged the AI is as complex and sometimes harder than the Thief series. A lot of hardcore nostalgists (but I repeat myself) whine that it's too easy. I will say, it's obvious they put in handholding in terms of quest clues, but some of that can be turned off in the blessedly customizable UI settings.

Addai, the game is not one month old and you're on your 4th playthrough? Impressive! How long is it? I'm starting my first one right now... heh

And how hard is the Very Hard diff? I'm starting in Normal though, 1st playthrough and all... also, is there a way to play it in 3rd person? First Person is not my cup-of-tea.

I'm still on my first playthrough, a little over 40 hours and currently stuck in the level that I guess is the second to the last.

I highly recommend to turn off all the markers for objectives and contextual markers. Also, recommend not to use the heart object during your first playthrough. As a result, you don't know where anything is or where you are supposed to go and you feel much more rewarded for exploring and finding stuff.

I've been playing on very hard and it's not so hard. I try to sneak around and usually get killed if I'm detected, so the stakes are high to remain undetected. I have died and reloaded lots of times, which is the sort of gameplay I enjoy most personally.

My first pt was 25 hours, second was 18 hours.  I played those on Easy and Normal respectively, not reloading for the sake of any achievements.  Play time is highly dependent on your playstyle.  If you're using stealth and exploring everywhere*, or reloading a lot in order to get Ghost or Clean Hands achievements or what have you, it will be longer.  If you're playing it as an action game and rushing through the main story line (not recommended), it will be much shorter.

* Note that exploring everywhere is not easy to do.  I'm still finding hidden areas.

I have been on the fence about getting this game since it came out.

A lot of people are saying it's great, and a lot of people are saying it's disappointing. But the review posted above on RPG Codex seemed a bit less black and white.

I personally love it. It's a beautiful game with open areas, lots of nooks and crannies to explore. My only complaints are it could use more depth in the talent tree and loot could be more interesting. I think it has some of the best controls and movement of any FP game I've played. Getting around is a breeze.

I can tell you this much, the intro doesn't do the game justice. If I'd gone with my initial impressions, I probably wouldn't have played the game, but I persevered and it paid off. There's a sense of power that comes from being able to tackle missions pretty much any way you see fit, and even if you choose stealth-mode or butcher-mode you can still accomplish both any number of ways. I played the stealth route and I relished being able to teleport from place to place or halt time for a few seconds.

Having said that, I agree with RPG Codex about how enemies only seem to detect you on a horizontal plane and I too thought shadows would grant me cover and found out otherwise the hard way. The hiding mechanic is somewhat, if not entirely, disappointing but hopefully they'll improve on it for a future game. There were also numerous instances in the game where I wanted to talk to people, or protest my innocence. A "Dishonored 2" should feature more dialogue.

I didn't miss long dialogues at all, because the design philosophy is contextual and visual storytelling and that works for me. Long dialogues are confining, they require the developer to either write out a lot of text which might not fit how you see Corvo responding, or even worse imposing a voice on him and showing him in 3D.

Also the "no detection vertical" is one thing I didn't agree with from the RPG Codex review. I have definitely been detected when above guards. Sometimes from very far away. I recall once that I was happily blinking up a series of chains and balconies when I heard a "detected" warning- two guards on a platform far away and beneath me had seen me before I even realized they were there. I've also been detected on ledges and balconies. Just like on the horizontal, distance and shadow play a role, so does movement or noise. I myself find the stealth mechanics challenging and fun. No issues there.

Did I say long dialogues? Not at all, I'd been satisfied with Corvo uttering two or three lines from time to time.

Unlucky you, I haven't.:D

I think his presence is lacking as well. I want to know more about this guy, but so far, zilch.
